2013 Subaru BRZ: Review

2013 Subaru BRZ: Review | Affordable High Performance Cars | Scoop.it

Along with the Tesla Model S, the Subaru BRZ is one of my favorite cars. Jalopnik does a full review on the car and give it an equivalent rating for braking compared to the $40,000 more.

The only downside is the car is a little slow from 0-60 with a time of 7 seconds but the car being a RWD 200HP car with a 2762 curb wieght makes it incredibly fun to drive.

2013 Chevrolet Camaro

2013 Chevrolet Camaro | Affordable High Performance Cars | Scoop.it

Most of us have seen the Transformers movies and the yellow Camaro, also known as Bumblebee, throughout the movie. This was one of the best advertising moves that Chevy could make as it helped launch their flagship muscle car. Although it doesn't rank as high as some of its competition for a price point aruond $25-30k it won't break the bank and has a V6 and supercharged V8 option for those looking for more speed.

The supercharged V8 will give you a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds making it very very fast. One thing to note is that blind spots are very large in this car due to the design of the rear pillars.

2012 Subaru WRX STI: The Best Sports Car for the Money? - Ignition Episode 17

On this episode of Ignition, Carlos Lago proves that Subaru has been making fun sports cars since before the BRZ. Carlos focuses on the Subaru WRX STI which has been Subaru's flagship car before the BRZ took the world by storm. It comes in with an MSRP of $32,000 making it less expensive than some of the other cars scooped, but with its all wheel drive it is still very good to drive in the winter and summer.

Calculating the cost of a motorcycle accident

Calculating the cost of a motorcycle accident | Affordable High Performance Cars | Scoop.it

So one question that I am asked a lot is that if you are buying a $60-70k car why don't you just buy a motorcycle for $10k and be able to go much faster. Well like it or not, you're thirty times more likely to die in a motorcycle accident than in an automobile crash.

According to the Government Accountability Office 82,000 riders were injured in motorcycle accidents and close to 5,000 were killed in the crashes.

I had a motorcycle for a while but the issue is not that you are a bad driver but others on the road don't see you. It's dangerous and I would recommend getting a car.

What the Tesla Model S Battery Replacement Price Doesn't Say - PluginCars.com

What the Tesla Model S Battery Replacement Price Doesn't Say - PluginCars.com | Affordable High Performance Cars | Scoop.it

PluginCars.com has this great article about the new Tesla Model S. Like I have said earlier in my scoops this is one of the cars to keep watching. Tesla just came out by saying they will replace all the parts under their warranty and service plan, but only for 3 years. To combat individuals who say that the car will be too expensive to have and service afterwards Tesla has released the replacement pricing details and promises that batteries will be manufactured for the next 8 years for the car for sure.

I would strongly recommend purchasing a Tesla Model S, 0-60 in 4.4 seconds, and all electric with the range up to 350 miles, what is there not to like!....except the price. Luckily, the government offers close to $8000 tax discount.

The Future of the Audi TT is Looking Good | Blog - Signature Car Hire

The Future of the Audi TT is Looking Good | Blog - Signature Car Hire | Affordable High Performance Cars | Scoop.it

The Audi TT which I had scooped earliar is one of the flagship sports cars in Audi's luxury lineup. The MSRP is around $56,000 but the competitors say that there isn't enough power for the price. Audi is remedying that by adding more power, using their Audi TT race car to show the world how much performance they can actually push out of the little car.

Newer models of the TT should be coming out priced around $60 and $70 thousand but will have substantial performance boosts. The zero to 60 times will shave down to a little over 4 seconds.

Tire Tech Information - Measuring Tire Tread Depth with a Coin | Affordable High Performance Cars | Scoop.it

Wtih any car, especially high performance models, routine mantainance will have to be done to make sure that the car runs arlight. One of the most important things is to check your tire tread and make sure its satisfactory.

This guide by TireRack.com shows you how to use a variety of coins and check your tire tread to make sure it is sufficient enough to keep driving on. I have less than 2/32" left on my CTS V so that means I will be having to get a replacement soon.

How to Negotiate for a Used Car

How to Negotiate for a Used Car | Affordable High Performance Cars | Scoop.it

One of the biggest things I didn't touch upon is the fact that once you find the car that you want you can negotiate the price with the dealer and make it even more affordable.

