“The LRA has killed Congolese civilians and abducted Congolese children for too long,” said Dr. Shelly Whitman, Executive Director of The Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative. ...

Josiah's insight:

The LRA (lords Resistance army) has been abducting children and attacking innocent bystanders.  The LRA have abducted 35 people in 20 attacks. The  MONUSCO are supposed to protect the people in the DRC, but the MONUSCO could be doing more. The MONUSCO need to  be working closely with the civil society if they are to be effective.  I think that the army needs to track down the LRA and put an end to their attacks.  I know this would involve a lot of lives lost, but it would be worth it.  It is also possible (my theory) that the MONUSCO are in league with the LRA, or at least some of them.

As violence continues, the people of South Sudan say the boys are needed for protection.

Josiah Ryan's insight:

This article changed my thinking a lot. I never thought of it the way this article explained it.  I never thought that boys that young would be allowed to join the ranks of any military.  But when you are defending your very lives against a force that will not hesitate to kill you, when your country is not able to help you, maybe it is time to take matters into your own hands.  These boys are soldiers not because they have to, but because they want to, this is what really strikes me.  Maybe it would be better if someone would step in, someone who had "the peoples" best interest in mind.  Someone who had the power, and the will to help these people.  Why is it that as I write this in America, with no fear of attack from anyone, these people in Africa die because people don't help others, people only think about themselves.

IITA maize holds solution to Africa's drought

IITA maize holds solution to Africa's drought--Researchers Daily Times Nigeria A press release issued on Monday by IITA's Communications Officer, Godwin Atser, said the maize were of extra-early maturing genotypes developed and conserved at the...
Josiah Ryan's insight:

This text section explains that there is a special type of artificial maze that are not as effected by drought as regular maze.  Some of this maze has already been sent to some parts of west Africa.  I think that genetically mutated maze is a good Idea, IF it has no harmful effect to humans, animals, and nature in general.  When we tinker with things we shouldn't, bad things tend to happen.  I also think that this maze could start major health problems in Africa, ones that could start a mass killing of the people that live in the parts of Africa that have been given the genetic maze.

The Earth Hour Forest in Uganda

The world's first Earth Hour Forest will soon be created in the East African nation of Uganda, to fight against the 6000 hectares of deforestation that occur...

Josiah Ryan's insight:

In Uganda, if nothing is done to stop deforestation, than by 2050 Ugandan wood supply will be gone.  This struck me, I thought of Africa as a lush wooded area where wood, and things to burn were plentiful.  But this video shows that the wood in Uganda is not so plentiful, and something needs to be done to stop it.  If people could plant a tree for every tree they cut down, that a simple task could change their lives.

German rifles may land in child soldiers' hands

As a young boy, Michael was forced to become a soldier in his home country, Sierra Leone, where he fought against rebel forces for five years.
Josiah Ryan's insight:

This line struck me, "Worldwide, more than 250,000 children as used as soldiers," said Antje Weber that is an amount that is way too high in my opion, out of those children some could have become great, influincers of the African countries.  The government is just breeding a new generation of war.  These kids are Africas future if countries want to have a good, smart, well educated generation, than these countries must stop taking children out of thier home, and making them fight for causes they know nothing about.
