How to Choose the Right Words for Best Search Results | MindShift

Dear Savvy Searcher,

My students keep wanting to enter their entire research question into the search bar. I keep trying to tell them that’s a bad idea. How do you teach students to identify the right words to use in a search?

Curators Key Requirement: Critical Thinking

Robin Good: Critical thinking is a key strategic skill needed by any serious professional curator.

"Critical thinking provides the keys for our own intellectual independence..." and it helps to move away from "rashy conclusions, mystification and reluctance to question received wisdom, authority and tradition" while learning how to adopt "intellectual discipline" and a way to express clearly ideas while taking personal responsibility for them.

Key takeaways from this video:

Critical thinking refers to a diverse range of intellectual skills and activities concerned with "evaluating information" as well as our own thought in a disciplined way.
Critical thinking is not just thinking a lot. To be an effective critical thinker you need to seek out and be guided by "knowledge" and "evidence" that fits with reality even if it refutes what the general consensus may want to believe.
Critical thinkers cultivate an attitude of curiosity and they are willing to do the work required to keep themselves informed about a subject.
Critical thinkers do not take claims at face value but utilize scepticism and doubt to suspend judgement and objectively evaluate with facts the claims being made.
Critical thinkers should evaluate information on the basis of reasoning and not by relying on emotions as claims the factuality of a claim cannot be solely based on the level of emotion that accompanies them or the fact that they may be believed by certain groups.

Highly recommended for all curators. 9/10

Don’t Lecture Me: Rethinking How College Students Learn | MindShift

At the star-studded Harvard Initiative on Learning and Teaching (HILT) event earlier this month, where professors gathered to discuss innovative strategies for learning and teaching, Harvard’s professor Eric Mazur gave a talk on the benefits of practicing peer instruction in class, rather than the traditional lecture. The idea is getting traction. Here’s more about the practice.

Which eBook Publishing Service To Choose? 10 Questions To Ask Before Deciding

Robin Good: Choosing an eBook publishing service is not easy. There are many important variables at play, and taking them all into account, if you are doing this for the first time, is not easy.

Jane Friedman, has written a valuable article, analizyng and trying to answer each one of the key question any independent small publisher should ask before diving into publishing his next eBook.

Here the ten key questions you should be asking:

"1. Is the service exclusive or nonexclusive?

2. If it’s exclusive, what’s the term of the contract?

3. Do you control the price?

4. What’s the upfront fee and/or how is the royalty calculated?

5. Are there hidden fees or charges?

6. What file formats do they accept?

7. Who owns the e-book files after they are created?

8. Are DRM protections or proprietary formats involved?

9. Where is your e-book distributed?

10. Can you make changes to your e-book after it goes on sale?"

If you are looking to get specific advice and tips on each one of these questions, this article is for you.

Recommended. 9/10

A Turning Point for Personal Digital Learning: Better yet, create your way to lead the shift!

February 21, 2012 - by Tom Vander Ark

Fritjof Capra is a physicist who plowed the systems thinking ground for Peter Senge and the new science ground for Meg Wheatly. He opened his seminal piece The Turning Point by noting that man always assumes he is at a turning point. As a pattern spotter, I’m particularly susceptible to seeing turning points, but from the standpoint of global learning potential this decade really does appear to be pivotal in human history.

...

With Wikipedia, the last decade was the beginning of almost anyone can learn anything anywhere (Bonk, The World is Open). In this decade, the world will put the power of anywhere anytime learning to use through new and revitalized institutions and by empowering individual learners.

While economic concerns abound, I’m bullish on the global economy (particularly the back half of this decade) in large part because the appetite for and access to learning is changing the world. Here’s the macro equation:

...

Global communications: mobile phones have connected the planet (e.g., there are more than 650 million cell phones in India alone) and broadband penetration is increasing worldwide. Global networks are opening markets, easing transactions, and spreading the flow of information. Democracy and free markets are slowly taking hold worldwide driven, in large part, by mobile and social technology. The appetite for and access to learning increases every year. The idea economy is rewarding learning and innovation and is creating a global middle class. ... Your history teacher probably told you the printing press was a turning point in human history. Just watch what the shift to digital learning will do. Better yet, create your way to lead the shift.

New Online Teaching Model: Sage-on-the-Side?

"...What is the Sage-on-the Side?
I first came across the term, sage on the side while reading Campus Technology’s article ‘2012: What’s Hot, What’s Not’ which seems to describe the blending of theories of learning, constructivist and directive. Four technologists shared their views about upcoming learning trends and tools in educational technology. Consensus is, that college lectures as we know them, will transform given new technology (i.e. lecture capture, mobile devices), online learning and changes in learner styles.

We need a Sage AND a Guide
I do not suggest one theory is better than another – though I see parts of the theories being necessary in online learning as a new paradigm for college instruction emerges. Why?  First off, the  medium of delivery for online learning, the learning management platform (such as Moodle) forces change. And two, the learner has changed and the learning context. It’s no wonder that academia has been wary of online learning with this clash in ideologies. The instructor, (aka the sage) requires a completely different skill set for e-learning – he or she needs to be a mentor and the intellect. I  see the need for instructor’s knowledge (now more than ever) to be shared with students, especially since we have information available 24/7. These subject matter experts (sage or instructor), can help students discern, think and learn, but only with a skill set that can teach and communicate in the online environment..."

Doch was genau bedeutet das? Denn natürlich kann jeder Mensch beliebig viele Twitter-Accounts eröffnen und auch Firmen-Accounts darf man nicht vergessen.
