This article was written in response to this initial article: http://whitmanpioneer.com/arts/2014/11/06/horror-movies-scare-with-lack-of-a-story/

Both authors make good points about the quality of certain horror films and how not everyone can be affected in the same way, by the same scares, or by scares at all. Each person has their own prefrences when it comes to entertainment, and the horror genre does not appeal to everyone. Geoffrey Leach does point out what horror films do right, and how the evolution of them through time has kept fans of the genre on the edge of their seat experiencing thrill after thrill that only those spooky movies can provide.

The Evil Within Proves There is No Such Thing as a Perfect Horror Game

The Evil Within Proves There is No Such Thing as a Perfect Horror Game | Recreational Terror | Scoop.it
The Evil Within is exactly the game horror fans have been asking for, and the game proves that survival horror is dead and buried.
Ceci Fyock's insight:

Horror Going Downhill - Dread Central

Horror Going Downhill - Dread Central | Recreational Terror | Scoop.it
After the perfectly mediocre year for theatrical horror that was 2014, it’s easy to say the genre we love is indeed floundering, but hey, we’ve had bad years before, and just like a good zombie, we always come back for… Continue Reading →
Ceci Fyock's insight:

Clever use of wordplay to criticize the quality of the horror genre in commercial releases, then to segue into talking about a new horror film itself.

Down in the comments section, a couple of other horror enthusiast share their disdain with the quality of the mass commercial releases, over shadowing some of the better done films this year that did not get the same amount of recognition. It was actually a really good year for horror films, just many were not widely shown in theaters.

Gothic Textures in Found Footage Horror Film | The Gothic Imagination

Gothic Textures in Found Footage Horror Film | The Gothic Imagination | Recreational Terror | Scoop.it
“The Gothic”, Philip Brophy once wrote, “is attracted to decay like maggots to a corpse”. Having released a book earlier this year on found footage horror film, there’s a romance to Brophy’s quote that I can’t resist applying to the spectacular deterioration of the video image in this popular subgenre. The aesthetics of digital decay are so integral to this category that they have become a key element of its visual signature.

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark to traumatize a new generation with film adaptation

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark to traumatize a new generation with film adaptation | Recreational Terror | Scoop.it
Frankenweenie scribe John August will adapt the tales of the macabre for the spooky silver screen.
Ceci Fyock's insight:

The scary stories that I grew up with are finally getting a screen adaptation from director/ screenwriter John August. While it was not mentioned how they are planning to convey these short stories on the big screen, I think live-action will be a missed opportunity. The best way they could go about accurately portraying the creepiness of these stories, is to find the original illustrator and pair him with some animators, and have them produce and animated film in that unique, spooky, artstyle. That would win spooky film of the year- no, lifetime, from me.
