Civil Liberties & Bill of Rights - YouTube

Civil Liberties & Bill of Rights
2nd Lukas Andre's insight:

UNIT 8

Civil liberties and the Bill of Rights habitually go hand-in-hand. Civil liberties are the rights given to the people without racial discrimination. One might not have the right to get promoted but they do have the right to be free from being declined the job if they are a different race. It's illegal to be denied rights because of race.

1964 Civil Rights Act Fast Facts

1964 Civil Rights Act Fast Facts | 2 André, Lukas | Scoop.it
Here is a look at the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Its signing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 is considered the nation's most important civil rights legislation since Reconstruction (1865-1877) as it prohibited discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. Following that law, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed landmark civil rights bills including the 1965 Voting Rights Act and the 1968 Fair Housing Act.
2nd Lukas Andre's insight:

UNIT 8

Civil liberties are personal guarantees and freedoms that the government cannot change either by law or by judicial interpretation. The civil rights basically revolve around the right to be treated fairly regardless of distinct characteristics. Civil liberties are the rights given.

How the Supreme Court Responds to Public Opinion

How the Supreme Court Responds to Public Opinion | 2 André, Lukas | Scoop.it
It has been rather challenging for legal scholars to portray the Supreme Court opinions of the past few days as somehow following logically from precedent or even from the past…
2nd Lukas Andre's insight:

UNIT 7

There are a couple ways the supreme court can be protected from public opinion: The Supreme Court Justices aren't elected; they are nominated by the President so they don't have to worry about the opinions of the partisan politics. Another way is that because they are set for life then they don't have to please the public in order to retain their positions.

Supreme%20Court%20Procedure%20_%20Cases.pdf

2nd Lukas Andre's insight:

UNIT 7

The jurisdiction of the Supreme Court means that they have to power to overview, revise or overturn court cases. Justices can pick and choose cases (8,000 petitions per year). A court decides on cases by two ways: Appeal and appellate jurisdiction. The majority comes from appeals. A case must have a merit of the case which are constitutional questions or a disagreement between other state/federal courts. They must also have a petition for a "writ of ceritorari" which is a request for info from the lower courts.

Who Is Running for President (and Who’s Not)?

Who Is Running for President (and Who’s Not)? | 2 André, Lukas | Scoop.it
At least a dozen Republicans and a handful of Democrats have expressed an interest in running for their party’s 2016 presidential nomination.
2nd Lukas Andre's insight:

UNIT 6

With the 2016 election coming up people are wondering who is actually running. There's a lot of controversy of Hilary Clinton running for president which would make her the first woman president ever. But according to this website she's not 100% running. She's titled to probably run. Frankly there are no sure candidates for the democrat side. For the republican side Ted Cruz is definitely running with other maybes and maybe nots. And which also surprised me is the fact that Mitt Romney isn't running after his failed attempt to claim the title in 2012.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency is headed by Administrator Gina McCarthy. This agency's mission is to protect human health and the environment. The reason I think they are independent is because human health and the environment is such a broad subject and can cause so much time just to fix one issue. They're independent so that the work load doesn't fall directly on the President and the Congress. One news story is that "Brownfield to Help Revitalize Philadelphia's North Kensington Area"

Abraham Lincoln has been ranked the best President ever two surveys taken over a fair time period twice in a row. Supreme Court lightens load for pregnant employees | 2 André, Lukas | Scoop.it
The Supreme Court made it easier Wednesday for women to sue their employers for failing to accommodate a pregnancy. This article is about how the Supreme Court just made it easier for women to sue them for failing to accommodate a pregnancy. This woman Peggy Young sued the Court under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 after they denied "light duty" when she became pregnant. It's a big step forward towards enforcing the principle that a woman shouldn't have to choose between her pregnancy and her job.

Thomas Confirmation Hearings Had Ripple Effect

Today's Supreme Court confirmation process was shaped by what happened at the hearings for Clarence Thomas 20 years ago. The hearings also changed America's political, judicial and cultural landscape.
2nd Lukas Andre's insight:

UNIT 7

The Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas is a justice of prophetic vision who is not a traditional conservative but also the second African-American appointed to the court. These characteristics makes his contributions to the court more  appealing than the average justice. The interest group found that African Americans and some liberals would find it hard to attack an African American nominee for Thurgood Marshall's seat. They would also anticipate the way particular nominees would undermine the ability of liberals to mobilize.

Presidential job approval ratings from Ike to Obama

Presidential job approval ratings from Ike to Obama | 2 André, Lukas | Scoop.it
Perhaps no measure better captures the public’s sentiment toward the president than job approval. It dates back to the earliest days of public opinion polling, when George Gallup asked about Franklin D. Roosevelt starting in the 1930s.
2nd Lukas Andre's insight:

UNIT 6

In this article it explains that the President's approval rating between parties mainly depends on which party e belongs to and the rate of job approval. Apparently, President Obama approves just enough to be placed right between former President Bush and Clinton on par wit Ronald Reagan. Obama's presidential approval rate is 47%.There's also the correlation between approval ratings' highs and lows and national incidents. Based on this article the former presidents had an all time high and then a national catastrophe occurred lowering their ratings.

I learned that the President has to hold a press conference for every issue big or small. I also learned that if there is an issue with two or more conflicts once he gives the thumbs down on one it doesn't matter about the other issue, its completely vetoed.
