Learning Analytics: Lots of Education Data... Now What?

The Formation of a New Discipline

It was a sentiment repeated several times throughout the Learning Analytics and Knowledge 2012 conference: this could the beginning of a new discipline. It’s something I’ve heard at recent big data events too (namely at O’Reilly Media’s Strata conferences): we are forming a new field, one with new tools and new practices and new objects of inquiry. ...

Mobile IT in Higher Education, 2011 Report

Discussion about mobile IT in higher education is ubiquitous, but attaining benefits of mobility does not come easily. The ECAR mobile IT study gathered quantitative and qualitative data from a representative sample of 209 higher education institutions. Most respondents to ECAR's 2011 study report little progress in making institutional services, applications, and websites accessible on mobile devices. The average respondent institution has enabled only a few services for mobile access. ...

100 Web 2.0 Tools Every Teacher Should Know About | Edudemic

We’re always trying to figure out the best tools for teachers, trends in the education technology industry, and generally doing our darnedest to bring you new and exciting ways to enhance the classroom. But I wanted to take a moment to bring a wonderful list of resources to your attention.

Jane Hart of the United Kingdom’s Centre for Learning and Performance Technologies has been assembling a list of the best resources for the past five years. But these resources aren’t just randomly organized by popularity or something, the order is decided by a crowdsourced vote. What could be better than that? ...

Edshelf: An Educational App Directory for Teachers

Edshelf: "Find, Buy, Use" Educational Content
Edshelf aims to address problems that I’ve covered here on Hack Education before: there’s a ton of educational content online – websites, apps and the like. But the question remains: how do you find “what works” (and what works on a particular or across multiple platforms)? How do you find high quality resources for specific subjects or specific grades? ...

In dem Artikel “Eine Landkarte der Web 2.0-Dienste” hat Jöran Muuß-Merholz typische Einsatzmöglichkeiten verschiedener Web-2.0-Werkzeuge in Bildungsveranstaltungen eingeordnet. e-Denkarium » Blog Archiv » Tablets, Apps und das Internet der Dinge

G. Reinmann:

...Redemanuskript...

Flipping Blooms Taxonomy | Powerful Learning Practice

I think the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy is wrong.
Hear me out. I know this statement sounds heretical in the realms of education, but I think this is something we should rethink, especially since it is so widely taught to pre-service teachers. I agree that the taxonomy accurately classifies various types of cognitive thinking skills. It certainly identifies the different levels of complexity. But its organizing framework is dead wrong. Here’s why. ...

20 ways of thinking about digital literacy in higher education

"From understanding what digital literacy is, to developing skills and establishing ethical principles for students, our live chat panel share ideas and resources for universities...

Josie Fraser, social and educational technologist, Leicester City Council

First define what you mean by digital literacy: The definition I most frequently use is this one: digital literacy = digital tool knowledge + critical thinking + social engagement. Then it's worth knowing its main characteristics:

•  It supports and helps develop traditional literacies
•  It's a life-long practice
• It's about skills, competencies and critical reflection on how these skills and competencies are applied
• It's about social engagement"

Emotive Vocabulary in MOOCs: Context & Participant Retention - European Journal of Open, Distance and E-Learning

Abstract

Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs) have been growing in popularity with educational researchers, instructors, and learners in online environments. Online discussions are as important in MOOCs as in other online courses. Online discussions that occur in MOOCs are influenced by additional factors resulting from their volatile and voluntary participation structure. This article aims to examine discussions that took place in MobiMOOC in the spring of 2011, a MOOC structured around mobile learning. ...

Are You Qualified to Build E-Learning Courses? » The Rapid eLearning Blog

In a recent post I made this comment about rapid elearning tools:

Rapid elearning played a role in the evolution of elearning mostly because it took course creation out of the hands of a few programmers and placed it into the hands of anyone who wanted to create a course.
Someone asked if that’s a good thing to place the tools in the hands of anyone who wanted to create a course. It’s a good question. But is it the right question?
