15 Mistakes You’re Probably Making With Technology In Learning | E-Learning & iPads @ Aberconwy | Scoop.it
The role of technology in learning isn’t entirely clear–or rather, is subjective. While it clearly is able to provide access to peers, audiences, resources, and data, it also can be awkward, problematic, distracting, performing more strongly...

Be careful with letting students choose. Give them choices to choose from.

Jane Sowter-Maranion's curator insight, June 21, 2013 9:17 PM

Students should be able to collaborate on a single cloud based platform for class projects- not via an inaccessible school server.

17 right (and wrong) ways to use technology - Daily Genius via @plugusin

17 right (and wrong) ways to use technology - Daily Genius via @plugusin | E-Learning & iPads @ Aberconwy | Scoop.it

"The world of education is one of the many things we focus on here at the Daily Genius. We like to encourage you to learn in new ways – through viral content, interesting videos, and visuals that we think are worth your time.

If you’re interested in education OR technology, then this is a great graphic you should check out. It’s via Bill Ferriter who shared this with the world on Twitter quite awhile ago. Why do we think it’s awesome? Because it’s a simple reminder of what we should all be striving for whilst using and promoting the usage of technology."

Texting 'can improve spelling' - BBC News

Texting 'can improve spelling' - BBC News | E-Learning & iPads @ Aberconwy | Scoop.it

"Children's unorthodox spelling and grammar while texting does not stop them learning the rules of formal English, suggests research.

Just over 160 children, aged between eight and 16, from the West Midlands, took part in the snapshot study.

The researchers compared spelling and grammar in formal tests and in text messages, at the start of the project and again after a year.

The results showed the most creative texters were among the best spellers.

The children were asked to copy out all their text messages over a two-day period."

Theophilus's curator insight, March 19, 2014 4:03 AM

What I like about this idea is the centrality of learning as opposed to the centrality of the device. We've discovered that sharing a device have far-reaching and positive possibilities for networking, interaction, teamwork and collaboration in the formal learning environment. OLPC is an example of a notion that goes the other way - individualism, not to mention, the complexities when trying to enable young learners to focus.

Don Breedwell's curator insight, March 23, 2014 3:48 PM

We will be deploying iPads after Spring break. Timely article.

Ness Crouch's curator insight, March 28, 2014 7:46 PM

Very useful ideas. I think I will try applying some of these to my classroom.

Apps that rise to the top: Tested and approved by teachers - Mind/Shift

Apps that rise to the top: Tested and approved by teachers - Mind/Shift | E-Learning & iPads @ Aberconwy | Scoop.it

With the thousands of educational apps vying for the attention of busy teachers, it can be hard to sift for the gold. Michelle Luhtala, a savvy librarian from New Canaan High School in Connecticut has crowd-sourced the best, most extensive list of appsvoted on by educators around the country.

“I wanted to make sure we had some flexibility because there’s no one app that’s better than all the others,” Luhtala said. Some apps are best for younger students, others are more complicated, better suited for high school students. Many apps do one thing really well, but aren’t great at everything. Still others are bought, redesigned or just disappear — so it’s always good to know about an array of tools to suit the need at hand.
