"The Arrest of Oscar Wilde at the Cadogan Hotel" by John Betjeman (poetry reading)

It may be hard to understand now how much British society was dominated by class differences. The upper class spoke what was virtually a different language f...

 

The Cadogan has  (I believe)  a green carnation package deal ..and a Langtry restaurant ..my Grandmother was a Langtry  ..and seemingly they are a rare breed ..maybe I need to flourish my father's birth cert..like a card trick ..maybe it will conjure up ..a green flower. In the meantime, I love this poem by John Betjeman. He is like a raconteur who was a witness to the actual events.  I visited the Courthouse, also now an Hotel, where Oscar, god love his socks, was hauled up before the Magistrates, before his removal to Reading Gaol.  He was in illustrious company.
