2 Paragraphs over Zoot Suits

Zoot suits

Arriel Houston's insight:

Zoot Suits are a man’s suit of an exaggerated style. Mexican Americans and African-Americans commonly wore them in the 1940s. This is when jazz was very common and people wanted to express their style. Zoot Suits might not seem like they were a very big problem but to some people they were. World War II was happening during this time period and I guess you can say some people were pretty sensitive about that. Policemen and servicemen were attacking young Mexican American men just because they wore Zoot Suits! They said they were being “unpatriotic” by wearing them. They called the Mexicans “miscreants” and put them in the category of “hoodlumism”. Servicemen would walk across the city of Los Angeles and attack Zoot Suitors for no reason. They would beat them, burn their clothing, and even pee on them. All the young men did was wear Zoot Suits and all they wanted to do was have fun. But they were attacked for no reason at all. I could imagine how they felt. Undignified and humiliated.

Even though this happened in the 1940s, discrimination is still happening today. It definitely tells you a little bit about the world we live in. No matter what we do or how hard we try, discrimination and racism will never end. Sometimes it can be the littlest things such as a racist comment but it still cuts deep. Or bigger things can happen such as mass murders just because someone doesn’t like another person’s race, ethnicity, color, gender, or sex. It’s absolutely ridiculous! I think that if someone is happy being who he or she is then you should not worry about him or her. If that person is not harming you or doing anything harmful or unlawful then you should let them be. People need to understand how to leave people alone and let them enjoy their life. But that is also another thing we cannot change… society. As us being humans we have our opinions on almost about everything. But some people’s opinions are very stronger than others. But that still does not give you the power to harm someone for no reason. Have you heard the quote “If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say it at all”? Everyone needs to abide by that rule mentally and physically and maybe, just maybe violence will die down a little.

American Experience . Zoot Suit Riots . Primary Sources | PBS

Arriel Houston's insight:

The Defense of Mexican American Youth wrote a letter to the Vice President of the United States Henry A. Wallace. They want them to do something about the wrongful accusations of Mexican youths. It all started with the Zoot Suit Riots and then in exploded from there. There were 24 Mexican American boys accused of murder from their neighborhood. They did nothing wrong but discrimination played a major role in their accusations. Policemen made fun of the Zoot Suits and used "Mexican" as a dirty word. After that a lot of racism and discrimation occured at theatres and swimming pools in Los Angeles. They Youth Commitee did not have enough power to stop that, but they expected maybe the Vice President could do something about it.

Arriel Houston's insight:

On June 3rd 1933, a violent racist outbreak occured. Sailors and servicemen ran across Los Angeles where they targeted and attacked Mexican American youths. They said it was a lack of patriotism by wearing Zoot Suits during war time. The Zoot Suiters were stripped, beaten, and even peed on. And their clothing was burned. A few days into the riots city council banned zuit suits because they were a "badge of hoodlumism". This exposed the tension between Whites  and Mexicans in America.

Trayvon Martin Shooting Fast Facts

Here's a look at what you need to know about the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in February 2012. Former neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman was acquitted of the crime in July 2013.
Arriel Houston's insight:

I connected the Zuit Suit Riots to the Trayvon Martin case. They both were dicriminated against and stereotyped when they were did nothing wrong. Zuit Suiters were attacked for being Mexican American and wearing Zuit Suits. Trayvon Martin was followed because he was a young African-American male walking through a white neighborhood. They both were attacked and Martin murdered even though they were innocent. This definelty tells you a little something about the people that live in our country. A quote that relates to this is "don't judge a book by its cover".

The Zoot-Suit Riots | Teaching Tolerance

Arriel Houston's insight:

The people who were harrassing the Chicano teenagers were police officers and servicemen. Each night, police officers waited for the GIs to leave office and then went in to arrest the Zuit Suiters. They went in and stripped them of their clothing and beat them. Zuit suits was a fashion trend amongst Mexican teenagers. First lady Eleanor Rooselvelt blamed the riots on "long-standing discrimination against the Mexicans in the Southwest."

Arriel Houston's insight:

August 14, 1944 Alice wrote a letter to Manny. She talked about how she cant wait to see him without regulations. Alice is waiting on the 18th to see Manny. She is talking about a case and evidence in the case. So I'm guessing that Manny is in jail and he's been in there for almost 2 years. It wouldn't surprise me if he was in jail because when officers attacked Zoot Suiters they usually arrested them. But i did not know they kept them in custody for that long until I read this letter.

The Zuit Suit was part of that jazz world that defied segregation. The young Mexican American men who wore Zuit Suits were accused to be associated with criminality and gangsterism by Los Angeles authorities. They were attacked by police officers and servicemen just for wearing the clothing.
