Warning Symptoms of Vitamin B12 Deficiency and How to Correct It - This vitamin is dubbed the energy vitamin and its shortage can result in an array of health problems, including some potentially very serious conditions.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

B-12, one of the B complex vitamins is an essential anti-fatigue vitamin because its function is essential to energy production. from cell formation, to helping produce adrenal hormones.  B-12 works with folic acid to control the production of oxygen-carrying red blood cells and keeps your nervous system healthy by helping your body use iron.

This Is Your Brain On Junk Food

This Is Your Brain On Junk Food | zestful living | Scoop.it
Food companies are spending millions of dollars to design foods with addictive sensations. What can you and I do about it? Is there any way to counteract the money, the science, and the advertising behind the junk food industry?

Via The BioSync Team
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Read how the food companies trick you into craving junk food by making certain foods more addictive and tasty than others.

Steven Witherly, a food scientist has spent the last 20 years studying the why of addictive junk food. Read the entire article to get links to his excellent report, "Why Humans Like Junk Food".

Witherly says there are 2 factors that make eating pleasurable: one is the sensation of eating the food. This includes tastes, smell, and mouthfeel - which is very important. Food companies spend millions of dollars to discover the satisfying level of crunch in a potato chip or the perfect amount of fizzle in a soda. These factors all combine to create the food your brain craves.

The second factor is the actual macronutrient makeup of the food - blend of proteins, carbs, and fats it contains. And in the case of junk food, the manufacturers are looking for the perfect combination of salt, sugar, and fat that excites your brain, and gets you coming back for more.

So what can you do about this craving because as you probably know by now, junk food is unhealthy and causes a myriad of chronic diseases, weight gain, obesity, and even death in certain individuals.

As you begin eating less and less processed foods, you begin to go through a transition period known as "gene reprogramming".

Best strategy is to avoid buying these products. If you can't do that then try to reduce the amount you buy/eat by using his strategies.

"Outer ring" and "5 ingredient rule".

Shop on the outer ring of the grocery store where the produce section is located and the eggs, meats, fish etc. Remember you're really wanting real whole food, food that you're body recognizes, and food that serves your body.

.If the product has more than 5 ingredients, then put it back on the shelf. It most likely is trying to trick you into buying.

Eat a variety of foods and eat Rainbow Foods. These are the foods that contain the antioxidants, the phytonutrients, the minerals, and vitamins that your body craves.

Instead of eating a chip with a dip of unknown ingredients. try eating carrots, celery, red, orange peppers with hummus or nut butters. You'll still get the crunch and your body will thank you by keeping you healthy. Just remember to chew slowly and you'll get a great mouthfeel. Plus your digestive system will be happy.

And there are better alternatives to handling stress than eating junk foods which really do not comfort you in the long run. Listen to music you like, get up and dance with your special ones, breathe deeply and let out a pleasurable sound, try yoga, meditation, take a nature walk, sing in the shower, laugh for no reason - a great stress reducer, help someone else and you'll forget your problems.

The Top 10 Sources of Vegetable-Based Protein — Wellnessbin | zestful living | Scoop.it
Majority of the population are aware of the fact that plants are one of the best sources of protein. Despite this fact, many consumers still prefer purchasing meat products and consider them as the best protein sources. As protein is considered a fundamental pat of nutrition due to its many functions, ranging from faster recovery
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that plant based foods are rich in protein that is easier for your body to digest than animal based protein?  Your best bet is to add a combination of nutrient dense seeds like pumpkin, hemp, chia, with protein rich greens as in spinach, kale,  spiralina and sprouted /micro-greens. Add ancient grains as in quinoa, amaranth, teff, millet, buckwheat which are great sources of protein.

Protein comes from amino acids which only plants provide. Protein supports the muscles, tendons, and collagen production in your body. It also keeps your bones strong and influences neurotransmitter function in your brain. Plant foods rich in proteins include fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Plant based foods promote an anti-inflammatory body.

Health tips Many plant foods contain protein as in nuts, legumes (beans, split peas, peas, lentils), veggies like broccoli and sprouted/ micro-greens as in arugula, broccoli, radish, sunflower, and buckwheat. Plant based protein powders as in hemp, pea, coconut flour.

Did you know that more body builders are switching to plant based? Well unless you're an athlete, you don't need a lot of protein to form complete proteins. One half pound of protein per pound of body weight is usually more than enough.

