Afforestation, Desertification, Desalination
Afforestation is the establishment of a forest or stand of trees in an area where there was no forest. Inthis case, the focus is on using afforestation as a means to counter desertification.

Cornelius Ruiters, deputy directorgeneral of national water resources and infrastructure, told GWI that “at the moment, less than 1% of our water comes from desalination. We need to increase that by between 7% and 10% by 2030. At the moment we are mostly dependent on surface water, and there is obviously a limit to that – we need to diversify our mix.”

PDF document on South African afforestation

An estimate that commercial afforestation uses 8% of
the country’s water supplies has been quoted so often
that it is has become a basis for discussions about
commercial forestry and water use. Although disputed by many stakeholders in the forestry industry, the figure of 8% has been bandied around, by both protagonists and antagonists of commercial afforestation so often, that like the long held belief that 8000 elephants is the optimum number for the Kruger National Park, it is in danger of entering the realm of “pseudo-fact”.

Enviro Facts - Afforestation

Afforestation is the planting of trees for commercial purposes, usually on land supporting non-forest veld types, e.g. grassland or fynbos. This differs from reafforestation which is the restocking of existing forests and woodlands which have been depleted.
Less than 0,5% of South Africa is covered by indigenous forests. Owing to their slow growth and sensitivity to logging, these forests cannot supply the majority of our country's wood requirements. Additional fast-growing trees are planted to cater for the demand for wood products. Commercial forests, or plantations, cover 1,1% of South Africa.

Turton says that he cannot see any choice but to consider desalination as a significant element of South Africa’s future national economic development strategy, as the country has reached the limit of what he calls the hydraulic mission phase of its development, which developed almost all of the country’s water resources.

He adds that the prospects for desalination in South Africa are excellent. All coastal cities have access to seawater and energy, making desalination viable – either that, or coastal regions will start to drink recycled sewage in 25 years. In Gauteng, the acid mine drainage (AMD) problem will provide a desalination solution that will be applied to the coastal areas. Turton says that, in short, the prospects are good.

Approximately, 16% of South Africa, primarily the wetter eastern parts is suited to afforestation.(16) Owing to a favourable climate, locally pines from Europe or North America can grow at two to three times the rate than in their indigenous habitat. These types of trees fare better due to not being affected by insect pests and plant diseases, which affect the indigenous vegetation.

Reverse osmosis relies on a force to push water through a membrane against the osmotic gradient. If gravity was used to provide that force, then all that would be needed would be to continually pump-away the fresh water. The diagram below illustrates.

Only by providing the good conditions for the growth of plants can a favorable ecological environment on which human beings rely for existence be created. The upside-down-T double-layer water-conserving afforestation way is developed according to the situation of the shortage of water resources, low soil fertility and vast land in the arid areas. The characteristics of the afforestation way are to change the microenvironment in the root area of the plants, provide the favorable conditions for the growth of plants, and reduce the necessary conditions for the growth of plants in large areas in the arid regions. Meanwhile, the size of its water-conserving layer can be changed according to the size of the planted trees. The different ways of the bottom water-conserving layer can be used according to the requirements. The afforestation way is suitable for planting trees on a small scale and also for afforesting on a large scale under the adverse circumstances in the arid areas, and has been effectively used in the afforestation in the hinterland of Taklamakan Desert and the southern marginal zone of Gurbantonggut Desert. The prospects of the afforestation way are broad in afforestation and desertification control in the desert regions.
