Lonliness -- The Hidden Health Plague

The grim effects of smoking, drinking, and poor eating are commonly cited by doctors as appalling and expensive health scourges. Yet for aging Californians, an often hidden health plague can be just as deadly: loneliness.

Melissa's Notes: One of the stereotypical images of the senior is a sad, old woman sitting alone.  Since this is seen as "normal," it may not be seen something that can and must be addressed.  However, a growing body of knowledge has found that loneliness is as important risk factor for mortality as cigarette smoking.  As this article explains, you cannot separate medical services from social.  A care plan that does not address social connections does a disservice to clients.

Depression often goes undiagnosed, but new Medicare benefit may change that | Aging Well Digest | Scoop.it
Depression often goes undiagnosed in the elderly, but new Medicare rules may change that.

Melissa's Notes:  It's about time that Medicare began compensating doctors for screening their patients for depression -- prior statistics showed that only 14% of older adults are screened for depression.  While depression is not a normal part of aging, it does complicate treatment of other illnesses and may be misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's Disease.
