Reduced, Relevant and Reliable: Three Characterizing Traits of Great Curation

Reduced, Relevant and Reliable: Three Characterizing Traits of Great Curation | Zukunft des Lernens | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Jim Love, writes on his blog "Change the Game", a long article about curation and its reason d'etre.

Interesting thoughts overall, but the most valuable part, is in a few paragraphs, that distill clearly three important characterizing traits for quality curation.

Here is the part that caught my attention:

"Curation is a a filter.

An intelligent agent goes through the volume and the clutter and brings us a distilled version, reduced to it’s essence.

Great curation does three things. I call them the “3 Rs” - short for reduced, relevant and reliable.

Curation reduces the volume information from a particular domain to make it more manageable. It distills things to their essence.

It ensures that the information is relevant. Does it fit our interests and our needs? This is more difficult than it seems. Especially where the topic is new or unfamiliar we don’t always know what is valuable or how to describe it. It can also be intensely personal. We all have slightly different levels of need and the nuances of those needs are sometimes subtle.

Lastly, information must be reliable. Accuracy is critical and in the current world, difficult to establish. Is the story correct? Is the source reliable?"

Rightful. 8/10

Donald Clark Plan B: E-portfolios – 7 reasons why I don’t want my life in a shoebox | Zukunft des Lernens | Scoop.it

E-portfolios have taken up more conference time and wasted effort than almost any other learning technology topic I can recall. The idea’s been around since the nineties but isn’t it odd that no one seems to have one? Never has so much time been devoted to something with so little real impact. An army of researchers, academics and vendors have been touting the idea that everyone should have a shoebox of ‘stuff’ which they fill up as they go through life as ‘lifelong learners’. Politicians and educators of the ‘control freak variety’ love the idea, but like identity cards, the rest of us seem to be completely indifferent. So why have they not taken off?

Insgesamt entstanden so insgesamt 12 (3x2x2) verschiedene E-Portfoliotypen.

JANE HART: The Social Learning Revolution: ... How we really learn in the workplace

JANE HART: The Social Learning Revolution: ... How we really learn in the workplace | Zukunft des Lernens | Scoop.it

JANE HART ⋅ 8 FEBRUARY 2012

I think you will agree that for a long time now it has been the function of the Training Department to be responsible for “learning” in the workplace.

The prime role of this function (relatively recently renamed as the Learning & Development Department) has been to package-up and organise learning events – both internally or externally – either in the form of face-to-face classes or workshops, or as e-learning courses – or even blended solutions. Training Departments have also had the responsibility of tracking and managing this “learning” – usually with the help of some form of training or learning management system.

And that is how managers and other parts of the business see the function of training too: simply to create and deliver courses to solve perceived learning problems – because that is the way they have been conditioned to think about “learning” as Harold Jarche points out.

“Since the latter half of the 20th century, we have gone through a period where training departments have been directed to control organizational learning. It was part of the Taylorist, industrial model that also compartmentalized work and ensured that only managers were allowed to make decisions. In this context, only training professionals were allowed to talk about learning.”

Let Others Inspire Your Interactive E-Learning. Here’s How. » The Rapid eLearning Blog | Zukunft des Lernens | Scoop.it

Many people are stuck in the world of linear, click-and-read content. Sometimes it’s because that’s all the organization wants. And sometimes it’s because we’re not quite sure how to make something more interactive. It’s probably the subject I’m asked about the most. One of the most frequent questions I get. The cool thing is that regardless of the tools you use, you can still build interactive content.

One of the best ways to learn to build better courses is to find some good examples, break them apart, and then try to build something similar. This way you get some hands-on practice, which is a lot more valuable than reading about interactive elearning.

So in today’s post, we’ll look at a popular example and talk through a few ideas on interactivity.
