Election Other - Congressional Job Approval

Election Other - Congressional Job Approval | 4 Schaffer Christian | Scoop.it
RealClearPolitics Polls
4 Schaffer Christian's insight:

According to RCP polls about congressional approval ratings, America has an 18% approval rating to Congress. I personally think this shallow percentage could be linked to a low political efficacy among Americans. When the question arises, "how do incumbents have 90% reelection rate?" it should be clear that the "90%" and "18%" are not synonymous whatsoever. The 18% of Americans who vote in approval for congress may make up 100% of the voters for Congress. Out of those 18%, 90% of them vote for the incumbent seat in whichever Congressional denomination they are voting on. Personally I believe that the Framers of the Constitution didn't create a hated- congress, but throughout the years there has been a vast amount of twisting and altering to congressional operations which caused people to disapprove.

4 Schaffer Christian's insight:

This video provided interesting information about a breakthrough in congress. The first woman ever elected to Congress - Jeanette Rankin - was elected in 1916; this was before women could even vote. Another very interesting fact is that in America today, women make up more than 50% of the US population. Contradictingly, women only make up 15% of the population in congress. With this it isn't hard to come to conclusion that America still somewhat lives with patriarchal principles.

Committees · House.gov

4 Schaffer Christian's insight:

I chose the House Rules Committee, obviously they reside in the House of Reps. The Chairman of this Committee is Pete Sessions, a representative out of Texas. The Rules Committee's name implies what issues they deal with, rules within the House. There are two different types of rules, original jurisdiction measures (general rules in the house) and special rules (rules on debates and other matters). Republicans have the majority in this committee. *special note* This committee is known as the "speaker's committee" because they operate the same way the Speaker of the House does to keep the House of Representatives under control.

4 Schaffer Christian's insight:

This political cartoon is about the Hilary Clinton email scandal. The cartoon shows how Hilary Clinton is physically saying she will openly let people see her email. However the glass casing around the laptop is symbolic for how she's not going to let the public dig deeper into her email than what the government will allow the press to see. The state department is going through her emails to decide what can be showed to the public, ergo the public does not see everything which was in Hilary's email.

Republicans unmoved by Clinton email release | 4 Schaffer Christian | Scoop.it
Democrats sought to defend the former secretary of state, pointing to examples of several 2016 GOP presidential hopefuls using private email to conduct business
4 Schaffer Christian's insight:

Along with the Fox news post, this post by MSNBC is opinionated as well. For one, the post is a main headline, but not the first thing you see on the page. Furthermore,  the title of the post does not address Hilary Clinton with a negative connotation,  it actually addresses Republicans and the fact that they're not satisfied with Clinton still. After reading this article, the reader finds out that MSNBC is strongly suggesting that Ms. Clinton is doing her best to be open with the public and the Republicans refuse to be satisfied. This is a clear indication that MSNBC is a news team with predominantly liberal ideology.

They have large campaign contributions to 95% republican federal committees. Raising several 10 millions of dollars, they are very generous with donations. They have received several lawsuits against them regarding their second amendment rights, but suing companies did not avail. 4 Schaffer Christian's insight:

The NRA's Political Victory Fund is one of the top PACs when it comes to accumulated revenue. Just this campaign season, they have raised $14.1 million, and still have nine months left to campaign. According to OpenSecrets, The NRA fund has a few unrevealed "tricks up their sleeves" in order to campaign harshly against New York's mayor who is using $50 million to campaign for gun control laws. The PAC has apparently already donated $246,000 to several federal committees, and gave over $1.2 million in 2010. This seems to be their biggest year yet.

OpenSecrets.org has fundraising profiles for all 535 members of Congress (and more).
4 Schaffer Christian's insight:

"Earmarks" are grants given to a members district or state to keep their constituents happy. For example, Jody Hice may attach a rider onto a current bill trying to pass in the House which grants one million  dollars to fund education in Henry County schools. One Representative known as Jim Moran gave the largest amount of Earmarks in 2010. Analogously, he raised nearly $1.5 million in that year for campaign contributions. It is then easy to connect a members earmarks with their contributions they will receive in the future (aka some members may do it for personal gain.

4 Schaffer Christian's insight:

In the impeachement process, information is first presented to the speaker of the House. Afterward, the speaker presents said information to the rules committee,  which afterward passes on the the judiciary committee. The judiciary committee then votes yay or nay on whether they feel the political figure is guilty, if yay, it is forwarded to the house to vote on it. If the house votes yes, the Senate will hold a trial, if the person being held acountable is the president, the chief justice of the supreme court presides over the senate. If the person is guilty,  they are removed from office, the inverse is easily implicated.

Congressman Jody Hice

Congressman Jody Hice | 4 Schaffer Christian | Scoop.it
Representing the 10th District of Georgia
4 Schaffer Christian's insight:

Jody Hice voted 'yes' on a recent bill known as H.R.  1030 which is the Secret Science Reform Act. This disallows the EPA to disclose any ongoing information they have to the public. Jody Hice can perform many services for constituents in his district, such as: help meeting the president, hold art competitions, give military academy nominations, and help contact a federal agency. It was and awe-inspiring experience to meet a representative from the house to hear him talk about several issues regarding current events. Not only that, he also gave us a jist of what it is like to live the every day life as a congress member. Overall, it was an exciting experience to have Jody Hice visit the school.

Hillary Clinton breaks silence on email controversy

Hillary Clinton breaks silence on email controversy | 4 Schaffer Christian | Scoop.it
After two days of silence, Hillary Clinton weighed in on the controversy surrounding her use of a personal email address during her tenure as secretary of state late on Wednesday night, saying she had asked the State Department to release her emails. “I want the public to see my email,” she tweeted after spending the night at a gala for...
4 Schaffer Christian's insight:

Hilary Clinton was apparently using her private email as a transport for data regarding political affairs. After this travesty was discovered upon, she immediately apologized. Moreover, she eventually request that these emails be released to the public after being filtrated by the  in order to prove she did nothing wrong. In my opinion, there are two things wrong with this situation: first off emails can be deleted, number two, the state department can release whatever they do or do not please. This scandal is a continuous event even after the release of the emails.

Clinton used personal email – but ousted ambassador was chastised for doing the same | 4 Schaffer Christian | Scoop.it
While Hillary Clinton tries to deflect suggestions of wrongdoing in her use of a personal email account to conduct governmental business during her years as secretary of state, a U.S. ambassador under her watch was sharply reprimanded for doing the same -- and reportedly, it contributed to his being forced to resign.
4 Schaffer Christian's insight:

On this post by fox news, they use strong media bias. The post is directly and boldy displayed on the homepage of the website. After reading the post, you find many instances where fox points out that Scott Gration did this same thing and was "chastised" for the incident. Fox news says "this happened to him, why not her" obviously the fact that Hilary Clinton is a Democrat strongly suggests this biased post towards her "scandal".

4 Schaffer Christian's insight:

527 Committees- From a name resulting from the IRS tax code, these political funding groups are committees disassembled from the usual PACs of the political world. They willingly donate money and create campaign ads and other forms of propaganda to help political figures of their choice. Since they are "free-willingly" donating money, there is no limit to what amount of money they can donate, unlike PACs. These 527 groups have become the primary source for campaign funding, and for good reason too.
