6 Traits of Writing – Professional Development - Target Picture Writing to Improve Sentence Writing

6 Traits of Writing – Professional Development - Target Picture Writing to Improve Sentence Writing | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

Communicating in pictures is the first form of writing-on-paper primary teachers address. The power of more picture details is that students then have more details to label. The more they label, the more they can write and develop. This produces young writers who can do more than draw a picture and write a single sentence. They can draw a picture and write numerous sentences!

But don’t just tell students to draw with details, teach them how. There are several explicit lessons you could address within these first weeks of school. Take your time as you introduce these new concepts in lessons. Each idea might require more than a one-day mini-lesson.

Common Core State Standards Accelerates Interest in Online Professional Development - National Writing Project

Common Core State Standards Accelerates Interest in Online Professional Development - National Writing Project | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

Excerpt from Article

Tanya Baker, the director of national programs for the National Writing Project, the Berkeley, Calif.-based nonprofit organization with multiple sites throughout the country that provides resources and professional development to writing teachers, said the writing portion of the standards also represents a shift to a richer and more rigorous understanding of writing.

"Teachers with a significant amount of experience might not have very much experience with the kind of teaching that would lead kids to be successful with these standards," she said.

"My worry about online professional development around common-core standards is that it'll be one-size-fits-all," Ms. Baker said. "Even as we're thinking nationally, we need to be aware locally" of teachers' specific backgrounds and instructional methods.

From Annenberg Teacher Resources: ;8 1-hour videos.

Developing Writers: A Workshop for High School Teachers presents practical and philosophical advice for teaching writing, while examining issues every teacher faces — such as high-stakes assessments and dealing with differently abled students. Eight video programs feature teachers in diverse classrooms around the country who are helping their students grow as skilled and effective writers. Participants will observe how the teachers and their students work together to create writing communities. Professional writers will share their processes as they move from initial concepts to publication, and comments from researchers, theorists, students, and teachers add context. A workshop guide and Web site provide activities and additional information to help participants develop effective instructional strategies to bring back to the classroom.

6 Traits of Writing – Professional Development - More Than Happy, Glad, Sad, Mad

6 Traits of Writing – Professional Development - More Than Happy, Glad, Sad, Mad | 6-Traits Resources | Scoop.it

If you ask students to identify how a character is feeling in a story, you might hear one of the following three words pop up: happy, sad, mad. Character emotions and traits are not something children automatically understand. To help students with this, we need to be intentional.

Inferencing a character’s feelings or personality traits is complicated. It involves looking beyond the words. It takes time to build this skill in young readers. Making it tangible can help. One way to make it more concrete is to put a face to it. Here are three activities, all of which will help with reading into a character’s personality and emotions.
