A Split Screen Strategy: Creating the Capacity for Teachers to Innovate

Ananth Pai is a masterful educator, who runs a dynamic, student-centered classroom humming with activity — what we imagine as the best-case scenario for blended learning. Pai has created individual learning plans for each of his students, which includes time with him, with other kids, and with online games. And though his students have shown exponential growth in achievement, Pai is frustrated that his successful tactics haven’t been acknowledged or applied outside his class.

“I couldn’t be more stunned by the apathy,” he says in this video, which also documents other schools and educators’ attempts to change the traditional school paradigm

Voyant Tools: Reveal Your Texts

Voyant Tools: Reveal Your Texts | Creative Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

This is a very interesting tool for analysing text and word frequency in text. It enables you to create your own mini corpus and see how words are used in context.

Randy Rebman's curator insight, December 15, 2012 7:54 PM

This tool allows you to easily export the concordance lines into a text file. Provided the text was either online or in a text file, it also makes identifying vocabulary words in texts easier. As a corpus tool on the web, I find the option of being able to upload multiple texts into the corpus one of the benefits of the site. But this tool is still in Beta mode, so there may still be some kinks with it that need worked out.

As we have progressed, not only in our use of technology but also our understanding of effective leadership, we know that communication includes effective talking but, more importantly, listening. Being able to hear what is being said from those we serve is extremely important to how we develop our schools, and the conversation is extremely valuable. Yet, many schools and organizations use social media in the old fashion: sharing information but not having a conversation. In reality, just because you have ears doesn’t mean you are listening.

What is big, easy reading? First, you read lots of books and stories. That’s the big part. And these texts need to be right at your level. That’s the easy part. There are many different ways to talk about big, easy reading. Some people call it a “book flood.” Others call it the book-based approach.