20 Zero Calorie Foods to Help You Slim Down

20 Zero Calorie Foods to Help You Slim Down | zestful living | Scoop.it
The theory behind zero calorie or negative calorie foods is that they contain such a scant amount of calories that the energy you expend eating them cancels out their calories. In essence the bottom line is that you don’t take on any excess calories, and in some instances you end up burning...
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know there are plant based real whole foods that when consumed help you to not gain weight? These foods are known as zero calorie as they contain very few calories. And whether you're trying to lose weight or not, these foods are excellent for your body's health.

Health Tips:  Celery is revered in Chinese medicine as a treatment for high blood pressure. It contains a compound apigenin which dilates blood vessels and reduces the circulatory force of your bloodstream. Celery is also high in potassium which can neutralize it's sodium content.

Beets also lower blood pressure and are a beta carotene food as are carrots. Most produce with bright vivid colors contain beta-carotene, a pigment that fights lung, colon, and pancreatic cancer. It's been shown that it's better for you to consume the actual produce rather than relying on beta-carotene supplements.

Cucumber and zucchini are great low calorie fruits which like celery are a great source of water. Lemon, lime, grapefruit, and oranges are excellent citrus fruits rich in vitamin C.  You can freeze lemons/limes to easily grate the rind for zest which you can add to your recipes/meals. The rind contains most of the potent antioxidants. Grapefruit is a good fruit to eat before eating your first meal of the day.

Cabbage, kale, broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, turnips, and cauliflower are members of the crucifers; which are one of the very best food sources for combating cancer.  Tomatoes, watermelon, and pink grapefruit are foods rich in the antioxidant lycopene, another cancer fighter.

Consuming plant based real whole food without additional processed sugary non food and moving throughout your day is one of the best ways to stay slim, trim, and healthy for a lifetime.

12 Antioxidant-Rich Foods to Boost Your Immune System

12 Antioxidant-Rich Foods to Boost Your Immune System | zestful living | Scoop.it
Did you know that Antioxidants found in foods protect your cells from the effects of free radicals? They also help reduce an overabundance of inflammation in your body.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Are you eating as many vibrant dark pigmented greens, veggies,  and fruits each day to amp up your antioxidant levels? Antioxidants, you now know fight free radicals which cause inflammation in your body. Inflammation is no longer the silent killer as more of you are waking up to its role as the driver of chronic disease, cancer, and dementia.

Health tips: Dark greens and berries are by far the very best plants to put out the systemic inflammation. Eat a variety of rainbow colored produce every day. Remember, sharp colors and flavors are the beneficial antioxidants.

Bright red tomatoes, watermelon, and pink grapefruit are rich in the antioxidant lycopene, which appears to slow the growth of cancer cells. Leafy greens, like Swiss chard, spinach, and turnip greens are good sources for vitamin E and zeaxanthin, two  antioxidants that have been shown to relieve arthritis pain, when combined with foods rich in vitamin C. 13 Herbs and Spices That Can Reduce Inflammation | Care2 Healthy Living

13 Herbs and Spices That Can Reduce Inflammation | Care2 Healthy Living | zestful living | Scoop.it
Find out 13 herbs and spices you can use to reduce inflammation naturally.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that it's far better for your body to take small amounts of Mother Nature's medicinals known as herbs and spices than take pharmaceutical drugs to help with inflammation?

Drugs which are derived from herbs consist of one, and sometimes two medically active chemical compounds, carrier compounds and a buffer.

Herbs and herbal formulas usually contain dozens and even hundreds of active ingredients. The many different ingredients act on your body, and on one another, simultaneously. This makes the active ingredients of the herb more effective. It also helps to prevent toxic reactions that lead to side effects. Herbal remedies are more likely to correct body imbalances without creating additional problems.

Health Tips:  Most of you are familiar with the herbs you read about or use daily. Turmeric, ginger, cloves, green tea, cinnamon, cayenne, garlic, rosemary, sage, parsley, and thyme. There are many more immune boosting, antioxidant rich herbs and herbs which are known as adaptogens (helping your body to adapt to stress and infection).

Here are a few others:  Echinacea, Elderberry, Ginseng, , Hawthorn, Milk Thistle, and Quercetin. There are many others as well. More on that later.

Are you aware that cilantro is one of the oldest herbal remedies.? Taking about twenty sprigs of cilantro daily for two months reduces inflammation levels in people suffering from arthritis and also helps gout sufferers.

Here's something you may not know, but red pepper powder, one and a half teaspoons worth  taken daily for a month improves stomach pain and nausea for chronic indigestion sufferers. This information comes from Dr Michael Greger's new book, "How Not to Die".

