What I Wish I Knew About Creativity When I Was 20

What I Wish I Knew About Creativity When I Was 20 | 2Discover Diversity and Inclusion | Scoop.it

Imagine you could go back in time and give your 20-year-old self a bit of advice on investing in the creative process, coming up with new ideas, and producing good, fun work.

What would you say?

I’ve thought a bit about this topic lately, as I reflect on how I’ve changed from the person I was in my twenties to the person I’ve become in my thirties. Creativity has become more and more important to me, both at work and at play. And the lessons I’ve learned along the way (and the ones I’m still learning) seem like something 20-year-old me would have liked to know.

How To Trick Your Brain To Hold On To Positive Habit Changes

How To Trick Your Brain To Hold On To Positive Habit Changes | 2Discover Diversity and Inclusion | Scoop.it

Nearly half of our everyday behaviors tend to be repeated in the same location almost every day, according to research out of Duke University. That means most of the time we are running on autopilot.

On average, a habit takes more like 66 days to form, with more intensive habits like doing 50 sit-ups every morning taking around 84 days to form, according to research out of University College of London that Dean references in his book. But these figures will often vary greatly from person to person.

Forming habits that stick isn't about finding a magic number. It's about being aware of your behaviors and environment and their effects on your brain. Here are some steps to get started:

Brian Jones's curator insight, September 30, 2014 8:46 PM

Appreciative Inquiry focuses on the positive in solution seeking scenarios by progressing through four steps: 1. Discover - "What is" 2. Dream - "What might be" 3. Design - "What should be" 4. Destiny - "What will be" This format allows the mentor to direct the conversation with the mentee to solve concerns, challenges, problems from a positive point of view. This growth mindset keeps the dialogue out of blaming and complaining. Perhaps if a mentor coach focuses the mentee's attention on "what might be", the entire discussion is set in a positive future state. Brain research highlights the fact the emotional memory is timeless and can't distinguish between reality and perceptions. Therefore, if a mentee is designing their future behaviour in successes, the the next step is to live into those successes.

Five Trends Shaping the Future of Work

Five Trends Shaping the Future of Work | 2Discover Diversity and Inclusion | Scoop.it

If there’s one thing that we can all agree on it’s that the world of work is changing…quickly. The way we have been working over the past few years is NOT how are we are going to be working in the coming years. Perhaps one of the most important underlying factors driving this change is the coming shift around who drives how work gets done. Traditionally executives would set the rules and pass those down to managers who in turn would pass those down to employees. But as Dan Pink aptly put it, “talented people need organizations less than organizations need talented people.” In other words employees are now starting to drive the decisions and conversations around how work gets done, when it gets done, who it gets done with, what technologies are being used to get it done, etc. The next few years are going to bring about dramatic changes. But why now? What are the key trends that are driving this new future of work? There are five of them - take a look.

The Future of Work

Ian Berry's curator insight, September 10, 2014 5:39 PM

I agree with the trends One is missing for me The rehumanisation of the workplace. The future is not about technology rather why and how we use it to bring humanity back to the workplace or in some cases put humanity into the workplace

Michael Thiel's curator insight, September 11, 2014 6:53 AM

How to Break The Procrastination Doom Loop

Daniel Watson's curator insight, August 28, 2014 11:06 PM

One of the worst enemies of productivity is procrastination, and any self-employed business owner with tendencies towards procrastination, needs to be particularly mindful of the price that can be paid for procrastination.

Recent studies have found that procrastination happens because people delay action because they feel like they are in the wrong mood to complete a task, and then they assume that their mood will change in the near future and that the work that needs to be done will then get done.

This excellent article, suggest that time is not the issue and emotions are what leads to procrastination, and it offers good suggestions to avoid getting into a never ending procrastination loop.
