Getting Started with our K-12 Digital Citizenship Curriculum

Getting Started with our K-12 Digital Citizenship Curriculum | Future Focus Learning in Australian School Libraries | Scoop.it

“We know that we offer a lot of content at CommonsSense and it can be overwhelming!

Unfortunately, there’s not a simple answer to the best way to get started,  since every school environment is different. Every school approaches teaching these subjects from a different angle, sets aside different amounts of time, and puts it in the hands of different teachers.

But there are some simple steps you can take to ensure greater success. We’re working on a more formal implementation guide, but read on for these tips and a suggested K-12 scope and sequence of our lessons."

Social Media Guidelines

Social Media Guidelines | Future Focus Learning in Australian School Libraries | Scoop.it
More and more, social media is becoming a part of our daily lives. Just today, Mashable is out with a report that says Pintrest (which is less than a year old) is the #3 social network in the U.S. This report mentions that the amount of monthly traffic Facebook receives is seven billion page views, and Twitter receives 182. Again, these are just U.S. statistics. If we were to look at the numbers worldwide, I would guess they would be much, much higher.

But it isn't just adults who are moving more of their lives to online spaces. In a recent Pew Internet survey, 73 percent of all teens used social networks daily. The most popular of these is Facebook; however, Twitter, Myspace and even LinkedIn are not far behind.

And it isn't just teens. The #1 social network for kids under the age of 13 is Club Penguin. It is visited more times each day than the New York Times..

Why Digital Citizenship? Why Now? | Internet Safety

Why Digital Citizenship? Why Now? | Internet Safety | Future Focus Learning in Australian School Libraries | Scoop.it

The new media landscape is changing very quickly. Both the number of new tools and the ways digital technologies are becoming part our lives are growing at an incredible pace. Many of us feel like we can’t keep up.

... And in Wilmington, North Carolina, school librarian Jennifer LaGarde says she’s working with her students and staff to move beyond conversations about protecting students from the evils of social media and into conversations with about how to help kids “develop a safe and responsible online presence.”