4 Foods That Age You Faster

4 Foods That Age You Faster | zestful living | Scoop.it
If you eat highly inflammatory foods on a regular basis, they can do real damage to your body’s regulatory functions, leading to disease, cellular degeneration and yes, wrinkles.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that the number one food that ages you faster in well defined ways is high consumption of sugar, aka sweet poison? Know anyone with uncontrolled diabetes? This is being on the fast track to high speed aging.

Other major age robbers:  fried foods, highly refined processed non food, simple carbs (white flour, boxed commercial cookies, pies, cakes), salad dressings, ketchup), microwave popcorn, trans fats, charred food, well or overcooked animal food, and all pro-inflammatory food. And let's not forget caffeinated beverages and so called energy drinks which are dehydrating to your skin.

If  you're a healthy person, contrary to what the text under the photo says, there is no such thing as moderation for food that is charred or grilled.

Health Tips: Antioxidants found in plant based produce and other antioxidants like alpha lipoid acid, NAC, vitamins, and others help fight free radical damage which causes inflammation which leads to chronic disease and cancer. Plant foods contain sixty-four times more antioxidants than animal food.

Reduce and/or eliminate your consumption of all sugars (words ending in "ose" high fructose corn syrup, hidden sugar,  and artificial sweeteners), refined processed fake food, dairy,  vegetable oils.

17 Science-Based Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

17 Science-Based Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids | zestful living | Scoop.it
Omega-3 fatty acids are incredibly important for your body and brain. This article lists 17 science-based health benefits of omega-3s.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that plant based real whole food is the best way for you to get your omega 3 fatty acids?  Essential fatty acids are fat your body cannot make, so they need to be obtained from the food you consume.

Omega 3s reduce inflammation. Alpha linoleic acid (ALA) is an omega 3 essential fatty acid (EFA). which has a positive effect on cardiovascular health, neuroprotection, anti-inflammation, and your immune system.

DHA is an essential building block of tissue and retina in the eye. It helps with brain function, including the formation of certain neural transmitters, and plays plays an important role during fetal development, early infancy, and old age.

EPA is converted into hormone like substances  (prostaglandins), which regulate cell activity and healthy cardiovascular function.  DHA and EPA act as a source of energy, insulate the body against heat loss, prevent skin from drying and flaking, and cushion tissues and organs. It's important to eat all three sources of omega 3s- ALA, DHA, EPA.

Are you aware that most people in the U.S. eat too many omega 6s which are pro-inflammatory? When you eat more than four times the amount of omega 6s to omega 3s, you tend to create excess inflammation.

Health Tips:  Omega 6 fats are mostly found in animal and processed food. Omega 3 fats are found in dark leafy greens, flax, chia, and hemp seeds, and certain types of algae. Omega 3 fats can also be found in smaller amounts in fruit and non green veggies. Winter squash has a high concentration of (ALA)

Consuming greens, edible weeds like purslane, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, and lots of flax, chia, hemp seeds contains a good amount of omega 3s. Healthy fats help lower blood glucose and insulin resistance.

Plant based sources of high in DHA and EPA are blue-green algae which are rich in vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. You don't need to toxic fish. Just eat what the fish eat to get your DHA/EPA: sea veggies, plankton, and algae, and cyanobacteria.

You can also purchase online vegan sources of DHA/EPA. The more plant based you buy, the more companies will provide sources.

Is Your Chocolate Real? Cacao vs Cocoa: What You Need To Know...

Is Your Chocolate Real? Cacao vs Cocoa: What You Need To Know... | zestful living | Scoop.it
Are you actually eating real chocolate? The disappointing answer is most likely not. However it's actually easy to tell - if you know what to look for.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know there's a huge nutritional difference between dark cacao and cocoa?  Dark cacao is the antioxidant boosting raw unrefined chocolate, the one with all the vitamins and minerals like magnesium. Cocoa, is the processed refined chocolate with little of the dark cacao and usually contains sugar.

Which one would you rather have for your body? As usual food manufacturers  often falsely advertise the cocoa as healthy when it's definitely not. Be aware and read labels. You want to read the words "raw, unrefined, GMO free with no sugar".

Health Tips:  Dark cacao comes in powder and as cacao beans. When you buy chocolate bars, check to see how high the cacao is. You want at least 85%. The problem is that most all these bars have evaporated cane sugar in the ingredients. Try to find ones without any sugar or other sweeteners.

You know you can make your own delicious dark chocolate. Use raw organic cacao butter, extra virgin raw coconut butter, and grade B maple syrup. Chocolate never tasted so good. Use this chocolate for your real hot cocoa with coconut milk.

