What Makes The Death of Socrates a Great Work of Art?: A Thought-Provoking Reading of David’s Philosophical & Political Painting | Aladin-Fazel | Scoop.it

When we think of political propaganda, we do not typically think of French Neoclassical painter Jacques-Louis David. There’s something debased about the term—it stinks of insincerity, staginess, emotional manipulation, qualities that cannot possibly belong to great art.

Mercy and Mischief: Annabella, Lady Lamington and Frederica, Countess of Scarborough, by Francis Grant, 19th century. © Bridgeman Images.Over the summer, I read an 1844 novel called Abbeychurch by the prolific Victorian writer Charlotte Yonge. She was a very popular author in her day and, though little read now, she is a fascinating guide to the tastes and interests of a certain class of bright, intellectually engaged young women of the 19th century. One of those tastes is a fervent passion for history and in Abbeychurch two characters – clever, well-read girls of 16 or so – have a conversation of just the kind to catch a historian’s attention.

Daniel Vargas's curator insight, November 8, 9:03 PM
Unfortunately, online teaching practices are becoming mainstream due to the fact that institutions do not consider it as an important way of teaching or, at least, that is what they show when designing their curriculum without taking this into account; also, teachers have no expertise on the use of these kinds of tools when it comes to innovation in class. I think that this is why courses as CALL in our University program are important for us as teachers to engage students into more autonomous learning techniques.

A lighthearted Ancient Greek myth explains why humans are doomed to yearn for partners | Aeon Videos | Aladin-Fazel | Scoop.it
Emotional vulnerability and the risk of heartbreak aren’t enough to deter most people from seeking out companions. Indeed, romantic yearning is considered a central part of the human experience. So why were so many of us created to feel unfulfilled without ‘another half’? According to a myth by the comic playwright Aristophanes, recounted in Plato’s Symposium, humans were once two-bodied creatures until they challenged the gods. Zeus, angered by humans overstepping their bounds, sliced them all in two, leaving us destined to yearn for partnership.