The Art of Manliness writes about how to do so using a few tricks like knowledge is power. If you know more about the resale value of the car you're trying to buy you can negotiate with the dealer and be sucessful. Make sure you ask for rebates and other incentives if avaliable.

I know that last time I purchased a car the dealer didn't know that I had employee pricing so I got him to offer $2500 off the sticker and then pulled the employee pricing scheme. He had to sell me the car for the employee price minus $2500 saving me a lot.

Dual-clutch transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dual-clutch transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia | Affordable High Performance Cars | Scoop.it

So as many of you, hopefully, start looking into purchasing these cars a lot of technical knowledge will be spit at you like horsepower, torque, turbos, and equally as important the transmission.

For those of you who cannot drive a stick I would recommend getting the automatic and taking a test drive to make sure the shifts are smooth....alternatively you could just learn stick which would be the best solution. However, for those stick averse people you should make sure that your automatic transmission has a dual-clutch gearbox. This means that there are two seperate manaul transmissions working together in one housing making the shifts very very quickly. Popular cars that feature this type of transmission include many Porsches, GTRs, and the BMW M3.

2013 Scion FR-S Street Test Review

The affordable driver's car has returned and AutoGuide is back behind the wheel for a more thorough test. Scion's FR-S might just be the best performance bargain car our there according to AutoGuide.

Since the BIT330 site is down, on to more scooping! After watching this video you'll be able to get an overall review of the Scion FR-S and see the car. The only downside I see to this car is that the audio system looks like its from the 1980's, otherwise the $25k MSRP and weight to power ratio is great.

Best Exotic Car Under $100,000

Best Exotic Car Under $100,000 | Affordable High Performance Cars | Scoop.it

Secret Entourage writes a great article on the used car market. Most of the cars I have been scooping earlier have been new but due to how cars depreciate it can be a financially sound move to purchase used.

The list of used cars includes Lamborghinis, Porsches, Ferraris, and Aston Martins. How can this fit under the 100K limit? Because they're used!

They each have their own pros and cons. Below is a little summary from the site:

1. Lamborghini Gallardo: It will cost you but it’s amazing
2. Porsche 911 Turbo: The all around beast. Where is the beauty?
3. Ferrari 360 Modena: Sexy Ferrari, two words that are not associated with cheap.
4. Aston Vantage: A great new contender to the game, just a bit slow.

The era of bigger and badder engines is declining as the rise of turbo and superchargers take prominence now in the industry.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible: The Jalopnik Review

Previously I scooped the Chevy Camaro but for those looking to pack a litle more punch look into the ZL1. The ZL1 comes with a 6.2L supercharged V8 that produces 580 horsepower and 556 lb-ft of toque.

Jalopnik equates the ZL1 to eating McDonalds for a month and then trying to climb the Empire State building with all the extra weight. The Magentic Ride control gives it a smooth steady ride with a zero to 60 time under 4.4 seconds and $60,000k MSRP brand new for the 2013 model.

Fastest V12 Lamborghini VS Toyota Supra from Hell

One of the most tunable cars that have ever been produced is the Toyota Supra. A used one will set you back anywhere from $10-20k but the oppurtunities to tune it are endless. The engine can pretty much handle whatever turbo or supercharger kit you want to put into it. A stage 3 supercharger kit will easily give the Supra enough power to eliminate almost any car 0-60 and 1/4 mile. This video is a V12 Lamborghini vs a Toyota Supra with some mods and it's easy to see how quick the Supra is compared to the more expensive Lamborghini.

All-Wheel Drive Makes The XJ The Jaaaaag That Can Jump Over Dunes

All-Wheel Drive Makes The XJ The Jaaaaag That Can Jump Over Dunes | Affordable High Performance Cars | Scoop.it

Jaguar is known as the epitome of British sporting elegance. What it isn't known for is being the epitome of all-weather performance. If you wanted to be Brittanically elegant in the wintertime, you needed a Land Rover, not anymore. The new Jaguar XJ comes with all wheel drive letting you utilize all of its 340 horsepower in the snow, rain, or wherever you may be.

