Singapore a scholarship haven for foreign students?-Joey

Singapore a scholarship haven for foreign students?-Joey | 2R5 | Scoop.it

This article discusses the issue of scholarships for students from overseas such as China and India. It discusses about the cost, how it affects the local students and what people feel about it.

I think that this is an issue that may have annoyed some locals here as they feel that it is unfair to give chances to someone else, instead of a Singaporean who has the same potential to do well in his or her studies.

Good Vocab:

1)vehemently- When you do something vehemnetly, you something with enrgy and passion.

Most Japanese favour break with nuclear power: Poll

TOKYO (AP) - A new poll suggests that most Japanese favor phasing out nuclear power following last years tsunami-generated crisis.

Reflection : I feel that after the earthquake which took place last year, which caused a nuclear crisis in Japan. It is only natural for the Japanese to feel negatively towards the idea of a nuclear future for them. On one hand, although it is true that not relying on nuclear energy would reduce the chances of another similiar crisis like this. We still cannot deny the fact that nuclear energy is used to supply more than two-thirds of Japan's total energy supply and removing the usage of it could be a hard pill to swallow for many Japanese. To sum it up, there are pros and cons for the usage of nuclear energy, but still, the Japanese population should look at it from the big picture and not just give opinions leaned towards the recent events. :D

Would you be tempted by a compensation offer of S$20,000 if the guy who beat you up ran away?

Reflections :

I felt that the guy should just take the money as it is a huge amount and he could use it to treat his injuries. By taking the person on court will only waste more money and it will not be worth it.

Old-Chang-Kee's sardine puff reveals nasty surprise--Jia Xuan (9)

Old-Chang-Kee's sardine puff reveals nasty surprise--Jia Xuan (9) | 2R5 | Scoop.it

On what seems to be a regular Wednesday morning, 32-year-old Sandra, went to a Old Chang Kee outlet located at Singapore Post Centre to grab one of their signature sardine puff before heading to work. However, oblivious to her, little should she know that after her first bite, a nasty surprise would await her.

I think that this matter is serious and should be taken under consideration by not only the management of Old Chang Kee but also the NEA. Old Chang Kee has a lot of outlets in Singapore, making it one of Singapore’s snack chains. Although the management of Old Chang Kee has apologized, in my opinion, it is not enough. The manager of the outlet should have been responsible, making sure that the area is hygienic with no pests around. Furthermore, it was stated in the article that the staff were rude. There are a lot of Old Chang Kee lovers out there, and should they hear the news, what would they think? After hearing the news, I think that most people would have lost their trust in the hygiene of the food sold. Food hygiene and customer service are important, so Old Chang Kee need to strengthen their processes in both areas, for trust is something they have to earn back.

Vocabulary:
1.Beleaguered- surrounded with troubles
2.Explicit- fully and clearly expressed or demonstrated

Ballot papers for presidential polls to be destroyed-Zu Yu

Ballot papers for presidential polls to be destroyed-Zu Yu | 2R5 | Scoop.it

This news is about the ballot papers from last August's presidential election and other documents used in the islandwide poll will be destroyed on Saturday. The ballot paper will be send to the Tuas South Incineration Plant to be burned. There is nearly 2.16 ballot paper to be burned.

Under the Presidential Elections Act, these ballot papers and other documents used in the election must be sealed and kept in safe custody for six months. After that, they must be destroyed unless otherwise directed by the president. This is to ensure the secrecy of the vote.

I think this process helps to ensure that no information about the votes casted by the citizens became known to others. By doing so, people will gain trust from the governments as it was a usual procedure to burn the ballot papers. Besides this, the four candidates and their election agents will be there to witnessed the procedure.

