Review: Maratac Pilot Watch

Review: Maratac Pilot Watch | Affordable watches for the average guy | Scoop.it
The definitive maratac pilot review by worn&wound. We closely examine this modern cult classic.
Gordon Chin's insight:

This watch review has a slightly different take compared to the reviews of others on its site. For WornandWound, this review I would say is as good a the others, but seems to be more influenced by personal perspective. Nevertheless, this works in its favour as it addresses an issue with this watch that other reviews lack. Being sized at 46mm in diameter, it is considerably larger than most watches on the market, and despite its extraordinary quality for its price, turns buyers away due to its size. However, this review explains how it does not appear to be too large but comfortable on most wrists due to its curvature, its design and width considerations. Most people would thus be more convinced to purchase it when they were previously discouraged.

Ticino 44MM Pilot Review

Ticino 44MM Pilot Review | Affordable watches for the average guy | Scoop.it
Yesterday I received my Ticino 44MM pilot watch (Type A). I really like it! I tried Parnis (didn't work) and Sonnomarino (busy dial / chrono buttons
Gordon Chin's insight:

This review of the 44mm Ticino Pilot is short, but sweet. It gives a rather personal take on the watch which can be effective persuasively. By using aesthetic descriptions coupled with specification details and explaining how this movement would generate more winding sound that novices wouldn't expect, it appeals to the reader both centrally and peripherally. It's images are captivating as well.

Ive been looking for a cheaper 200$ish pilot and these seem to fit the bill pretty well. However, I just want to see if the deal is too good to be tru...
Gordon Chin's insight:

This reddit thread was started by a member looking into Ticino watches, which haven't many proper reviews on the Internet.

This thread contains relevant information regarding other people's opinion on the watch, which provides a variety of perspectives to read upon and decide for yourself. It also explains how this particular watch for all its quality specifications could have something wrong and that reviews have been rather spread out, but for its price point is a good deal.

A great read for someone who needs perspective on purchasing this particular brand of watches.

Review: Seiko SKX007 Diver's 200m

Review: Seiko SKX007 Diver's 200m | Affordable watches for the average guy | Scoop.it
Hello guys, here's my review on the legendary SKX007, let's start off with the specifications: Seiko SKX007 200M WR 7s26 21 Jewels automatic movement
Gordon Chin's insight:

I really like this particular review, firstly by its high quality images it provides. These images aren't just good because they capture a good perspective of the SKX007, its good because it shows of its various aspects, from its water resistance, its association as a reliable daily "beater" watch when placed near spanners, as well as its high quality lume on the dial markings.

This review also has really well condensed summaries of its various points, from its case, its bezel, its dial, its bracelet, its movement, its conclusion and in my opinion the best part of the review, the positive and negative points of the watch. Readers would be able to get a good feel as to whether this watch suits their specifications or not.

Great review.

Steinhart Ocean Vintage Military - YouTube

Full written review: http://wornandwound.com/2012/03/21/review-steinhart-ocean-vintage-military/
Gordon Chin's insight:

A great solid review once again by WornandWound, provides an in-depth narration of the Steinhart Ocean Vintage Military, or to those in the know, the Steinhart OVM.

The majority of the video depicts the watch being held by the reviewer while he narrates, and as he does he allows for ample time for viewers to observe the watch as in real life, holding it still, moving it around slightly to give more angles of the watch. When closer scrutiny is needed, he employs images in the video which shows the close-up parts of the watch like its bezel, commenting that high quality dive watches can be indicated by their bezel quality.

His explanation of the watch as a homage is impressive as he does not fail to take into consideration of novices, and hence gives a little history which explains that this watch is a homage to the Rolex Military Submariner, reference number 5517.

His video review does not leave out much to be questioned, it provides a neutral perspective of this watch while showing his favor towards it in some instance. He does not fail to be objective as he criticises the depth rating of the watch to be inaccurate to its true rating, but goes on to explain it isn't a flaw that would and should deter buyers.

For a video review, well crafted.

I am looking for a nice watch under $300 • /r/malefashionadvice

I am looking for a nice watch under $300 • /r/malefashionadvice | Affordable watches for the average guy | Scoop.it
I am not looking for any specific color, make, or model. Just a nice looking watch under $300! Any suggestions?
Gordon Chin's insight:

I am particularly impressed with this reddit thread. A user posted for advice on a nice watch under $300, but without any kind of specificity, just pure suggestions. The replies were particularly informative, as they did not give any unprofessional suggestions, but were instead filled with good sound advice; watches that were under $300 but had specifications that were well worth that price, or in some cases worth more than what it costed. A particular comment by a reddit user was extremely helpful, it stated out the different situations to wear a watch like for sports, for diving, for dressy occasions and in each, provided a watch recommendation that to most watch enthusiasts would definitely approve.

