Writing allows for a multitude of word choices, and words are important; no doubt about it. Wisely choose and your readers will thank you.

This article shares some very nice lists and I do LOVE lists!  Writers should refer to these suggestions to scrape away bulky words. As a knife whittles wood into a new creation, that rambling, bare-bones piece of work can also bloom into something artful and beautiful.

Read like a writer if you want to learn and grow and find what engages an audience. Use the little post-it notes, as the author suggests, to mark parts of the book that speak to you.

Ask three questions as you read: What was Powerful? Why was it Powerful? How did it achieve that Power?

Was it dialogue? Character? Or something else? Doing this will help improve your skills and find the elusive voice.

Dr. Laura Sheneman's curator insight, June 2, 2015 9:14 AM

A reading transformation can occur in your school much like it has in my classroom, replacing fear and dread with excitement and self-expression. Students will read if they choose the books. They will write with voice and clarity if they have the ability to express their thoughts. They can change from reluctant to inspired readers if it happens on their own terms. All you have to do is flip the experience, turning the practice of reading on its head by making them the creators of their own learning.
