UK poultry sector to show growth of 30% in 9 years

UK poultry output is to grow by a further 1.9m birds per week by the end of 2016, taking its growth over nine years to 30%, helped by a switch from red meat, the head of one of the country's top producers said.

Janet McCollum, chief executive of Moy Park, responsible for about on-quarter of UK poultry output, said that the country's industry was benefiting from "positive structural growth", contrasting with a stagnant beef sector.

UK poultry output - which has already risen, in slaughter terms, from 14.7m birds per week at the end of 2007 to 17.2m birds per week – will hit 19.1m head by the end of 2016.

The increase is being supported in part by the UK's growing population, rising by 0.7% a year and expected to reach 70m by 2030, but also by a growing place for chicken in the diet, thanks to its lower price compared with red meat, and its place a relatively healthy protein.

UK sales of poultry are expected to maintain annual growth of 1.6%, rising from 738,000 tonnes this year to 778,000 tonnes in 2017.

Meanwhile, sales of beef and veal, and pork, will show growth of only 0.1% a year, to 2017 levels of 442,000 tonnes and 314,000 tonnes respectively.

White meat accounts for more than 50% of UK meat consumption, compared with about 30% some to decades ago, according to Shore Capital.

Imports replaced

However, the replacement of imports, sourced from the likes of Brazil, Thailand and continental Europe, will also play a big role in supporting the UK industry.

"Despite the rise in UK production of poultry, we still rely on imports for 38%" of supplies, Ms McCollum told the Shore Capital Agri-Food conference in London.

The quest to replace imports is being helped by the fallout from last year's so-called "horsegate" scandal, which stemmed from the discovery of horsemeat in beefburgers being exported from the Irish Republic to the UK.

"What we have seen is that consumers are concerned for a UK provenance. They want to know where their food has come from," she said, flagging that Moy Park, part of the Brazil-based Marfrig Group, was responsible its own chicken genetics, and feed production.

Window demand

Animal welfare also played a larger role in consumer thinking, Ms McCollum said, stressing the group's "commitment" to the "highest standard animal husbandry" – even down to demanding windows in chicken sheds.

"It is good for both the farmers and the bird," she said.

"It is no different from having an office without windows, or an office with windows."