6 Foods That Fight Inflammation - Get Healthy U | zestful living | Scoop.it
Learn why inflammation is so harmful to the body and what these 6 foods can do to naturally fight it.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that all real whole plant based foods fight inflammation as they are anti-inflammatory foods? Some like dark leafy greens, alliums (garlic and onion), and cruciferous veggies (broccoli, kale, cauliflower, cabbage) are extra cancer fighters. Medicinal mushrooms (fungi) are immune boosters.

Anytime you invest in your health by consuming nutrient dense plant foods, you are protecting your body and preventing disease. Eat as much raw living food as you can and add lightly cooked foods to your regimen. Raw foods give you more energy and help you feel more alive with a greater feeling of well-being.

Health tips: Add sprouted seeds, nuts, and ancient grains to help you better digest your food through enzymes and proteins that act as catalysts for your body's functions.  Also add sea veggies which help to detox your body by preventing assimilation of heavy metals, such as cadmium and other environmental toxins.

Remember to drink half your weight in filtered water every day, throughout your day. Also remember that plants are rich in omega 3's, with sources of ALA, EPA, and DHA. Flax, hemp and chia seeds are good ounces of ALA and also winter squash. Best sources of EPA/DHA  are found in wild berries, wild edible weeds like purslane, and sea veggies.

Seaweed including wakame, dulse, kombu, and nori contain both EPA and DHA. Wakame also has high levels of calcium, iodine, thiamine, and niacin. Are you aware that fish get their  EPA/DHA from sea veggies?  So eat the sea veggies and let the fish live their lives.

11 Reasons Why You Should Eat More Bananas

11 Reasons Why You Should Eat More Bananas | zestful living | Scoop.it
Bananas are healthy and delicious, and contain many essential nutrients. Bananas are rich in a fiber called pectin. Bananas contain a fair amount of fiber
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that not everything you read about bananas is true? Say hello to the food manufacturers again and their over the top marketing.

Yes, bananas are a fun fruit to eat and when added to recipes, make them creamy. However, yellow bananas are not high in antioxidants and potassium as most people erroneously believe. Wild dark bananas are great sources of both.

When humans lived in the hunter-gatherer time and ate mostly plants, people ate 10,000 mg of potassium daily. Today, less than 2% of people in the U.S. are lucky to get about 3,000 mg daily. The recommended minimum requirement is 4,700 mg daily. This information comes from Dr Michael Greger, www.nutritionfacts.org  "According to the current USDA database, bananas don't even make the list of the top thousand foods with the highest level of potassium. They come in at number, 1,611, right after Reese's Pieces".

Health Tips:  If you, like this subscriber does, enjoy bananas, then eat them. However, eat a wide variety of other fruit and different plant based real whole food sources. Plants are your best source of antioxidants and potassium.

Potassium is important for your heart health. Every cell in your body requires this mineral, and you need to get it from the food you consume. Potassium is needed for both heart disease and stroke.

Top sources of potassium rich foods are greens, beans, and sweet potatoes.

4 Reasons Why You Should Eat More Mushrooms

4 Reasons Why You Should Eat More Mushrooms | zestful living | Scoop.it
Mushrooms can help in the fight against cancer. A study in the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms found that chaga mushrooms inhibited cancer
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that mushrooms, especially Medicinal mushrooms have been used for 5,000 years for nutritional and medicinal purposes in East Asia?

Health Tips:  Maitake mushrooms are classified as adaptogens, herbs that help the body adapt to stress and resist infection. These mushrooms have been shown to significantly boost your immune system and build immune reserves. Maitake is a proven cancer fighter. Take under supervision of health professional.

Reishi mushroom ranks as one of the best Chinese tonics and has been reported to boost energy, help the body resist disease and stress, and promote longevity. Reishi is also considered an adaptogen and Western herbalists recommend it as an immune stimulant. It's used to treat allergies, asthma, and mushroom poisoning. Reishi is also a cancer fighter and is probably the most widely available medicinal mushroom. It is available as food, teas, syrups, tinctures, and tablets. Avoid if you have allergies to other mushrooms or molds. Take under doctor's care if taking blood thinning meds.

Shiitake mushroom is good for preventing high blood pressure and heart disease, controlling cholesterol levels, building resistance to viruses, and fighting diseases like cancer. shiitake contains polysaccharides (complex sugars) that stimulate the immune system to fight colds. It can be eaten as food and is available in tinctures and tablets. Avoid if you have bladder cancer.

