Non governmental organisations (NGOs) in Afghanistan. Non governmental organisations (NGOs) have played an important humanitarian role in Afghanistan and in support of Afghan refugees since 1979. By November 2003 more than 1600 NGOs were registered with the Ministry of Planning. The ATA has defined NGOs as part of the private sector and regards them as very important for provision of emergency assistance, rehabilitation efforts and capacity building for longer term development of Afghanistan.
