«I want to share a quick and productive way to incorporate digital technology into a course by telling you about my recent experience using Zotero to do just that. Currently, I am a teaching assistant (TA) for Vanderbilt’s undergraduate Medical Anthropology course being taught by Dominique Behague. One of assignments involves students identifying books and articles related to issues we are reading about in class. The professor’s goal is get students thinking about what interests them and to start engaging with literature in the field, even if they do not closely read what they find. While student reading suggestions had in the past been submitted attached to their reading responses and not easily shared with other students, this year we are using a Zotero group library to create a shared, class bibliography».

«My love for Zotero is no secret, but even I have to admit that it's not perfect. Thankfully, a third-party plugin called Zotfile makes up for its minor flaws with PDF management. Here are the two features I’ve found particularly beneficial».

«In his work on the scholarly primitives constituting humanities scholarship, John Unsworth (2000) identified “discovering” and “annotating” as two of the first processes undertaken by humanities researchers (para. 3).These initial acts of information discovery and assessment are ideal areas for collaboration; long before there were computers or notions of shared credit, faculty members sent – and continue to send – their research assistants to find resources and create annotated bibliographies of their results […] Furthermore, in cases where teams do persist in using this collaborative tool, they are faced with the additional challenge of keeping track of large numbers of resources, as well as balancing the workload between contributors. With these challenges in mind, we created RefScape in order to visualize bibliographic resources among multiple researchers. The prototype we have developed is a browser-based plug-in that is compatible with Zotero, a program designed to collect and organize bibliographic resources…».

Digital software solutions for personal image collections have lagged behind digital asset management tools for institutional collections. Scholars often need a solution that can store and organize images, associate metadata, and output data in useful ways. Zotero, the open-source citation management software, is emerging as useful tool for personal image management and library organization. The author describes the applications and advantages of Zotero for personal image collections and its potential as a method by which personal and institutional collections may be more closely integrated.

«This extension aims to make Zotero effective for us LaTeX holdouts. At its core, it behaves like any Zotero import/export module; anywhere you can export or import bibliography items in Zotero, you'll find Better Bib(La)TeX listed as one of the choices. If nothing else, you could keep your existing workflow as-is, and just enjoy the emproved LaTeX <-> unicode translation on im-and export. Over and above this improvement, it adds the following features to Zotero…».
