In this new version, we have included clarification on Assessment OF, FOR and AS Learning.

>Individualization involves assessment OF learning. This is where summative assessment is grade-based and involves testing to confirm what learners know and do not know.

> Differentiation  involves assessment FOR learning and OF learning. This is assessment that involves time-based testing where teachers provide feedback to advance learning.

> Personalization involves assessment AS learning, FOR learning, and a minimal OF learning. This is where teachers develop capacity so learners become independent learners who set goals, monitor progress, and reflect on learning. Assessments are based on mastery.

I love this graphic of the difference between Personalisation, Differenctiation and Individulisation. We often use the words interchangeably but as with anything, the language becomes important when you are trying to communicate to people - including teachers.

I've used this with teachers at my school, in small groups, to talk about what it is we are actually doing in the classroom....

Turning Education Upside Down [flipped learning] - NY Times

Turning Education Upside Down [flipped learning] - NY Times | Adaptive learning and personalization | Scoop.it

by Tina Rosenberg

"Three years ago, Clintondale High School, just north of Detroit, became a “flipped school” — one where students watch teachers’ lectures at home and do what we’d otherwise call “homework” in class. Teachers record video lessons, which students watch on their smartphones, home computers or at lunch in the school’s tech lab. In class, they do projects, exercises or lab experiments in small groups while the teacher circulates.

"Clintondale was the first school in the United States to flip completely — all of its classes are now taught this way. Now flipped classrooms are popping up all over. Havana High School outside of Peoria, Ill., is flipping, too, after the school superintendent visited Clintondale. The principal of Clintondale says that some 200 school officials have visited."

"Its most important popularizers are not government officials or academic experts"  Wonderful example of not waiting for solutions, but being willing to think outside the box, test new things and create solutions, rather than waiting for "experts" to provide those solutions.

Nancy J. Herr's curator insight, October 11, 2013 12:00 PM

Could this be a trend for your school? Is this a way to keep those suspended, expelled and medically unable to attend school in your mainstream?

Joanne OLeary's curator insight, October 22, 2013 9:37 PM

As youth and adults become more self-directed and take personal responsibility for their education, the flipped classroom approach makes sense.  The same information is being disseminated to the learner, however the facilitated learning occurs when the teacher is "assisting" the learner with the application of knowledge during the "classroom-homework" stage (for the lack of a better term).

A Personalized Learning System is a culture shift and a change in process that impacts the entire school community. Moving to learner-centered environments is more than just handing over the keys to the learner so they drive their own learning right away. This process is about developing a self-sustaining Personalized Learning System with your staff. This is about building a human infrastructure based on a train-the-trainer model where lead coaches support site coaches who support your teachers. Teachers become partners in learning with their learners as learners take ownership of their learning. - See more at: http://www.personalizelearning.com/2013/09/personalized-learning-system.html#sthash.mk9RGeTD.dpuf
Antonia Rudenstine's curator insight, September 18, 2013 8:18 AM

There isn't much text to accompany this graphic, but the graphic does a great job of helping us see the need for creating an ecosystem for personalization: it can't be achieved through a 1:1 relationship between a teacher and a student, let alone through a 1:25 relationship of a teacher in a class with 25 students. It requires a complete reconceptualization of roles and relationships.

Rebirth of the Teaching Machine through the Seduction of Data Analytics: This Time It's Personal (April 2013)

Rebirth of the Teaching Machine through the Seduction of Data Analytics: This Time It's Personal (April 2013)  | Adaptive learning and personalization | Scoop.it

Notions of mechanized teaching machines captured the imagination of many in the late 19th and 20th century. Today, yet again, a new generation of technology platforms promise to deliver “personalized learning” for each and every student. This rebirth of the teaching machine centers on digital software tutors (known as adaptive learning systems) and their grand claims to individualize learning by controlling the pace, place and content for each and every student. This time around, however, it is personal.

Imagining Web 3.0: The Internet - With 100 Billion Clicks Per Day The Greatest Machine Humanity Ever Built

Imagining Web 3.0: The Internet - With 100 Billion Clicks Per Day The Greatest Machine Humanity Ever Built | Adaptive learning and personalization | Scoop.it

The internet at its current growth rate and development stands to be the greatest machine ever built in the history of humanity. This machine also happens to be the most reliable machine human beings have ever constructed. It has never crashed before and has always run uninterrupted. Consider the usage of the internet too.

There are over 100 billion clicks per day online, there are approximately five trillion links between all internet pages in the world and over two million emails are sent per second from all around the planet. The internet also accounts for five percent of all electricity used on the planet to keep it running continuously.

An approximation of the internet in terms of size and complexity resembles the way a human brain would function. The internet however is continuing to grow in size and complexity every two years. At the rate at which the internet is evolving, it is projected that by the year 2040, the internet will be able to store more knowledge and information and be able to operate at a higher level of cognisance than the whole of humanity combined.

Moving to a Personalized Learning Environment (PLE) is a culture shift. Moving an entire district or a region to a system with sustainable PLEs takes time and a process. PLEs are built on a human infrastructure with groups of people where some may be definitely ready and others resistant. Those that are ready may still hesitate to jump in unless they have the support and resources they need when they need it.
