A community of practice is more than a website | opensource.com

A community of practice is more than a website | opensource.com | 21st Century Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it

"A community of practice (CoP) is, according to cognitive anthropologists Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger, a group of people who share an interest, a craft, and/or a profession.

Over the last year or so, the term communities of practice has entered the social media buzzword lexicon along with virtual collaboration, engagement, platforms, and Enterprise 2.0. Senior leaders want to establish them, new employees are being told to join them, and middle managers are being told to support them, but what, exactly are they?" Steve Radick

Technology vs. learning? They’re not enemies. | MindShift

Technology vs. learning? They’re not enemies. | MindShift | 21st Century Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it

Yesterday’s New York Times’ article “Growing Up Digital, Wired for Distraction” by Matt Richtel brings up a long list of important ideas about how technology is changing the way students learn. Richtel touches on everything from how are brains our wired, to our cultural struggle with taming technology, to the balance of power between educator and learner.

From the perspective of another journalist covering these very subjects, it’s rich fodder for discussion. Here’s my take on some of these issues.

The 21st Century Teacher | 21st Century Teaching & Learning | Scoop.it
A free online community devoted solely to education in the 21st Century. Communicate, Collaborate, Network, Share and Learn. We have so much to talk about.

An excerpt from Sir Ken Robinson's talk, "Changing Education Paradigms."

"...The problem is they are trying to meet the future by doing what they did in the past. And on the way they are alienating millions of kids who don't see any purpose in going to school. When we went to school we were kept there with the story, which is if you worked hard and did well and got a college degree you'd have a job.

Our kids don't believe that and they are right not to..."