Budget Terminal to make way for Terminal 4-Joey

Budget Terminal to make way for Terminal 4-Joey | 2R5 | Scoop.it

This article is about the Budget Terminal being replaced by a newer and better Terminal 4. The Budget Terminal can hold a capacity of 7 million passengers while the new Terminal 4 will be able to hold up to 16 million passengers per annum. Airlines operating at the Budget terminal will move to Terminal 2 from 6am on 25 September, which is also the date when the Budget Terminal will be demolished. Terminal 4 will begin construction in 2013 and will be finished in 2017. The new terminal is built to cater growing air traffic and passenger capacity.

I feel that this will be good as the airport will not be too squeesy to park airplanes due to growing air traffic. Changi airport serves many, many, many airlines and a lot of flights are coming and leaving Singapore every minute, hence larger space will definitely be needed just to cater to that. Also, inside an airplane, there'll definitely be passengers. The new terminal will help with passenger processing efficiency so, passengers will not have to wait too long . This new Terminal 4 gives allows more space for more airplanes, as well as, passengers. However, on my mind, I'm wondering where they'll shift the Budget Terminal to?

Good Vocabulary:

1) Amenities: Things that make you comfortable and at ease.
2) Aerobridges: A telescoping corridor that extends from an airport terminal to an aircraft, for the boarding and disembarkation of passengers.

Mayan Light Beam Photo: Message from Gods, or iPhone Glitch?

Mayan Light Beam Photo: Message from Gods, or iPhone Glitch? | 2R5 | Scoop.it

The article is about a person called Hector Siliezar visiting ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza together with his wife and kids. He snapped three iPhone pictures of El Castillo, a pyramid that once served as a sacred temple to the Mayan god Kukulkan. One of the pictures captured an image of a beam of light shooting from the temple to the skies that was only reflected in the picture.

I think that it is phenomenal that someone took a picture of a light beam shooting up from the temple to the heavens as it is not something you see everyday. Some people on the Internet thinks it is a message from the gods about the impending doomsday on 21 December 2012. I think we should not really believe these paranormal happenings and take it as a pinch of salt. Imagine spending all your money before the end of the world with your credit card. When the end of the world did not come, think of all the credit card debts you would get!

Vocab:

1)isolated

-far away from everyone or everything else

2)occult

-Dark and mysterious,a kind of supernatural power or magic.

Foreign domestic workers to get mandatory weekly off day - Jing Han

Foreign domestic workers to get mandatory weekly off day - Jing Han | 2R5 | Scoop.it

"Foreign domestic workers (FDW) will now enjoy at least one rest day every week, under a new law announced in Parliament on Monday."

Foreign doemestic workers (FDWs) in Singapore will now enjoy at least one day of every week. The new ruling will require a weekly rest day for FDWs, while providing employers the flexibility to compensate their FDWs with extra pay should the worker agrees to work on their rest day.

I feel that this is a right thing to do. The domestic workers made a choice to come to our country to do hard labour. They do not even complain about the tough work. What satisfies them is the salary they get as they can send it back to their hometown. Domestic workers has helped Singapore in constructing many buildings which are important in the society. Getting a day off weekly must be making them feel happy. We must not take their contributions for granted, afterall, they are one of the most important people in Singapore.

Family of 10 killed in train-minivan collision in Indonesia- Luann

Family of 10 killed in train-minivan collision in Indonesia- Luann | 2R5 | Scoop.it
JAKARTA (AFP) - At least 10 members of one Indonesian family were killed on Sunday, as their minivan spun out of control after colliding with a moving train and flipped over in a nearby rice field. The minivan packed with 14 people was passing through a railway crossing in Tasikmalaya city in West Java province, unaware of an oncoming train that slammed into it, police said.

'The minivan was dragged over five to six metres and then rolled over into a rice field,' Tasikmalaya city police official Suherman told AFP.

'Seven people died on the spot, three died in hospital, while four others were in critical condition. They had injuries all over their bodies and the chances of survival are slim.' Deadly accidents are common at Indonesia's poorly maintained level crossings, many of which are unmanned and unequipped with barriers.

