Afghanistan is a mixed nation, made up of many different ethnic groups. The main groups are Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras and Uzbeks. Ninety nine per cent of the population are Muslims. Muslims are divided into two major groups, Sunni and Shia, each of which follows different traditions. The majority of Muslims in Afghanistan belong to the Sunni tradition but 20% are Shia Muslims.

Until the end of 2001, most of Afghanistan including its major cities was under the control of the Taliban, lead by Mullah Mohammed Omar. The rest of the country (about 5%) was in the control of the United Front (Northern Alliance), headed by Burhanuddin Rabbani. Now the Taliban regime has collapsed and a new 'interim government', representing all groups of Afghan society, took over Afghanistan on 22 December 2001.

Afghanistan has a history that goes back 5000 years, and rich cultural traditions. It has produced beautiful buildings, decorative tiles and mosaics, skillfully woven rugs and carpets, and has a long tradition of poetry and song. Its capital Kabul (now largely in ruins) was once greatly admired for its architecture.