"Poor Man's" Watch Forum Top 20 Watch List

"Poor Man's" Watch Forum Top 20 Watch List | Affordable watches for the average guy | Scoop.it

Top 20 List

Gordon Chin's insight:

This is a list of the top 20 watches, the top candidates and its past candidates. I find this list to be particularly useful as it was created by submissions from forum users, and voted by them as well. This gives it credibility as these forum members are mostly veterans and hence can be used as a useful guide for watch enthusiasts.

This list is not just comprehensive, it color codes the watches according to its availability on the market, and its price range.

Battle of the Budget Pilots: Maratac 2013 vs Ticino 44mm PVD

Battle of the Budget Pilots: Maratac 2013 vs Ticino 44mm PVD | Affordable watches for the average guy | Scoop.it
I've been really wanting a Maratac for a while and had the chance to pull the trigger on the new 2013 model. The customer service was non-existent but
Gordon Chin's insight:

For those people looking for pilot watches, they would quickly realise that fliegers (as they would call it) are notoriously pricey, even for the common man. The most well-known would be from IWC which people would understand it to be in the ranks of Rolexes or Patek Philippes.

The better known brands that produce pilot watches are Stowa, Laco, Archimedes, Steinhart but even those brands, a pilot watch would cost at least $500 and above. And nobody in their right mind would pay for a Chinese made Parnis flieger, which leaves very few options; 2 in fact, which is the Maratac Pilot by CountyComm and the Ticino Pilot.

This article compares the two watches in terms of mainly its specifications, but what I feel is an important consideration which this article addressed was the feel of the watch, its construction and how it feels to wear it.

Seiko SKX007

Seiko SKX007 | Affordable watches for the average guy | Scoop.it
If you frequent worn&wound, than you know how much we appreciate a good Seiko.   We’ve reviewed the SNZH53 diver, the SNDA65 chrono and preached the gospel of the SNK series. ...Read more »
Gordon Chin's insight:

This article isn't much of a comprehensive article on the Seiko SKX007 diver watch, but it does state its opinion in the brand's reliability, going on to explain how this particular model has its own cult following, which further proves its popularity. It also does provide some information which in my opinion is sufficient if you know your stuff.

This article is unique in its way as it shows an aspect of this watch that most reviews lack, which is its versatility. This watch has become synonymous with watch modding, and is a common model which watch owners would modify, like its crystal to a sapphire crystal, its dial, hands and bezel to other kinds. It even provides the more popular modders available.

Rodina R005 Bauhaus Watch Review | Watch It All About

Rodina R005 Bauhaus Watch Review | Watch It All About | Affordable watches for the average guy | Scoop.it
The Rodina homage to the Nomos Tangente has been causing quite a stir in the affordable watch segment at the moment. There is a thread dedicated to this watch on watchuseek literally hundreds of responses long. http://forums.watchuseek.com/f71/affordable-nomos-homage-review-rodina-small-seconds-pictures-752788.html It seems to have received a positive response and quite a following to match. Why is this the case? Mainly because of the surprising spec for $120, and also the fact that this is one of the only affordable homages available with a Classic Bauhaus style. I had to get my hands on one to take a closer look… Currently, the best place to buy the Rodina is Good Stuffs (which is where I got this one from). http://www.good-stuffs.com/Classic-Rodina-automatic-wrist-watch-OEM-by-Sea-Gull-ST17_p_156.html The model doesn’t really have a name, heck, I don’t even think there are any other current Rodinas out there apart from the blue..
Gordon Chin's insight:

This watch review of the Rodina Bauhaus watch provides comprehensive information regarding its specifications, its design inspiration and background, taking into consideration of its flaws and its strengths.

Firstly, this watch site provides reviews and recommendations that are ranked in price ranges, from $1 - $100, $100-$250, so on and so forth. By doing so, it provides a cache of watches in each price range according to the reader's preference. I've selected this watch in favour of others due to its design influence by bauhaus designers, whose watches tend to range from $700 and above, as well as a watch that has a more dressier feel.

This site is impressive firstly in its arrangement of its information, which is clear and separate, categorising each part through bold headers.

Secondly, its information is considerably professional, more than enough for its typical viewer and sufficient for the more knowledgeable readers.

Lastly, it summarizes and concludes by giving his opinion of why this watch is good for its price range. A well written article that frames its content properly.
