Awakenings: First 911 Call

Awakenings: First 911 Call | 911 Dispatch ~ News | Scoop.it

This Day in History: February 16, 1968

The first 911 call in America was placed from the mayor's office in Haleyville, AL on February 16, 1968. It was made by Alabama Speaker of the House, Rankin Fite and answered by Congressman Tom Bevill a short distance away at the police station. While this was the first of its kind in the United States, the ability to dial a single number to report emergencies was first used in Great Britain in 1937. The British put the number 999 into service for emergency calls to police, medical or fire departments from anywhere in the country.

To truly appreciate this post, think back to the days of the telephone operator...a time when you had to wait for a live person to put your call through as you frantically said, "Get me the police", "I want to report a fire", "I need an ambulance/doctor" or simply "HELP!"

Disconnected 911 call leads police to meth lab in Florida home

Disconnected 911 call leads police to meth lab in Florida home | 911 Dispatch ~ News | Scoop.it

A disconnected 9-1-1 call led Volusia County deputies to a Deltona home where they found a meth lab and "meth bugs," people with swollen sores all over their faces, Sheriff's Office reports show.

Deputies also found 52 ounces of meth oil, arrest reports said.

Kyle Tuton, 29, is charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to manufacture and sell, and trafficking. His wife, Leah Morgan, 27, faces three "drug offenses," jail records show.

Deputies went to 3499 Monument Drive in Deltona on Saturday at 1:57 p.m. after someone called 9-1-1 and left the line open and dispatchers heard someone threatening a person with a knife. When deputies arrived at the home they met Tuton, who said he and his wife were arguing over the fact that his wife believed he no longer found her attractive, deputies said...

Florida man called 911 over 1,200 times this year

Florida man called 911 over 1,200 times this year | 911 Dispatch ~ News | Scoop.it

Tampa, Florida -- By law, cell phones are required to allow a person to dial 911, even if they are not paying for any service.

Hillsborough County deputies say one man abused that privilege by calling 911 using an unregistered cell phone... more than one thousand times.

38-year-old Jason Michael Honaker was arrested and charged with seven felony counts of fals 911 calls, with more charges possible. Investigators say that since December 31, Honaker called the emergency number more than 1,200 times. Sometimes Honaker would allegedly ramble on, while other times he wouldn't speak at all.

Deputies say Honaker confessed to making many of the calls. He was taken into jail on $14,000 bond...

NC: Asheville's 911 Calls Now Sent 400 Times Faster | WLOS News13

NC: Asheville's 911 Calls Now Sent 400 Times Faster | WLOS News13 | 911 Dispatch ~ News | Scoop.it
First responders are now receiving 911 calls made by Asheville residents 400 times faster. A fiber optic network is now connecting 12 fire stations and four police stations has been installed in the city. "The time between the dispatcher hitting the button saying 'Hey we need a fire station' and the fire station actually being alerted was probably sub-minute," said Asheville Chief Information Officer Jonathan Feldman. "But it wasn't sub-second." Cables have been installed underground and via aerial poles across the city. The fiber speeds up rescuer response times, from the formerly wirless system, by 400 percent, city officials say. The project was installed through a partnership between the city and the Education and Research Consortium of the Western Carolinas, which paid for the network with a state grant encouraging the expansion of fiber optic technology. If the city had installed the network independently, it would have cost $5 million.

911 Call: Naked man terrorizes Florida family, masturbates in their living room, poops in hallway, gets Tased by cops

911 Call: Naked man terrorizes Florida family, masturbates in their living room, poops in hallway, gets Tased by cops | 911 Dispatch ~ News | Scoop.it
In Florida, there are violent people, naked people, poopers and masturbators -- but rarely is one man the total package. When Tony and LaDonna Land discovered naked carnival worker Gregory Matthew Bruni on their roof, the night had just begun.

When Tony and LaDonna Land discovered naked carnival worker Gregory Matthew Bruni on their roof, the night had just begun. Bruni, 21, allegedly assaulted Tony Land, trashed the couple's North Fort Myers Home, and then defecated and masturbated inside the house, WTSP reports.

The Lands told police they were in their bedroom at around 7 p.m. Monday when they heard a noise that sounded like thunder, according to Fox 4 Now. Tony went outside and says he saw Bruni on top of the roof, completely naked. Bruni allegedly jumped down on top of Land, ABC 7 reported, then knocked him over by hitting him in the shoulder.

"I don't know who the hell he is -- he's naked and he ran into my damn house," Tony can be heard saying on the recording...

Sleeping 911 supervisor costs Florida taxpayers $75,000 in lawsuit after woman chokes to death

Sleeping 911 supervisor costs Florida taxpayers $75,000 in lawsuit after woman chokes to death | 911 Dispatch ~ News | Scoop.it

Land O'Lakes, Florida -- It is a story that the 10 News Investigators first brought to light in 2007 involving a Land  O'Lakes woman who choked to death on a piece of steak. Her family is picking up a $75,000 check from Pasco County because of negligence and apparent indifference by Pasco 911.

Almost six years ago, a call came into Pasco 911 as Nancy McGhee was choking to death in her Pasco home. The 911 operator asked McGhee's boyfriend, Chris Cooper, if he could do the Heimlich Maneuver, but he couldn't figure out how to do it.

The 911 operator, Jenny Montanino, wasn't certified to tell him how to do it, so she asked her supervisor Dave Cook to take over.

During the call, the tone in Cook's voice seems laced with frustration, because he couldn't get Cooper to perform the maneuver. Cook finally said, "You can't do it... all right, I'm going to give you back to the operator, OK?"

Cook is the same supervisor we uncovered sleeping on the job prior to this incident. And the confusion in Pasco 911 was a factor that kept units from responding in the acceptable time frame of four to eight minutes... (click pic to watch video)

Drunk Florida woman calls 911 because she's lonely -- five times | 911 Dispatch ~ News | Scoop.it

Fleurette French, 64, found that out the hard way March 30 after being arrested on an abuse of 911 charge, according to recently released records.

An Indian River County Sheriff's deputy at 8:10 p.m. went to an address in the 2000 block of Pine Creek Boulevard in Vero Beach for a medical call.

French dialed 911 for a medical issue, along with the fact that she'd been imbibing. She "was in no obvious distress" but "was highly intoxicated."

A firefighter/medic told a deputy "French told him the real reason she called 911 was 'because she was lonely.'" French was taken to Indian River Medical Center...

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) - A 51-year-old Florida man got a trip to jail for drunk-dialing 911.

Authorities weren't amused when Pockrandt called 911 again three hours later and mumbled to the dispatcher, "My drug dealer is mad at me..."
