This is an extended write-up that I originally prepared for the Zotero blog, but that turned out too extensive for that purpose. At first glance, the changes in Zotero 4.0 may seem small. It may ev...

«This morning, the number of citation styles in the Citation Style Language (CSL) repository went above 6000. This is an amazing success story for a tiny, unfunded open source project. Here are three reasons you should be excited about this».

«First, make sure Zotero is installed by opening the Firefox Add-ons Manager via Tools → Add-ons. (On recent versions of Windows, the menu bar may not be shown by default, in which case you can go to the main Firefox menu and select Add-ons.) Zotero should be listed in the Extensions pane of the Add-ons Manager. If Zotero appears in the extensions list, click on its Preferences or Options button to open the Zotero preferences and, in the General tab the preferences…»

«This, then is my experiment with reading lists this semester. It has been driven in part by the extent to which referencing management tool Zotero has become so deeply embedded in my own way of working, and in part by the tentative initial evidence which suggests that the quality of referencing and consistency of criticality in students work can tangibly benefit by using it.»

«Inspired by some recent posts and frankly, more than a little frustrated with some of the limitations I found in Mendeley, I finally went "all-in" for Zotero. Of course making this decision is only ever the first step. Next, I needed to set-up all my tools properly to ensure that the set-up worked for the workflow I intended. I started looking around and really couldn't find any step-by-step tutorials for setting up all three tools (at least not all in one place). Instead, details for setting up all three were often spread across many websites. So hope this step-by-step helps.»

Natl. Acad. Sci. USA ou sous la forme PNAS)…».

«Support for Scrivener and google docs is one of the most frequently requested Zotero features. It is with great excitement that Frank Bennett and I announce today RTF/OFD Scan for Zotero, a Zotero plugin that extends Zotero support to any word processor capable of saving/exporting ODF (Open Document Format — .odt). You can find a brief, but comprehensive set of instructions on the project webpage. Here some additional comment and pictures»…

«This video show the GoodReader integration in ZotPad. Starting from ZotPad 1.2.5, the files can be opened directly to GoodReader instead of using the built-in file viewer. The integration also has a "Save back" feature that streamlines the process of sending files back to ZotPad for uploading». Available in about a week.

«Zotero will accurately import metadata supplied by most bibliographic databases, library catalogs, publisher sites, and webpages. It will even make adjustments to the metadata to compensate for known quirks (author names in all upper case, etc.) in what the supplier provides. That said, sometimes the metadata that Zotero receives is incomplete or incorrect. For example, one major academic search site often provides the wrong serial name with otherwise correct metadata. Another scholarly research site's metadata can omit some of the authors' names or present them in the wrong order. Even major publishers sometimes provide individual authors' first and last names in the wrong order and inconstantly within the same journal volume and issue or even within the same article…».

«[…] The one big drawback to Zotero is how it handles PDFs once it downloads them. By default it moves them to a storage folder buried deep in your hard drive, and while it’s possible to move that folder into your Dropbox, it still retains Zotero’s convention of nesting your files within randomly named folders, like “3B329KFK.” Ick. The solution to this problem is Zotfile, a plugin for Zotero that allows you to choose where your files are stored and how they get named, without deep folder nesting … »

«Now that I've made a formal post about Zotero, this is the important follow-up- call it Zotero Part II. Of course there are tons of tips and tricks out there (just Google 'Zotero tips and tricks'), but the following are some of my favorite. I also think these are some of the most important to really get you started and so you get the most out of Zotero. I realize that many of these tips are probably available if one takes the time to carefully read the Zotero's manual, but I'm not one of those people (for better or worse) and frankly, I just don't think user manuals are all that user-friendly (an issue that has always mystified me). At any rate, many of these links will lead you to other great tips and tricks...»
