Top Ten Ways to Turn Your Classroom into a Hotbed of ENTHUSIASTIC READERS

Top Ten Ways to Turn Your Classroom into a Hotbed of ENTHUSIASTIC READERS | 21st Century TESOL Resources | Scoop.it
We are intermediate grade teachers who have learned over the years that there are practices that get kids excited about reading.   We tried to rank them but decided they were all equally important....
Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.'s insight:

Reading in the target langauge is so important for learners of all ages. Promting a literacy behavior within Southeast Asia is one of the hardest changes any ELL teacher will face. I have added two more ideas to the list.

I developed many approaches for this change to occur.

Teaching English was one aspect  but collaboration with other specialty teachers especially STEM based teachers with the reading assignments is another way for all stakeholders to achieve this change in behavior.

An additional program that I developed was the "Swenson's Sweet Read" The top three students who read and summarized the most books each semester recieved a gift certificate for a free ice cream or frozen yogurt at Swenson's. This is a very popular program at school (being in a tropical country) promoting indivdual reading. this was aprogram promoted by the library / learning center. Other rules were put in place to create different winners each time. It take three weeks to change a behavior so reading at all levels started to slowly change.

This is a great infographic for showing the thought process of finding information.

Terry Yelmene's curator insight, August 16, 2015 11:50 AM

A pretty well-reasoned, fundamental thought process for most knowledge work research.  This serves as an even better backward (there-to-here) model to guide the core research workflow process automation  a knowledge worker may want to devise, install.  Think work product-informed -> DevonThink structures -> DevonAgent w/'Active Filtered' automated searches.  The most important drivers here are - 'ethical' - (more than just multiple sources, a stage needs to be added at the work product stage to provide authenticity) and - 'bias' -  (a post automated search,  subsequent manual search for corroborating items selection to provide authority).

At 155 slides, there's probably more than you'll ever need to know about TBLT - definitions, theory (Long, Pica), implementations (Norris, Van den Branden), criticisms, (Littlewood, Swan), modifications and new rationales (holistic learning, as a response to Abbott or Medgyes's notion of TENOR).  Really great overview with detailed analysis and references.

Hillsboro Migrant Summer School brings in Mexican teachers for culture lessons | 21st Century TESOL Resources | Scoop.it

Osorio Pacheco was one of three elementary teachers from Mexico brought to theHillsboro School District in June under a federal migrant education program. The teachers integrated lessons of culture into the Migrant Summer School's regular curriculum focus of reading, writing and math.

The Bi-national Migrant Education Teacher Exchange Program is part of an initiative that started in 1976 to help migrant students in California. The departments of education in Mexico and the United States have since partnered to improve schooling for children who travel frequently between the two countries.

University libraries look to reduce licensing costs | Inside Higher Ed

University libraries look to reduce licensing costs | Inside Higher Ed | 21st Century TESOL Resources | Scoop.it

College students likely spend hundreds of thousands of dollars extra per year on buying rights for digital versions of readings to which they have free access.

Some college and university libraries have been attempting to rein in the duplicative charges, which stem from journal articles and other assigned readings that students are told to buy for class even though the material is freely available to them through library holdings.

Dr. Meryl, It is a Asin sociocultural learning behavior and strategy. I have tried to adjust the perspective in Asia but realize that this is beyond any one teacher can do...That is why now I focus on Problem-based learning strategies with real world applications. It requires creative, analytic and innovation. The very elements the learners are missing.

TBL and PBL: Two learner-centred approaches with English language learning

TBL and PBL: Two learner-centred approaches with English language learning | 21st Century TESOL Resources | Scoop.it

The language presented and practiced does not take into account the particular needs of each learner; the language content is almost always dictated by the coursebook and/or syllabus. For this reason, many teachers, having experimented with the PPP approach turn to more learner-centred approaches where the needs of the learner are central to the lesson content. Two such approaches are TBL (Task-Based Learning) and PBL (Project-Based Learning).

Rob Hatfield, M.Ed.'s insight:

I use both methods to focus on real world learning applications.
