The Class Struggle

If you are a 21st century educator and you are not an#edchat follower, you should really stay in more. Three years ago when the Twitter discussion group began, founders Tom Whitby, Steven Anderson, and Shell Terrell thought it would just be a casual chatroom for educators. It has since become the go-to barometer for education issues on the net.

Common Core Standards Business

Common Core Standards Business | 21st century education | Scoop.it

I can’t be sure why, but in the last couple months most of the responses I’ve received to posts on this blog have addressed the issue of business’ involvement in public education. I’m honestly surprised at how impassioned (read: angry) almost anyone with something to say on this subject is, regardless of their stance. A couple of regular commenters in particular are totally convinced that big business is about to take over schools, and that the Common Core Standards are the Trojan horse that greedy-eyed monopoly men everywhere will ride in on.  Common Core Standards.

What Will The Ed Tech Revolution Look Like?

What Will The Ed Tech Revolution Look Like? | 21st century education | Scoop.it

During the past 40 years, accounting for inflation, we have nearly tripled the amount of money we spend per student in public K-12 education. It was roughly $4,000 in 1971, and last year amounted to $11,000 per student. Over that same period time, our students’ math and verbal test scores have remained unchanged. I am no Warren Buffett, but I can comfortably say to you that that is a lousy return on investment.  Co. Exist. Co.Create article on changes coming to the school system.

Flipping The Classroom… A Goldmine of Research and Resources

Flipping The Classroom… A Goldmine of Research and Resources | 21st century education | Scoop.it
Many educators are beginning to become aware of the growing teaching method referred to as “Flipping The Classroom”. Simply put… the teacher provides videos for homework, while traditional home work is done in class under teacher supervision. Unfortunately this might be just too simplistic of a definition. Possible this is why using the words “simply put” may not be the best practice in explaining anything. 21 century educational learning and technology.

The Missing Piece: The Learner - Moving to a Learner-Centered Environment

The Missing Piece: The Learner - Moving to a Learner-Centered Environment | 21st century education | Scoop.it

Over the last decade conversations have been about analyzing the data to improve test scores.  The time has come to change the conversation to "The Learner" who has been the missing piece.  Once we understand the learner and how they learn, then transformation of our educational systems can begin.

The learner needs to be part of the daily conversations from now on:  no longer The Missing Piece.

Questions to consider when moving to a learner-centered environment:

> Who are the learners today?
> How do learners learn best?
> How do we meet the needs of the diverse learners in the classroom?
> What is the new role of the teacher?
> How is the role of the learner changing?
> Why is there a culture shift with these new roles?
> How can teachers and learners be partners in lesson design?
> How will teachers prepare to be the guide and partner in learning?
> How will learners express their understanding of what they know?
> What learning environment will be created for these learners?

Share your ideas in the comments section of this page.

When you think of connected principals or educators you probably have this vision of people sitting in a classroom with their iPads and smartphones reading the latest blogs or using the newest apps with students. They sit at meetings taking notes on their tablets while other educators sit around them using paper and pens. Being a connected educator means that you stay current with technology and try to infuse it into your instructional or leadership roles.  Connected Principals.

MindShift | 21st century education | Scoop.it

When we envision a well-rounded, progressive education for our kids, we think of a vibrant environment that nurtures students’ passions, provides structure for rich and deep learning, a place where kids can get their hands on projects that are meaningful to them.

That’s the goal at Brightworks, a small, K-12 private school just starting its second year in San Francisco: to re-imagine traditional modes of education so that curiosity and creativity hold sway over standardized tests and worksheets. But in the course of creating this space for students’ interests, the school has also had to refine some of its original ideas to make room for realities like assessments and how to group students.  Mindshift.

The Global Search for Education: More From Singapore - Huffington Post

The Global Search for Education: More From Singapore - Huffington Post | 21st century education | Scoop.it

Singapore is recognized globally as a high-performing education system. Singapore students fared very well in the 2009 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). Out of 65 countries that took part in these tests, Singapore students ranked fifth in reading, second in mathematics and fourth in science. "Singapore also had the second highest proportion (12.3 percent) of students who are top performers in all three domains," according to a press release from Singapore's Ministry of Education. How do teachers motivate students in the Singapore school system? How do they level the playing field between rich and poor students? How do they handle behavioral problems? Are they obsessed with testing?

The classroom, but not as we know it: technology to revolutionise schools

The classroom, but not as we know it: technology to revolutionise schools | 21st century education | Scoop.it

IT'S the kind of futuristic technology familiar from sci-fi films, but touch screen tables, robot study buddies and 3D virtual learning environments could soon feature in the classroom.

The high-tech developments were highlighted at the International Conference of the Learning Sciences at the University of Sydney, which focused on the future of learning. The new approaches could be ''revolutionising our classes and the way children learn within five years'', Professor of Education at the university and conference co-chair, Peter Reimann, said.
