Wondering about Women: Media Culture Project: Who Skyy Vodka Advertisements Are Really Selling To | Alcohol and Tobacco Policy and Advertising | Scoop.it
zach jecklin william norman jonathan headley's insight:

"Advertisements such as these illustrate the media’s influence on our acceptance of portraying females as sexual objects. Instead of being angered by these blatantly sexist representations of women, we seem to embrace them under the assumption that they are an exaggeration and therefore untrue portrayals of modern women."

Sports and Alcohol Advertising – Crossing a Line | Millennial Marketing | Alcohol and Tobacco Policy and Advertising | Scoop.it
The rules around alcohol advertising and sports need to be re-examined. Why can't I visit CaptainMorgan.com without answering the question, Are You Old Enough
zach jecklin william norman jonathan headley's insight:

It is important to see how advertising with things such as alcohol can be mechanized through popular attractions like American sports. It is almost as if these advertising companies are being deceitful. It is intriguing the number of ways and where a particular product can be shown. Sports is just another way.

Super Bowl: Bud Light Commercial Features Wild Night, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Minka Kelly (Video)

Super Bowl: Bud Light Commercial Features Wild Night, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Minka Kelly (Video) | Alcohol and Tobacco Policy and Advertising | Scoop.it
While teasers were released last week, the latest Bud Light Super Bowl commercial was revealed in its entirety on Friday, and it promises to be one wild ride!
The hidden camera-style commercial opens with a normal looking guy in a bar being approached by a beautiful girl -- drinking a Bud Light, of course -- who sets the stage for adventure from the outset by asking: "If I give you this [beer] are you up for whatever happens next?"
zach jecklin william norman jonathan headley's insight:

Although this isn't a broadcasted commercial, it portrays the idea alcohol leads to positive effects. The events depicted in this Bug Light commercial communicate  that drinking will induce crazy, awesome stories that are consequence free. I believe that every one is aware of the fact that drinking has life threatening risks. However, take a young college student for example. Does a young mind look at a video like this and think immediately, "Wow, I hope I wouldn't die in a drunk driving accident" or, "This looks like an awesome time"? I think it is human nature to first look at the positive outcome of things. Who wouldn't? Young people like me for example, love having fun, and want to have memories that they can remember. That is why I think it is so significant that Alcohol and Tobacco advertising utilize glamour and the idea of making something look "cool" or "fun". It puts that first notion of positive outcome into one's mind making them forget the consequences these things could come with. Is it too powerful? Should it be permitted in our country to the extent that it is? Meaning, should it be allowed to target younger groups, to use women in a "sexy", possibly dehumanizing nature?  How does Alcohol and Tobacco portrayals of other countries compare to our own? These are the essential questions of our research.

Ludacris - One More Drink ft. T-Pain - YouTube

Music video by Ludacris performing One More Drink. YouTube view counts pre-VEVO: 3,394,091. (C) 2008 DTP Records, LLC
zach jecklin william norman jonathan headley's insight:

This music video is a perfect example of glorifying alcohol. It shows how alcohol can lead to good times. It also shows how it can lead to bad decisions. The problem with the "bad decision" portrayed in the video is that he is with an unattractive girl. This is showing that the looks are more important than anything else which is relaying that women are mere objects. These themes are common in our culture's music throughout multiple genres, but mainly rap. It is just another way the use of alcohol is depicted in a glorified, positive manner. It is especially impacting because in a music video like this, for instance, many of the listeners are of younger ages.

Children of the 90s: Joe Camel

Children of the 90s: Joe Camel | Alcohol and Tobacco Policy and Advertising | Scoop.it
zach jecklin william norman jonathan headley's insight:

" The Joe Camel ads, while certainly not as detrimental to society as moral watchdog groups would claim, absolutely came with myriad of mixed messages. The original Joe Camel ads (commemorating the company's 75th anniversary) featured the tagline, "75 Years and Still Smokin'". Perhaps this isn't the most welcome complement to anti-smoking programs in schools warning of emphysema and lung disease, but then again the ad isn't claiming that after 75 years you'll still be smoking. It's all in the semantics, you see."

zach jecklin william norman jonathan headley's insight:

Yes, sex does sell, but what price are we willing to pay? Alcohol advertisers need to understand the serious repercussions that these advertisements are having on our society and the negative effect it has on both men and women, because media portrays false gender representations, which shape the way we act, how we view people, the way we talk, our beliefs, and our culture.
