GOP homes in on controversial Sotomayor speeches - CNN.com

GOP homes in on controversial Sotomayor speeches - CNN.com | 4 McDonald Kinsley | Scoop.it
Questions surrounding Judge Sonia Sotomayor's past speeches generated more controversy in the final day of her Supreme Court confirmation hearings Thursday, as Democrats again called her a mainstream jurist and Republicans portrayed her as a liberal activist likely to legislate from the bench.
4 McDonald Kinsley's insight:

Several things effect what a president looks for in a nominee as a supreme court justice. One factor, is their back ground. Before being nominated, a justice's background is heavily considered. What they have said or done in the past can seriously effect what people think of them. Another factor, is their political ideology. Although justices try their best to be indifferent, they still have personal opinions that may line up with a particular party. Many people are against judges like this because they believe that they will treat cases unfairly in the favor of their ideology. Another large factor to consider, is their judicial philosophy.

The EPA is independent from congress because they are experts and congressmen are not. The Employees of the EPA are scientists and can make much better decisions concerning the environment. Currently, they are battling against a pipe line that was to be built from Canada to the US, destroying miles of land as it went.

The White House Is No Place for Wimps

The White House Is No Place for Wimps | 4 McDonald Kinsley | Scoop.it
Lyndon Johnson got things done. Yes, he was a visionary—the architect of sweeping social and economic programs that transformed life in the United States and that still shape our nation today. But in the many hours I spent working for LBJ, I saw that he had much more than big ideas: He knew how to make them happen. How to trade, to cajole, to...
4 McDonald Kinsley's insight:

This article discussed the president and his policies. According to this article, the best way to get things done is to be bold. To hug the middle ground and to try and please everyone leads to nothingness. You have to be an activist to be successful Those that go down in history were the ones to make change, and they didnt do it by sitting in the middle.

This was a very in depth game. First, you had to win the primary. You did this by talking about wedge issues and running media ads. You had to travel to different places to make appearances so they would like you. You also had to fund raise in states that had money to offer. then you had to win the general election by getting Everyone to like you.

4 McDonald Kinsley's insight:

Honestly, I didn't like this game. The purpose was to see if the vote you cast made sense in comparison to the approval rating of their answers to your questions. Neither of the candidates made arguments that I approved of. Had this been a real election, I would have hoped for another candidate or not voted at all. But, the point was to ensure people's votes make sense according to what's most important to them.

4 McDonald Kinsley's insight:

Primaries and caucuses are both ways of electing officials to run in the general election. Each state has one or the other. In a primary, people go to a polling place, cast their vote, and the candidate from each party with the most votes wins. There are several kinds of primaries though; open, closed, and blanket. In a caucus, people meet in places like churches and schools and there are speeches given to plead people to vote for one candidate or the other, and then people vote.

4 McDonald Kinsley's insight:

Super PACs are not PACs at all. PACs have limits placed on them because they are directly associated with the candidate. Super PACs have no limits and are not "directly" associated with the candidate. They are individual expenditure only committees. After 2010, super PACs exploded because they were no longer illegal. These committees can raise as much money as they want from committees, individuals, and corporations.

4 McDonald Kinsley's insight:

    Dear Mr.Hice,

I am writing to you as a concerned constituent within your district. I am currently of voting age and an AP government student in high school. First and foremost, I would like to thank you for choosing to actively participate in our government policy making process. Secondly, I would like to cordially invite you to come speak to our AP government class. I believe your insight would be vastly influential and educational. And finally, the most prevalent cause for which I write is to urge you to abandon your stance on abortion.

I am fully aware of your stanch conservative background and would like to begin by expressing the libertarian standpoint from which I plead. I do believe you to be a man of rationality and high intelligence. Therefor I know you will reconsider your opinion on the matter of abortion. The bill you have proposed states that human life will begin at fertilization. Although I understand your stance and agree that life of all types matter, I ask you this; does the life of the mother not matter? That child may or may not be the downfall of both the mother and the child itself. Who knows best what they are capable of providing besides the provider themselves? If a mother chooses to abort the child that she herself conceived, that is her given liberty as an American. No one should be able to take that right from her. You may not agree with her decision, then I implore you to not participate. There are things that happen every day that I disapprove of. This does not however make them Wrong. Unless someone is personally infringing on my well being, there is no reason for me to oppose their actions. The mother who aborts her child is not doing so out of carelessness or negligence, but out of Need. Until birth, that child is a part of her body, to do with what she will. You do not have to advocate it, but I do hope that you will discover that it is wrong to try and prevent it. If you argue that abortion is wrong, why advocate aborting the opportunities of the woman with unwanted pregnancies?

       Logos,

           Kinsley McDonald
