Google launches Applied Digital Skills

Google launches Applied Digital Skills  | Creative Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it
Need a little inspiration and seeking to add a little fun to middle, high school, college, PD or independent technology learning as this school year opens?
Google just launched Applied Digital Skills, designed to help your students succeed online and prepare for their careers.  The program includes free lesson plans and digital skills videos designed for an evolving job market. You’ll want to share these with your computer science department, your technology clubs and integrate them into your own program. If yours is a Google using or Google Classroom school, this is going to be a perfect match.

Google Released A New 3D Digital Story Telling Tool | Creative Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

"Google announced today the release of Toontastic 3D which is similar to the original Toontastic but has more awesome stuff to offer. Toontastic 3D allows kids to use their imagination and engage in creative tasks. They can construct amazing things including book and school reports, design pitches, narrate stories, create beautiful cartoons and many more. Toontastic 3D is available for free download in both iOS App Store and Google Play Store.  It also works with select Chromebooks."

A very good and engaging tool for digital storytelling. Quite simple but with a very catchy layout. Easy to use, with simple outcomes. It is a good tool for primary and lower secondary students!! Production is saved as a video in the mobile device.

Free Technology for Teachers: Google Expeditions Will Soon Be Available to iPad Users

Free Technology for Teachers: Google Expeditions Will Soon Be Available to iPad Users | Creative Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it
Last week Google released another round of updates to their Expeditions program. Expeditions is the virtual reality program that lets students experience immersive views of more than 200 places including the International Space Station, coral reefs, the Taj Mahal, and the White House.

Currently, to experience Expeditions you must have a Google Cardboard viewer and a supported Android device. According to last week's Google for Education blog post, soon you will be able to experience Expeditions on iPads. On your iPad you will be able to use full screen mode to view the Expeditions virtual field trips.

Ricard Garcia's insight:
That may be an important breakthrough, as it would be to integrate all iOS devices, not only iPads.

What’s the point of education if Google can tell us anything?

What’s the point of education if Google can tell us anything? | Creative Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it

Such debate about the place and purpose of online searching in learning and assessments is not new. But rather than thinking of ways to prevent students from cheating or plagiarising in their assessed pieces of work, maybe our obsession with the “authenticity” of their coursework or assessment is missing another important educational point.

Ricard Garcia's insight:

This is a relevant topic we cannot neglect... in fact.. it will probably drive the future in our approach to education.

DebbyBruck's comment, August 18, 2015 3:29 AM
This is so right on - thank you. Educating one's self online is empowering only if the user understands the difference between "crap collection" and that which is meaningful and useable at the time of curation. Curation only has value when we use the information in the moment as a motivator and inspiration to carry on in bettering ourselves in the here and now. This is my idea of content curation and educating on what speaks to our hearts in the very NOW moment.
DebbyBruck's curator insight, August 18, 2015 4:23 AM

Online searching/learning has a definite and substantial impact in our world today. Just remember to use regularly what you are saving (or curating), and to balance it all with real world experience.  Visit your elders, your neighbors, your parents, your community, your friends (and listen to their stories): in many cases they were alive many decades before you were.  They saw wars, political changes, social movements, etc., that can never be described in the same way online than from first hand experience.  Honor these people by your presence AND learn all you can online. Temper all of it by having one foot in the world of FREE information and one foot in the world of first-hand contact with those who lived those times. The cool thing about attending a school (in person) is you get the best of both worlds - interaction with others and your time online.

Reshmi_Insomreadniac's curator insight, September 16, 2015 9:04 AM

//In an era of informational abundance, educational end-products – the exam or piece of coursework – need to become less about a single student creating an “authentic” text, and more about a certain kind of digital literacy which harnesses the wisdom of the network of information that is available at the click of a button.//

Halloween Magnetic Poetry with Google Drawings!

Halloween Magnetic Poetry with Google Drawings! | Creative Tools... and ESL | Scoop.it
Who's ready for a little Halloween fun with Google Drawings? I've created a Halloween-themed magnetic poetry template with Google Drawings for you and your students. There are nearly 100 words in this one, so adapt the words that are appropriate for your grade levels. You can use this as an independent activity, or take it a step further and make it a collaborative activity and see how the poetry evolves. You can use the "magnets" included, or even add your own text boxes to extend the activity.

"Google Plus is gaining such a huge momentum within educational circles. More and more teachers and educators are flocking to it and this is probably just the beginning. I have been using this platform since its early days and I have learned a great deal about it. I personally view it as a mixture of Twitter, Facebook and Skype all in one place.
