iPads can’t improve learning without good teaching Pt 2 – Writing

iPads can’t improve learning without good teaching Pt 2 – Writing | 21st century learning and education | Scoop.it

"20 years of computers as a publishing tool has not necessarily improved the standard of students’ writing skills. The key words in that last sentence are of course publishing and writing. For too long we have seen the computer purely as a publishing tool. For me, the computer is far more effective as a writing tool."

Literacy Journal: Only 1 iPad in the Classroom?

Literacy Journal: Only 1 iPad in the Classroom? | 21st century learning and education | Scoop.it

Is only one iPad in a classroom worth it? This question keeps reappearing on the EC Ning and in other blog spaces.

The answer is easy: YES, especially if the teacher has access to a Mac desktop or (preferably) laptop and a wifi network in the classroom. It is an even larger YES if the Mac device has the most current operating system. Having a computer to which the iPad can sync is not absolutely necessary, but it is a Best Idea. If you are not feeling confident, get your IT person or another teacher to help you out with setup. I am focused here on apps to install for MS and HS - and then what to do with them ...

Children’s publisher Scholastic developing app for e-reading

Children’s publisher Scholastic developing app for e-reading | 21st century learning and education | Scoop.it

A leading publisher of children’s books is taking a big step into the electronic market. Scholastic Inc. is developing an app called Storia, which includes around 1,300 e-books and multimedia e-books that can be bought directly from the publisher or from retailers.

Such favorite picture series as “Clifford the Big Red Dog” and “Ready, Freddy!” will be in digital format for the first time. The app also will feature games, quizzes, interactive stories, an e-dictionary and a virtual book shelf that kids can organize. Scholastic Media president Deborah Forte says the idea is to make e-books “more accessible and more relevant.”

A beta version will become available Tuesday for teachers and families who buy through the Scholastic Book Clubs and other Scholastic sales channels. Storia is expected to launch for the general public in the fall, when it should have more than 2,000 books ...
