Statistics - What Happens in a Job Interview - Career Geek Blog | Agile Career | Scoop.it
You can never get enough of statistics. As an engineer and careers blogger, this is one of my favourite infographics.
Marti Konstant's insight:

The moment we walk through the door, the way we look, act, and feel make a big difference in how we are perceived in an interview. Since starting new relationships and building them is an important part of any career management strategy, these first impression stats are worth revisiting along the way.

How to Reinvent Yourself After 50

How to Reinvent Yourself After 50 | Agile Career | Scoop.it
You do have time.
Marti Konstant's insight:

The sound advice for job search and job strategy work for all people who have approached the mid-career level with a great deal of experience, not just over 50. A couple favorites: 1. getting with the times to use social media in a progressive and savvy way, enabling you to be current and relevant 2. Hitting the question  of while you might want to be "underemployed" but turning your abundant experiences into a positive and being humble enough to say that you have a lot to learn from a new manager.

3 Facts Impacting Your Career and How to Manage It - Guest Post - Career Pivot

3 Facts Impacting Your Career and How to Manage It - Guest Post - Career Pivot | Agile Career | Scoop.it
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, career is defined as “course or progress through life.” Wikipedia defines it as “an individual’s journey through
Marti Konstant's insight:

Thoughtful post by Marc Miller from Career Pivot. The setup is perfect, as the definition of career is highlighted as "course of progress through life" and "an individuals journey, through learning, work, and other aspects of life." (thanks to Webster and Wikipedia).

I like this article because it demonstrates the importance that a career is a living, dynamic situation that MUST be managed. We don't just get a job, and then think that everything is fine for now.

A career is a work in progress.

The other important point in this article is the relevance of enjoying what you do. It truly is a balancing act, as sometimes our jobs are just not likeable, an we can't simple pick up and leave the job. We have commitments.

Informative article with sound bits of wisdom for employees, career managers (that's you) and small business owners.

4 secrets to standing out on LinkedIn - Ragan | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert

4 secrets to standing out on LinkedIn - Ragan | #TheMarketingAutomationAlert | Agile Career | Scoop.it

Condensed...

The LinkedIn blog recently published an article about four ways to stand out on LinkedIn. Here’s the distilled version:

1. Status updates

LinkedIn users who share content with their LinkedIn networks at least once per week are nearly 10 times more likely to be contacted by a recruiter for new opportunities. News feeds are prominently displayed on home pages due to the recent LinkedIn upgrades. Take advantage of this by sharing articles, blog posts, third-party content, newsletters, etc. Remember, quality is key. And don’t over post either.

2. Schedule, schedule, schedule

Create a schedule and stick to it. Remember, you have to repeat a new action a hundred times to create a new habit. Post updates to LinkedIn on the train to work in the morning, or when you have your morning coffee. When you do it is up to you but you need to stick with it.

3. Upgrade your profile picture

Take this a step further by making sure your picture is up-to-date and engaging. There’s almost no excuse to not have a picture. Many professionals are prominently displayed in website bios. Take this picture and add it to LinkedIn. Or invest a few dollars and have a professional picture taken. It’s worth every penny.

4. Don’t be a Debbie Downer

Keep it professional and update on LinkedIn. Jot down your top 10 dream companies on LinkedIn and follow them. Follow your own company, too. Share unique content your network will benefit from. Whatever you do, don’t be a Debbie Downer.

Marti Konstant's insight:

Careers are so similar to marketing programs. It is the packaging and positioning that determine success. Yes, it is also about quality work, yet brilliant work sometimes goes unnoticed. Personal branding is the mandate for if you want to: get noticed and get paid what you are worth.

The Pros and Cons of Job Hopping

The Pros and Cons of Job Hopping | Agile Career | Scoop.it
Here are the pros and cons of jumping from job to job in a short period of time.
Marti Konstant's insight:

This is a strong case for the Agile career. Agree that employers are smart to look at shorter "length of stay on the job" as a function of today's work environment. Career startegy is changing. It is becoming more agile.  Employers and employees benefit from shorter time on the job because employees are more optimized when they are engaged and excited about the job. Corporations that do it right make certain that a valuable employee is challenged and gets frequent (different) job opportunities throughout their time at the company.
