luiy's curator insight, April 5, 2013 12:50 PM
o here’s my five reasons why I play World of Warcraft. Reason #1: The story and lore is amazing. WoW has a gigantic universe. It started with Warcraft I-III, a real-time strategy game, and the massive multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft came from the same universe and storyline. There is a main storyline, but then each race has its own storylines, some classes have their own storylines, each faction and group of people has its own storyline to delve into, and it’s just mind-blowing, and incredibly extensive. I’ve made an effort to read as much of the lore and storyline as I possibly can, and I still haven’t even scratched the surface. I’ve read a few of the books, and the writers that write the WoW books tend to be decent writers and do justice to the storylines. Even if you never wanted to play the game, the books are good for anyone who enjoys reading the fantasy genre. Reason #2: The music appeals to my music-nerd side. I played in concert band/wind ensemble from 5th grade all the way until my senior year of college. If I had more time, I probably still would play in the community band in my town. The music in WoW…I would have LOVED to play it in wind ensemble or concert band at any point in my life. Most of it doesn’t have any words, which makes it excellent to just listen to if I need to focus, or even just to fall asleep to at night. I’ve also snagged the Diablo III soundtrack (also from Blizzard Entertainment) and I actually have a Blizzard Entertainment playlist on my iPhone. It comes in handy. I tend to keep the music turned up above everything else when I’m playing. Most recently, the newest raid that came out has amazing music. I don’t mind wiping ten times in one night if I can keep listening to the music in the raid. Reason #3: It’s a social game, you can meet people from all over. I also happen to have the best guild of all time. It took about six months before we landed in the right guild. The original guild I joined when I started playing had some issues with the guild leader, and everyone quit playing except for Josh and I. We decided to roll on a role-playing server (Wyrmrest Accord) on a whim with our friend Ryan, creating three gnomes named Stabbystabz (a gnome subtlety rogue), Minnieheals (gnome discipline priest) and Tinyjewels (gnome frost mage).

All teachers who use an iPad should read this.
Andreas Kuswara's curator insight, April 17, 2013 9:28 PM
Many misunderstood iPad, not knowing what affordances it offers, and how to match that with their pedagogies or learning activities; the author probably rather strict in explaining the list, such as Content specific apps, it can be very useful, or make that extremely useful; but that is not the only thing that iPad can do, there are many other things, yet not everything. So knowing what can and can’t be done, and how to get around shortcomings and exploit strong points are the new digital literacy that anyone, particularly teachers need to know, probably need to experience and live, soak, immerse in. how each affordance interact and how is the mechanism of perceiving the affordance itself. Teaching is never been so exciting as now; we are entering a new uncharted (or partly charted) waters.

Google+ Tips And Shortcuts: Increase Your Effectiveness [Infographic]

Google+ Tips And Shortcuts: Increase Your Effectiveness [Infographic] | Education & Numérique | Scoop.it
These tips and shortcuts will help you increase your effectiveness on Google+. There are many extra benefits for being on Google+. This article lists some.

You might be asking yourself why you need these tips and shortcuts since you don’t have time to be on Google+ in the first place. I mean, you’ve already got enough social sites to keep up with, right? If you have a website, and you are trying to increase your traffic, Google+ should not be the social site you let slide. The reason can be summed up in one word – Google – and that means search. If nothing else, that is the reason you need to be there.

Let me just give you one example of what I’m talking about. If you are on Google+, you can sign up for Google Authorship (if you haven’t already done this, I suggest you do it today, just follow that link). We just wrote about this last week in an article called Google Authorship & It’s Insane Impact On Website Traffic. Bottom line, you’ll get to have your avatar show up in the search results on Google, which will give you a huge bump in web traffic. Only 9% of tech blogs have taken advantage of Google Authorship, which leaves a huge opportunity for you if you haven’t implemented it.

Curation: The Future of News Is All About Separating Junk From Gems

Via Robin Good, Paulo Tomás Neves

Robin Good's curator insight, April 1, 2013 11:39 AM

At the start of 2012 Steve Rubel, EVP of Edelman, published a very interesting slide deck entitled "Insights on the Future of Media" - Volume 1.

In it he analized five key trends that had emerged from his numerous talks with CEOs, startup founders, technology vendors and reporters about what would be the key, most important best practices to emerge in the near future.

The first such practice analyzed in his presentation is "news curation" under the heading "Curate to Dominate.

Steve Rubel writes: "...what I discovered is that vertical curators like SBN may soon play a larger role in how we consume content than many of us may realize.

This has ramifications for both journalists and communicators.

Sports is one of the largest and oldest online interest verticals. The category is dominated by large brands - sites like ESPN.com and Yahoo Sports, which rose to prominence during the 1990s.

Suddenly, however, the edges are fraying.

First, athletes and teams are becoming their own media channels. Beyond that, new curators are moving in and disrupting the business. SBN, for example, rolls up the best independent blog voices covering individual teams into a carefully curated network.

The Bleacher Report, meanwhile, takes a more open, crowd- Jim Bansourced approach. Today its the 12th largest sports site, koff, Vox Media according to comScore.

Both SBN and Bleacher Report are demonstrating that there's a huge opportunity for new media brands to emerge that focus on separating art from junk.

This is all a result of too much content and not enough time."

And if you are asking what's the future of a curator as a paid resource or as a business per se, here is his answer:

"...what about breaking news, which is more of a commodity these days? Can a curator win in news too?

According to the 3.3 million people who follow the MSNBC- owned @breakingnews account on Twitter - the sub-140-character answer is "yes."

That's where we pick up the story. To learn more, I sought out fellow Hofstra University alum Lauren McCullough. She recently joined @breakingnews from AP as a Senior Editor.

...MSNBC has turned it into a 24/7 news operation that curates links faster than anyone else."

Find more valuable insight, names and brands already "walking the talk" on slides 4, 5 and 6 of this very interesting deck  (Insights on the Future of Media - Volume 1, January 2012).

Recommended. Insightful. Informative. 8/10

Terheck's insight:
