Goodbye LYTRO! Google is reportedly buying the light-field camera startup for cheap!

Goodbye LYTRO! Google is reportedly buying the light-field camera startup for cheap!  | 360-degree media | Scoop.it
Multiple sources tell TechCrunch that Google is acquiring Lytro, an imaging startup that specializes in light-field technology.
Christian Murray's insight:
Goodbye LYTRO, I have followed them since their inception back in 2011, I knew they were on a risky road, it is always hard to bring the next big thing to market when you are not even sure yourself how it should work!  They made best efforts but the investors are sad as it looks like the company will sell at a loss of over 250 million! Interesting that Google  will take it on as they themselves have a terrible  track record when it comes to acquisitions and turning them in to profitable means. Surely nothing to do with the fact that one of the Lytro board is Google's Rick Osterloh, SVP of hardware! We'll see what happens over tjhe next 18 months  as many people are attempting to finalise the R&D on light-field tech.

Christian Murray's insight:
Now, this is the way to shoot quality 360! I did a 4x RED 8k shoot using 8mm lenses in 2016 and the data was big but the quality was undeniable.  Today the need for UHR ( Ultra-High Resolution) 360 image quality is yet to be streamlined. I did try to reach out to RED a few years back, to see if we could do some new config for 360, maybe they will be the ones to conquer an efficient 360 pro system. This large array shooting is not cheap but the results are undeniable. It must have looked spectacular on the massive stadium-sized 360 screen!

Christian Murray's insight:
This is Lyfie Eye an add-on for Android and iOS phones to capture 360. It is only 1920 resolution, it has poor colour balance and Sat settings. It has stitch issues greater than Samsung. It needs all your phones memory and power. Do not waste your $120.00 pick something else!

Unicornis has launched a new 360 camera that can shoot 4K spherical video with realtime stitching and livestreaming capabilities.
Christian Murray's insight:
OK Here comes another small-lens 360 solution. This one  providing 1080p live, No example footage. Only 2 hour internal battery, app seems simple  with no exciting features, uses  sd card and though it does offer an HDMI port and  quote 100mb/s  stream. This  unit is touted for $2299.00, which is an unbelievably rich price for such limited functionality and offering. Based on what is promoted by the company so far I predict that this product will meet a short demise.

Insta360 Announces 6 DoF Lightfield rig and $12k 360 Camera at CES | 360-degree media | Scoop.it
Insta360 aims to immerse consumers deeper into the world of virtual reality with two new cameras introduced this week at CES in Las Vegas. The company known for lightweight, portable 360-degree cameras introduced its eight-lens VR camera and the 6DOF Light Field Camera, a 128-camera array.
Christian Murray's insight:
Insta 360 who started out with  a small consumer offering have announced at CES impending products. First, their version of an 8 camera 360 for "Cinematographers" At $12,000 i fear that they will go the same as others (Nokia OZO),  not addressing the core issues of real cinematographic  cameras!  Anyway we'll see what becomes of it second a a 6DOF Light Field 128 sensor array  breaking  the market open in that sector from the LYTRO pioneers. all being said at the end of the day it is  really all about the software. FITT360 - Samsungs 360° Neckband Wearable Camera

Linkflow, inc. is raising funds for FITT360 - The First 360° Neckband Wearable Camera on Kickstarter!

Unobtrusive and effortless way to capture and share your moments in 360° true First-Person-View.
Christian Murray's insight:
Samsung try Kickstarter to feel out the market for their new FITT360  neck band camera. It probably has a good place in the world of training evaluation and such but any extreme Athletics are out for this . It looks like it will cost around  $700 US  when promised release  for  Christmas 2018   However as usual a major flaw is charging you for the cradle and other small bits like a pouch to keep it in!  no actual interactive footage to be seen yet. The playback promo material certainly shows that you  could not watch it on anything over a 9" screen as it all falls away, this due to the  small lenses and tiny chips. Also what if you have long hair  or  want your hood up?

Here's a  tidy bargain for home 360. A security camera that has  geo fencing, night vision and two way comms. and comes in at  just $99.99! this is a functional unit and i am sure they will eventually have them linked up. Also cloud  storage so i am sure there will be a way to retrieve and  edit footage,  so it  could work as a meeting recorder and possible event archive unit. Nice  simple app to control. This is interesting news you will not see on any mainstream channels. The use of 360 cameras for security surveillance In China,  Qihoo 360 company started distributing 360 cameras for free to Kindergartens but they failed to institute pre-authorised approved viewing and made their feeds public. Now they have shut down and show an acceptance for privacy! The really interesting part is that the UK, well known for its abundant public surveillance camera use will seemingly no longer be the world leader in public surveillance as it is predicted that China will have one camera for every two people by 2022!