Chaga mushroom is highly sought after due to its high levels of antioxidants and healing properties. Chaga is rich in vitamins, A, B, C, D, E and minerals such as manganese, iron, calcium, zinc, selenium. Chaga contains powerful anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, anti-candida, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Chaga is rich in beta-glucans which strengthen and reinforce the immune system which is great for people with auto-immune disorders, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn's disease, lymphoma, bursitis, shingles, and PCOS. Chaga tea is very beneficial.

Turmeric Curcumin, a natural phenol… [read more]
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that plant based real whole food is anti-inflammatory and can help alleviate pain?   Medicinal herbs and spices have the highest concentration of antioxidants. Antioxidant rich foods protect against stroke, can help decrease artery stiffness, prevent blood clots from forming, and lower blood pressure and inflammation.

Health Tips:  All plant food have anti-inflammatory effects, but some plants are better than others. Berries and dark leafy greens have been found to be significantly better at dousing systemic inflammation than more common lower antioxidant produce, such as bananas and lettuce. This information comes from Dr Michael Greger's new book, "How Not to Die".

When you buy produce, opt for the darker pigmented varieties as in red onions, beets, purple cabbage, carrots, potatoes, green or orange cauliflower as these have more antioxidants. The more bitter and pungent greens and veggies appear, the better for your health. Sharp colors and flavors, these are the antioxidants. Think bright orange turmeric, yellow ginger, and cumin. Use these herbs in place of common salt for more flavorful and colorful meals.

Caveat: if you suffer from gallstones avoid turmeric as it may trigger pain. And be careful eating too much turmeric as it may increase the risk of kidney stones.

11 Foods to Avoid If You Want to Lose Weight

11 Foods to Avoid If You Want to Lose Weight | zestful living | Scoop.it
Here are 11 foods to avoid when you’re trying to lose weight. From french fries to candy to fruit juices to pizza to ice cream to white bread to cookies
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that consuming plant based real whole foods, moving throughout your day, and following a healthy lifestyle is the best way to lose weight and be healthy for a lifetime.  Ditch the sugary junk food, the animal based food, a sedentary lifestyle, and negativity.

Are you aware that real food has no ingredients and no labels? Processed highly refined sugary non food is loaded with ingredients and most are either GMO, chemical additives, and/or hidden sugars.

You have to be good detectives, read labels, and ascertain that what's in the package is the real deal. Whatever you do, don't just  accept the food manufacturers wording on the front of the box.

The wording: "Natural, sugar free, multi-grain, fat free, gluten-free, something" is meaningless. Stay away from the word "natural" as it's anything but. The product may have no sucrose (table sugar), but may still have hidden sugars or artificial sweeteners. Any word ending in "ose" is still sugar. Multigrain usually means GMO and also has gluten in it.  With grains, you have to be very careful, if you're gluten sensitive.  Most grains have been cross contaminated. With Fat-free, be careful, because that usually means extra sugar and salt are added.

When you purchase produce, you're getting real whole food. Save money by buying nuts, seeds, organic and/or certified organic ancient grains, herbs and spices in bulk from a local healthy market,  food co-op, and/or Farmer's Market or CSA where you know the store and produce managers,or  the farmers.

If you live in one of those food deserts, find a reputable online healthy organic company that delivers and also gives back to the less fortunate. No family should have to do without nutritious food.

Speak to your representatives and start a community garden in your neighborhood and/ or with friends start discussions with your city council to encourage healthy markets to build in your area.

Grapefruit, Not Just For Weight Loss Anymore | Care2 Healthy Living

Grapefruit, Not Just For Weight Loss Anymore | Care2 Healthy Living | zestful living | Scoop.it
“So far I've always kept my diet secret but now I might as well tell everyone what it is. Lots of grapefruit throughout the day and plenty of virile young men
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that the dietary factor best able to boost DNA repair is citrus fruit? "Within two hours of consuming citrus, your DNA becomes significantly more resistant to damage". This information comes from Dr Michael Greger's new book, "How Not to Die:".

Health Tips:  eat whole fruit as opposed to juices, except for green juices. Are you aware that drinking orange juice every morning may increase skin cancer risk? Adding zest to your meals increases the benefits and provides a flavorful taste. Freeze your lemons, limes, and oranges to make it easier to grate for the zest.

Do check with your doctor if you're taking prescription meds, as grapefruit can suppress the enzymes that help clear drugs and less drug clearance means higher levels in your body. Higher levels can increase side effects of drugs.
