Let's Stop Confusing Cooperation and Teamwork with Collaboration

Let's Stop Confusing Cooperation and Teamwork with Collaboration | 21st Century Technology Skills | Scoop.it
Using collaboration, cooperation and teamwork interchangeably dilutes their meaning and diminishes the potential to create powerful, collaborative environments.

When is Collaboration Important?

In a network environment, where there is not interdependence, collaboration is not essential to the creative process. Through cooperative sharing of information and resources, creativity emerges through individuals and is hopefully recognized and supported.

However in an interdependent organization, collaboration is the bedrock of creative solutions and innovation.

If Yahoo is to reinvent itself, collaboration will be essential.

Innovation: Five Keys to Educating the Next Generation of Leaders

Innovation: Five Keys to Educating the Next Generation of Leaders | 21st Century Technology Skills | Scoop.it
Teaching leadership and innovation is critical to our society's future. We could do better.

Educating students to become innovative leaders is not yet a science, and is inherently a messy enterprise.  It is not likely to occur in the safe, predictable, ordered and linear world we tend to put students in.  In a sense all of this can be summarized as the need to teach students to dare, to experiment and to fail with joy.  Perhaps John Stuart Mill said everything that needed to be said about innovation and leadership in this short sentence:  “That so few now dare to be eccentric marks the chief danger of our time.”

1 in 4 SMB Websites Won’t Turn Up in Online Searches | 21st Century Technology Skills | Scoop.it

26.4% of SMBs cannot be found in online searches because their websites earn a Google Page Rank of zero or have no Google Page Rank, finds vSplash in an audit of 3.9 million US SMB websites. The audit unearthed a series of deficiencies...A separate study recently issued by Constant Contact found other discoverability issues with small businesses: half admitted never updating their online listings, and the same proportion had seen inaccurate listings. Meanwhile, other deficiencies cited by the vSplash study include:
- 94.5% of SMB websites not being mobile optimized.
- 94.6% lacking a Twitter widget on their home page, and 91.2% without a Facebook widget.
- 93.7% without a contact email address on the home page.
- 49.4% without a phone number on the home page.

Your website is your small business storefront online. Maintain it properly so that online customers can find you. And when they find you, they are persuaded to do business with you.

Good content coming in a juicy package. Further reference is made to his and Robin Skinner's books 'Families and how to survive them' and in this context especially: 'Life and how to survice it', a systemic approach to the dynamics of groups, including organisations. But in dialogue form. I strongly recommend it for your bed table. A good night's sleep assured!

Embracing feedback

Embracing feedback | 21st Century Technology Skills | Scoop.it
I am a somewhat timid soul when it comes to learning things that I would consider negative (or distressing) about myself through the eyes of others. I know,

Don Dea's curator insight, March 21, 2013 11:58 PM

Is there truth in this? We can choose our response to learning about our failings. I like the question about “truth” because it allows me to think a little deeper about what truth is in this instance and it leads into the next big question.

Does it matter that someone else sees this darkness in me? Why does it matter? Another way to choose how you’ll respond (or not) to what you’ve heard is to consider whether it matters to you and others. I like to think that most of the time my less-than-ideal behaviors matter to me because they might not uphold my own values. But they might also matter because I’ve inadvertently hurt someone else.

Am I willing to take responsibility for any of this? This is the question that will move you forward to act on what you’ve you heard – or not. If you’re still not sure whether you want to take action, circle back to the question above. If you decide you’re not going to take responsibility then don’t be surprised when this feedback rears its head again later.
