WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said Monday she was not arguing that a vaccine intended to prevent cervical cancer caused mental retardation when she repeated the scientifically unfounded claim last week.

 

The Minnesota congresswoman said she was relaying what a distraught woman told her after a GOP presidential debate in Florida in which Bachmann criticized rival Rick Perry for ordering the vaccine in Texas.

MIAMI (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Wednesday questioned how Rick Perry would fix Social Security as the focus of the GOP presidential race turns to senior citizen-rich Florida this week.

 

In a likely preview of a Thursday debate in Orlando, Romney took issue with Perry’s contention in a recently published book that each of the 50 states would better handle the huge federal program.

 

“In my opinion, this does not work in any way, shape or form,” Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, said at a town hall meeting attended by about 75 people.” Romney also asserted that Perry called Social Security “unconstitutional” and added: “I believe it is constitutional. I think that’s proven and settled.”

EXETER, N.H. (AP) — Mitt Romney may be tightening his grip on New Hampshire voters, despite tremendous buzz surrounding Texas Gov. Rick Perry in the nation’s first presidential primary state and elsewhere.

 

The former Massachusetts governor now leads his nearest rival, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, by 27 points among likely New Hampshire voters, according to a Suffolk University-7News poll released Wednesday night. Perry finished far back, earning 8 percent compared with Romney’s 41 percent. Paul took 14 percent and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman received 10 percent to round out the top four finishers.