The new all wheel drive system specifically developed for the XF and XJ uses a transfer case, wet clutches, and some magic to vary the power between the front and rear wheels. It will give betwen 5 and 30 percent power to the front wheels in certain cases to make sure you are able to acclerate.

With an MSRP of $73,000 and zero to 60 times of 5 seconds or less depending on road conditions, this is definitely one of the cars you will want to purchase.

These models will have the new sleek and stylish looks of many of the other sports cars that are being released but with a relatively cheap price tag. The engine will be either a 2.0 liter turbocharged inline-four or 3.0-liter turbo-six. Needless to say, the turbos are what is going to give this car its kick.

Pricing hasn't been released to the market but analysts predicted that it will run around $60,000.

How to Avoid Buying a Lemon

How to Avoid Buying a Lemon | Affordable High Performance Cars | Scoop.it

Wikihow writes this guide on how you can make sure that your next affordable high performance car isnt a lemon.

A few things they recommend checking out are the carFax report, making sure the VIN is clean, and looking for verified dealers. Beware, the carfax might not always be accurate and the VINs could be swapped so take a look at the car yourself and make sure the dealer is reputable. If the price is to good to be true then it probably is.

Lastly, and most importantly, test drive the car so you can see if there are any creaks or noises or anything else wrong with the vehicle.

10 Cars That Depreciate Like a Stock Market Crash

10 Cars That Depreciate Like a Stock Market Crash | Affordable High Performance Cars | Scoop.it

Popular Mechanics lists a bunch of cars that depreciate rapidly, or as they say like a stock market crash. The one that they highlight is the BMW 7 series. The 7 series is one of the most expensive models going for aroudn $140,000 new fully loaded. Used on the other hand is a completely different market. A 2005 745i with 45,000 miles sold for $20,000 even.

The 7 series has all of BMW speed with a luxury component added to it. The 0 to 60 times are a little slow (6-8 seconds) but the luxury component makes up for this lack in speed.

GT-R vs Z06 vs GT500: 5-Figure Supercar Shootout!

Motor Trend pits the Forbes number 1 car ( GT500) against the Corvette Z06 and Nissan GTR.

The GT500 is concluded to the be the best mustang that Motor Trend has ever seen but with the fraction of the price it also performs at a fraction of the price. The Z06 was the most raciest car out of the bunch but MotorTrend said they wouldnt want to take it out unless they were wearing racing suits and helmets every day.

Rather, they concluded that the Nissan GTR was the winner out of them all with calling it the "ultimate jump in and go car" and saying "rarely is a car so powerful and fast yet so forgiving."

The GT500 has a 0-60 time of ~4 seconds destroying most other cars in the same price range. With a 550 HP engine and a power curb weight ratio of 6.9 a sticker price of $49,605 will seem like a steal after you take it for a test drive.

Only catch is the car comes stricly in manual! So you better learn how to drive a stick...

#8 2012 Nissan NISMO 370Z - Althea Chang Auto Trend Tracker - Forbes

#8 2012 Nissan NISMO 370Z - Althea Chang Auto Trend Tracker - Forbes | Affordable High Performance Cars | Scoop.it

Forbes ranks the fastest cars under $50,000 with the NIssan 370Z coming in at number 8.

Having personally owned this car myself, I would recommend it to any car enthusiast not willing to shell out $100k+. I had the 370z Touring with the sport package which was a great combination. The depreciation on the car was pretty much 0 as I bought it new and was able to sell it for the same amount I paid for it.

The NISMO edition featured here by Forbes has a little more horsepower due to the fact that it has a different catback exhaust system. However, this comes with a rougher ride, which I personally disliked.

HowStuffWorks "How Horsepower Works"

HowStuffWorks "How Horsepower Works" | Affordable High Performance Cars | Scoop.it

I realized that I have been scooping a lot of cars and unloading specs like horsepower and torque without actually explaning what these mean. Basically, 1 horsepower is equivalent to 33,000 foot-pounds per minute. This was calculated by having a horse tied to a rope pull a bucket of coal.

Horsepower can be converted into other units like watts where 1 HP is equivalent to 746 watts, or 1,055 joules.  Most devices with an engine are rated by horsepower including your car, lawnmower, and even garage door opener.
