Pieces, pattern Lines, collage: An exhibition from the collection of the Valencian Institute for Modern Art

Pieces, pattern Lines, collage: An exhibition from the collection of the Valencian Institute for Modern Art | c l o r o p h y l l a * | Scoop.it
VALENCIA.- A hundred years have passed since collage was invented and popularised in the international art world as a surprising and skilful figurative strategy openly at odds with the tradition of illusion: the constructive canon of European...

Collage is the art of superimposition, of the meaningful unit forcibly placed between somewhat unorthodox and sometimes antagonistic perceptible items, an art "of discontinuity, montage and fragments, of cut and paste". We must not forget – and it is an essential condition of survival for any public art space – that the contemporary sensibility declares itself in a variety of frequently conflicting ways. And so, of course, they go back to collage, as art and as artistic attitude, as a hazardous horizon of imagination that we might describe as soluble – the preferred term nowadays is liquid – prepared for action in any ideal sphere of perceptual signification. Which would call into question once again the incisive observation made by Ortega y Gasset in 1925, showing caution at a time of backlash against the avant-garde: "The art of the past is not art, it was art."

The artists and works selected for this occasion reveal the extent of the risk that the IVAM took in the early days of its collection. The artists are decisive: Schwitters, Moholy-Nagy, László Péri, Hamilton, Rauschenberg, Oldenburg … to name only those that are of unquestionable international stature. Moreover, as a methodological guide to aid the visitor, the works are arranged in sections of simply descriptive categories that indicate a possible itinerary and help us to appreciate these works and objects of art, always unusual and autonomous, and their formal contribution to a dazzling figurative riddle still capable of surprising the most exacting visitor: I. Matter. Form II Image. Figure III.Sign and Gesture IV.Memory, Tradition and Experimentation V.Narrative and Action

Atmospheres of Protest Symposium on Sustainability and Contemporary Art

Atmospheres of Protest Symposium on Sustainability and Contemporary Art | c l o r o p h y l l a * | Scoop.it

Atmospheres of Protest Symposium on Sustainability and Contemporary Art at Central European University on 11 May 2012 looks set to be a fantastic event with brilliant speakers. There are also plans for a live video stream if you’re not able to be there in person.

The upsurge of new popular movements from Egypt to Greece and Bucharest to New York has engendered an atmosphere of defiance and social creativity that has captured the global imagination. Beyond the ebb and flow of individual protest movements, this symposium asks whether global solidarity has really taken hold this time and considers the variety of ways in which contemporary art is embroiled through practices of dialogue and collaboration in the emergence of a common horizon and the imagining of a sustainable future. Providing a trans-disciplinary forum for discussion of the vital issues bridging the fields of art and environmental thought, the symposium sheds light on our understanding of the multifarious notion of sustainability, which appears by turns as a radical concept in global ecological thinking, can be recruited as a corporate strategy for green capitalism, and may act as a spur to new forms of social activism.

Land Art South Africa: Sunset Beach, Western Cape

Land Art South Africa: Sunset Beach, Western Cape | c l o r o p h y l l a * | Scoop.it

As part of 350.org's Climate Impacts Day - a global day of action which took place on 5 May 2012 - a small group of us created dots with pebbles on Sunset Beach, Milnerton, after doing a beach cleanup. The overall aim by 350 for the day was to issue a wake-up call, and connect the dots between climate change and extreme weather. To educate, protest, create, document, and volunteer along with thousands of people around the world.

On some beaches the amount of plastic outnumbers the amount of rocks and shells. Sunset Beach is part of the Cape West Coast, and the impact of pollution was our focus as we created our dots after doing a beach cleanup.
