We continue to use technology to reinforce 19th century teaching practice' | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it

why [has] technology, to date, had very little impact on improved learning outcomes? This could be because we continue to use technology to reinforce 19th century teaching practice to meet out-dated assessment models. Most of the world’s curriculum and assessment systems are based around fact recall rather than actually demonstrating that you have learned something and can deploy it within a problem-solving situation.

"Another Brick In The Wall" - Pink Flloyd

ThePlanetaryArchives/San Francisco CA's curator insight, November 17, 2013 3:12 PM

Our  education system is nothing more than child-care with some

indoctrination thown in.

See/hear "The Wall" by Pink Floyd  (40+ years ago.)

Let the children play until they are old enough to decide what they are interested in learning. That's completely different than training them from Day 1 to "sit still, be quiet, and obey authority." Training a 5-year old to become a "worker" or 'Businessman"  is not education, but it may be child abuse.

Going SOLO: An introduction to the taxonomy everyone’s talking about

Going SOLO: An introduction to the taxonomy everyone’s talking about | 21st Century Literacy and Learning | Scoop.it

The Structure of Observed Learning Outcome (SOLO) taxonomy aims to show pupils how to develop sophisticated responses to questions by getting them to examine their thought-process as their understanding of a topic improves. I began using SOLO in 2011, and it is now integral to my teaching.

SOLO defines five stages of understanding for any topic: prestructural, unistructural, multistructural, relational and extended abstract. The first three involve gathering relevant information. The other two are about using that information: linking facts and findings, questioning existing ideas about the topic, and forming new theories.

Ariana Amorim's curator insight, August 26, 2013 6:29 AM

"Here are some research-based suggestions for school leaders on how to start cultivating a positive school climate:

1) Assess the current climate.

2) Create a shared vision—but start with personal visions.

3) Work together to carry out the shared vision—and make it fun!"

I think these are also good tips  to create a positive work climate in organizations. A positive work climate it's the real key to Organizational Success.