Reflection:I felt very doeful for the 14 people. As the article says these accidents are common at Indonesia's poorly maintained level crossings, so shouldn't they try to fix it to decrease or at least lessen these deadly accidents. Nobody wanted this to happen nobody expected this to happen. Imagine if these 14 people were your family what will you want to do or what will you feel?

NS men to get pay raise in April - Ruanqian

This article is about National servicemen in the Singapore Armed Forces, Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defence Force can look forward to a $60 pay raise across all ranks from next month.

"The increase in NS rank allowance reaffirms the key role that National Servicemen play in safeguarding the sovereignty and security of Singapore as we mark 45 years of NS this year," said the Ministry of Defence.

I think this is the right thing to do as the price of the foods and entertainments nowadays has all gone up, an increase in salary is definitely needed or it will be unfair for the National Servicemen as they are the ones who is protecting our country.

What sank the Titanic? Scientists point to the moon -Ashley

What sank the Titanic? Scientists point to the moon -Ashley | 2R5 | Scoop.it

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - A century after the Titanic disaster, scientists have found an unexpected culprit of the crash: the moon.

A hundred years after the magnificent vessel ' R.M.S Titanic' sank thousands of feet down under the ocean, scientists now know the culprit behind the awful event that struck on the 15th of April, 1912. The seemingly unexpected reason behind the sinking is indeed, the moon.
For a century we have assumed that the icebergs were the only obstacles that took her down, but little did they know that lunar activity too affected their movements .

I feel quite amazed that even after such a long period of time, scientists were able to make such a remarkable deduction. Although I feel sad that the people who went down along with the ship are no longer here, Im sure that if they were still alive somehow, they would have wanted to know the true cause behind the sinking. I sincerely hope that the scientists working on this case will be able to find more detailed and interesting proof about the real reason behind the end of her reign as the biggest passenger liner during her time. If the moon is really behind her sinking, I would feel that we should be extra careful when we are out at sea, especially if lunar activity is high.

I like how the writer/reporter is very creative in forming his news article title. Also, he has provided specific dates and timings for the unfortunate yet important event. This shows that the writer has put in ample effort in constructing this news report and too is interested in 'Titanic's" life story. Also, he did put in much effort in doing research about the Greenland Icebergs!

Disloged - Remove from an established or fixed position

Singapore restricts use of trans fats in food-Tarmizi

Singapore restricts use of trans fats in food-Tarmizi | 2R5 | Scoop.it

This article is about Singapore's government trying to lessen the intake of trans-fat of Singaporean Citizens. The government has created a new law that limits the use of trans-fat in restaurants and manufactured food products in Singapore. In addition to that, it is compulsory to label the trans fatty acids level of food products. It may make it harder for me to gain weight but it is for a good cause. The limit is, only two grams per 100 grams of trans-fat is allowed for a food product. The industry will be given until May 2013 to implement these changes when the law is enforced.

I feel that the new law will help to prevent heart diseases, clot of arteries and many more health related problems. People might say that the cutting down of trans-fat seems unnecessary. Well, this is quite true because the labelling might help us to be cautious of the intake of trans fatty acids. However, they will be some people who will not take wary of the labels. Also, if people avoided the product with more trans-fat the company will have a huge loss. Therefore, the first law that  has been implemented will help to reduce the trans-fat of the company product and will help to keep the company going smoothly.

In South Asia, India worst place to be born in

In South Asia, India worst place to be born in | 2R5 | Scoop.it

India may well be the world's fastest growing "free market"economy, but it is no competition to its neighbours when it comes to the social wellbeing of her people. - LIMJET (31)

Among South Asian countries India is probably the worst place to be born in, as the chances of survival till the age of five are much weaker than the chances in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and China. Yet again, we are better off than Pakistan, albeit slightly. The revelation is not too surprising when 28 per cent of children in India are born underweight.

I feel that this shows how the cities in India have failed to nurture its poor children, the report shatters the common perception that the urban poor are better off than their counterparts in rural areas. The government should implement a one child per parent rule as this will help the government to have more money left to improve medical facilities.
