Educational Technology and Mobile Learning: Teacher 's Guide on Creating Personal Learning Networks

Educational Technology and Mobile Learning: Teacher 's Guide on Creating Personal Learning Networks | 7-12 Social Studies | Scoop.it

As social media become more and more predominant as platforms of connection and collaboration, the need for creating and maintaining a PLN ( Personal/Professional Learning Network ) becomes more pressing. As teachers and educators we are expected to be on top of the latest trends that can inform and enhance our classroom teaching as well as our professional growth. We are also expected to know the web tools that our students use and the new ones we can use with them in the future; but this is not always possible and because not all of our time constraints it becomes difficult to keep up the the new releases . It is at times like these that you can call upon your PLN.

What Students Can Actually DO With An iPad

What Students Can Actually DO With An iPad | 7-12 Social Studies | Scoop.it

Online, in workshops, and even with friends, I frequently get asked What can the iPad actually do? as a sort of challenge to the worth of the device. I would rather that they ask, What can you actually do with an iPad?

This is Greg Kulowiec's website.  He's a social studies teacher in Mass.  He is also an awesome contributor to #sschat on twitter.  He does tons of PD work especially about using iPads (meanginfully!) in the social studies classroom.

He has lots about using GoogleDocs and using GoogleApps in the classroom as well.

Adding to our digital community, this article provides multiple resources to create a digital classroom using multiple 2.0 technology resources. It provides not only ways to digitize your classroom for the teacher, but also technologies for students to incorporate in their learning. Greg provides a great resource that should be a read for all technology based teachers or teachers looking to begin that transition.

Great idea for Project Based Learning is a social studies classroom. We read in the Essentials for Project Based Learning that the topic must be meaningful for students. This teacher suggests students come up with and investigate historical topics starting with A through Z.

The video of the student's final project is on the website (I recommend taking a look!)

This article relates to the Transitional courses article (above) by integrating technology. Luckily, the high school I attended required lap tops so I was very familiar with various programs/applications. I discovered, however, that many of my classmates in college were unfamiliar with programs such as iMovie. Using these programs in elementary classrooms is beneficial to expose students to technology as well as storytelling purposes.