Finally! Cut Pro X introduces 360-degree VR video editing | 360-degree media | Scoop.it
Apple announces the latest update to Final Cut Pro X, with new features including VR video editing, advanced color grading tools and support for HDR.
Christian Murray's insight:
Back in the 90's Apple led the market with QTVR a robust toolset  for creating panoramas, objects and interconnected hotspots. We  forged some original 360 Video on the  QT Pro player, then in the early 2000's  Apple dropped QTVR which practically hurt a lot of people invested in it.  Now today finally they release an edit upgrade for FCP x BUT!  it ides not account for different formats such as the historical Cylindrical format Also no stitching,  they do have titles and  linear inclusions  but overall it is limited  and i hope thy can look back to the past and revive some of the original passion from the pioneer days. Sometime the past is the key to a successful future.

Don't want to drop $500 on a 360 camera? The Fishball gives the iPhone camera a 360 view with some mirrors and lenses.

3 UC Berkeley students present this 360 option for iPhone 7 and up. Harkening back to the GoPano Micro days, using a Phone camera and just reflecting an image capture of 360 onto it.
This is different in that it uses an 8 mm fisheye lens config to bounce images on to your phones chip. Promises of a $60.00 entry point and trying for indigogo campaign. With iPhone cameras becoming evermore powerful this may well be a suitable cheap unit for friends and family!

Detu has announced the F4 Plus — an 8K VR camera with 360º image, video, and live stream capture functionality... and it won't be cheap.
Christian Murray's insight:
Here comes another self contained multi-cam with the traditional 2 and 4k but now a possible 8k 7680x3690 at 30fps, however with all VR  now leading to 60fps, It will not work well in mixed media! Also only 2 hours battery and that's not replaceable  so you will have break filming to charge. Again the small lenses lead me to believe that at $2990 this is not an effective buy for professionals. Especially when no footage of the stitching quality shown. I wonder when any of these companies will come to us old pioneer guys for advice!

Samsung make a go of a prosumer  360 camera. with 17 lenses and  a price tag of $10,500 US No footage be seen yet, I wonder though if it has the guts to take on what NOKIA  OZO failed to do? What they all forget is, the lens is pretty much everything and this is just another of the units with relatively cheap lensing, such that the final command of image control is highly restricted. No footage to be seen yet or and promised release of this month in USA  other  territories later. I wonder if they will role out some decent software for editing with it?

Pano-S: 8K 360° VR Camera by PANO-S —A cheap effort for a PRO device!

PANO-S is raising funds for Pano-S: 8K 360° VR Camera on Kickstarter!

Redefine the Concept of Professional VR Photography
Christian Murray's insight:
OK, just so I can say I am not biased, From Pano -S , a smart guy in his basement, here is a poor attempt at trying to redefine the concept of professional VR Photography/ Video.
I say that given the present state of cameras and the associated software developments therein. This unit lacks on the firmware side(stitching accuracy) also is not HDR and certainly not Pro quality Imaging, In reality it is not much better than any other small-chip, small-lens array.
At the price on KickStarter for a basic being $599  but moving up to $5,000 for all the additions. You are, as a pro, better off renting a sony A7 rig!  or using anyother array on rental. If you are going into  pro -production businesss you need a lot more functionality than this offers.  Filters, aperture/focus changes manually etc.

Canon has showed us two concept cameras at The Photography Show 2018, one that is a wearable camera with 360-degree movement that’s driven by artificial intelligence to recognise interesting scenes from your daily life and take photos, and another modular-style camera.
Christian Murray's insight:
Concept Cameras are not often seen. Here's an interesting application of AI for auto frame select/ choosing best shot by auto panning lens and selecting based ion its library. No telling if it is deep-learning cloud-based or if it is actually just  Machine Learning Algorithm  based on limited parameters. You have to be careful when people throw around the term AI. I am sure we will see more of this creative AI inference within consumer cameras in the future.

Pano-No backers have to pay $1,100 extra to receive crowdfunded camera | 360-degree media | Scoop.it
Panono continues to be a shining example of everything that can go wrong with crowdfunding. After raising $1.25 million, going bankrupt, and failing to deliver its product to most backers, supporters of the campaign are now being offered a second chance to receive the 360-degree camera they already paid $500 for — by paying another $1,100 more.
Christian Murray's insight:
This is a shameful show of  what can go wrong in crowdfunding. Also a terrible camera design and  their business model is now  very similar to IPIX from the 90's  Unfortunately the folks at Bryanston probably  have  no one  who knows the pitfalls of the industry  and i guarantee that they will go bust just like IPIX with their over priced offerings!!

Yet another competitor entering the consumer 360 camera space. This one trying to fit neatly between the Insta 360 and the Go pro at $499, supported by auto subject tracking and crop software so you use 360 to grab a normal video, advantage is  stabilisation for handheld but of course with small lenses and small chips there is a sacrifice to beset the 1080p output which is really not to date and should be 1920. SO, I think that at the price they will have a hard time conquering an already oversaturated market.

This new array camera plans to tackle Samsung and possibly pick up where OZO left off. At $10K its  still a hefty tag for  a relatively simple device. on the upside it 4k per eye so compression should make it look pretty good for  the present 2k HMD.
