How the Supreme Court Responds to Public Opinion

How the Supreme Court Responds to Public Opinion | 3 bradley jordan | Scoop.it
It has been rather challenging for legal scholars to portray the Supreme Court opinions of the past few days as somehow following logically from precedent or even from the past…
3 bradley jordan's insight:

Supreme Court Justices are not elected; they are nominated by the President, and confirmed by the Senate. They don't have to worry about the opinions of constituents or partisan politics (once they are on the bench.Their terms do not run out; they serve for life or until they choose to step down (unless removed from office by impeachment and trial). They don't need to please the public in order to retain their positions. The Supreme Court receives and reads amicus curiae ("friend of the court") briefs expressing the legal opinions of individuals or groups with a special interest in a case, but no legal standing to participate officially. The Supreme Court also takes note of trends in state laws, constitutional amendments, and court decisions. While the US Supreme Court is the highest appellate Court in the nation, the justices do consider state court verdicts and the reasoning behind them.

Getting a deal on Iran’s nuclear program is more than a win for 2015, or a legacy achievement for the fourth quarter of his presidency. It’s a validation of Obama’s whole foreign policy philosophy — a theory of the world today, and America’s role in it, that he’s been mocked for since he was that first-term senator running for president, insisting that he’d already figured out a better way.the Iran negotiations have “succeeded exactly as intended,” Obama said at the White House as soon as the broad terms were released. “It is a good deal.”

The First Amendment for Dummies: The Basics of the 1st Amendment Explained - YouTube

Continuing the Constitution for Dummies Series with the Bill of Rights and Amendment One. Explained simply so you can understand the Constitution of the Unit...
3 bradley jordan's insight:

I personally believe that those granted in the First Amendment are the most important. The First Amendment protects freedom of religion, speech and the press, as well as the right to assemble and petition the government.

Freedom of religion supports the right of a person or group to practice their religion in public or private. It also includes the freedom to change their religion or not follow one at all. This is very important because nobody should ever be told how to practice his or her own religion or what religion to follow. We're all different, and we all see religion differently.

Freedom of speech is the right to communicate one's ideas verbally. There are some limits to this, though, such as libel, slander, obscenity and incitement to commit a crime. Freedom of speech is my favorite right. It lets me state my opinion and know that it's OK as long as I'm not slandering anybody.

Freedom of the press, also known as freedom of the media, is the right to express ideas through written vehicles, such as electronic media and published materials.
