Are you looking for different nuts to consume than the usual ones like almonds, walnuts, and pistachio? These nuts also happen to require huge amounts of water which is in short supply right now in California. Fret not for there many other nut varieties and seed varieties as well that are beneficial for your health that are grown elsewhere in the U.S.

 

Health Tips:  Did you know that seeds have more protein and minerals than nuts and less saturated fat? Seeds are higher in most amino acids and some are complete proteins. Many seeds are high in zinc. Sunflower seeds, sesame seeds (think tahini), pumpkin seeds contain healthful polyunsaturated fats with vitamins and minerals such as magnesium (think healthy brain function). Pumpkin seed butter is delicious and pumpkin seeds are also rich in B vitamins. Hemp seed butter has a mild nutty flavor and hemp seeds are rich in chlorophyll, magnesium, iron, vitamins B & E. Make your own (DIY) seed butters or buy minimally processed with no added sugar, salt or other ingredients.

Are you magnesium deficient? Many people are both magnesium and chromium deficient. There are over 300 biochemical processes in your body that magnesium regulates, including bone, muscle, and nerve function. Magnesium, calcium, potassium, and vitamin K are all essential minerals for building strong bones. Research show that people who eat the most produce have greater bone densities and a lower risk of fractures. Researchers have also found that magnesium levels affect several brain chemicals thought to play key roles in migraines, and people who have migraines have lower than normal amounts of magnesium in their brain.

 

Health Tips:  Dark leafy greens are one of the best sources for magnesium. Eat Swiss chard (pictured), Spinach, Broccoli, and Mustard Greens as well as nuts, as in Almonds, Cashews ,Peanuts,  Pine, and Brazil nuts;; seeds as in Pumpkin and Sunflower; beans as in Navy and Black beans, Chickpeas, Lentils, and Split Peas; Whole grains as in Quinoa.Brown rice,, Oatmeal and Artichoke hearts. 400mg daily and take a supplement too if you're not getting enough from the foods you consume.
