A glow stick is small plastic tube filled with two chemicals (usually hydrogen peroxide and diphenyl oxalate) which are separated by a thin layer of glass. When a glow stick is bent, the glass divider cracks causing the chemicals to mix, which creates a chemical reaction resulting in luminescence, or glowing, due to the specific properties of the chemicals used. Since the glow is produced with a chemical reaction, and many chemical reactions speed or slow down due to changes in temperature, glow sticks will last longer when cooled.
