5 Probiotic Foods You Should Be Eating | zestful living | Scoop.it
We and the bacteria are symbiotes, which means we need each other to survive. The microbes coating our skin

Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that 70-80%  of your immune system resides in your gut, your G.I. Tract. Humans wouldn't be alive without the good bacteria that resides in our body. We have a symbiotic relationship.

Probiotic foods which are known as fermented foods (they are cultured a certain way) and probiotic supplements are needed to assist the good bacteria to do their work in your body.

Here's 5 probiotic foods that you may want to try. Your bacteria will thank you for it.

Just know that most commercial bought yogurts are loaded with sugar which negates any benefits. You can easily make your own nut yogurts or dairy yogurts. Recipes abound on the internet. Kefir is another fermented food, not mentioned in the article. There are water-kefirs and dairy kefirs.

Integrieren Sie fermentierte Lebensmittel in Ihren Speiseplan!

This Is Your Brain On Junk Food

This Is Your Brain On Junk Food | zestful living | Scoop.it
Food companies are spending millions of dollars to design foods with addictive sensations. What can you and I do about it? Is there any way to counteract the money, the science, and the advertising behind the junk food industry?

Via The BioSync Team
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Read how the food companies trick you into craving junk food by making certain foods more addictive and tasty than others.

Steven Witherly, a food scientist has spent the last 20 years studying the why of addictive junk food. Read the entire article to get links to his excellent report, "Why Humans Like Junk Food".

Witherly says there are 2 factors that make eating pleasurable: one is the sensation of eating the food. This includes tastes, smell, and mouthfeel - which is very important. Food companies spend millions of dollars to discover the satisfying level of crunch in a potato chip or the perfect amount of fizzle in a soda. These factors all combine to create the food your brain craves.

The second factor is the actual macronutrient makeup of the food - blend of proteins, carbs, and fats it contains. And in the case of junk food, the manufacturers are looking for the perfect combination of salt, sugar, and fat that excites your brain, and gets you coming back for more.

So what can you do about this craving because as you probably know by now, junk food is unhealthy and causes a myriad of chronic diseases, weight gain, obesity, and even death in certain individuals.

As you begin eating less and less processed foods, you begin to go through a transition period known as "gene reprogramming".

Best strategy is to avoid buying these products. If you can't do that then try to reduce the amount you buy/eat by using his strategies.

"Outer ring" and "5 ingredient rule".

Shop on the outer ring of the grocery store where the produce section is located and the eggs, meats, fish etc. Remember you're really wanting real whole food, food that you're body recognizes, and food that serves your body.

.If the product has more than 5 ingredients, then put it back on the shelf. It most likely is trying to trick you into buying.

Eat a variety of foods and eat Rainbow Foods. These are the foods that contain the antioxidants, the phytonutrients, the minerals, and vitamins that your body craves.

Instead of eating a chip with a dip of unknown ingredients. try eating carrots, celery, red, orange peppers with hummus or nut butters. You'll still get the crunch and your body will thank you by keeping you healthy. Just remember to chew slowly and you'll get a great mouthfeel. Plus your digestive system will be happy.

And there are better alternatives to handling stress than eating junk foods which really do not comfort you in the long run. Listen to music you like, get up and dance with your special ones, breathe deeply and let out a pleasurable sound, try yoga, meditation, take a nature walk, sing in the shower, laugh for no reason - a great stress reducer, help someone else and you'll forget your problems.

The Powerful Healing Benefits of Ginger

The Powerful Healing Benefits of Ginger | zestful living | Scoop.it

Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that Mother Nature's proprietary medicinals aka herbs and spices have been used as natural remedies for thousands of years in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine  because they work? Today modern science is catching up with ancient wisdom.

Herbs and spices are potent sources of antioxidants and plant nutrients that can inhibit carcinogenic formation and activation. Two of ginger's compounds contain anticancer properties. One is gingerol. Gingerol antioxidants have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties. The other compound 6-shagaol and "two others found in ginger showed significant anti-cancer properties" Read the article for all the details.

Health Tips: Since ginger speeds up the digestive process, as well as nourishes your liver, promotes circulation, reduces swelling and pain, prevents nausea, is effective for colds, flu, and strep throat; it is highly recommended as a low cost holistic remedy. Best to consume raw grated ginger root, or powdered ginger. Ginger tea and tinctures are also recommended.

5 Ways That You Can Lower Your Blood Pressure

5 Ways That You Can Lower Your Blood Pressure | zestful living | Scoop.it
High blood pressure (also known as hypertension) puts you at risk for a heart attack, stroke or heart disease... The #1 killer in America.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that consuming plant based real whole food and adopting health conscious lifestyle habits help you to lower your blood pressure?  High blood pressure is often referred to as hypertension. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis.

Are you aware that the number one risk factor for death in the world today is high blood pressure?  Hypertension is responsible for the deaths of nine million lives worldwide every year. This is a frightening statistic, especially so in the light that hypertension contributes to deaths from a variety of causes including aneurysms, heart attacks, heart failure, kidney failure, and stroke. This information comes from Dr Michael Greger, "How Not to Die".

Hypertension is also known as the "silent killer".

The American Heart Association states that normal blood pressure readings be 120/80. The first number (systolic) represents the pressure in your arteries as your blood pumps from the heart. The second number (diastolic) is the pressure of your arteries while the heart is resting between beat. Numbers over 140/90 are considered hypertensive.

Life extension, a research and development science based company suggests that it is recommended to maintain blood pressure at 115/75. According to Life extension, when blood pressure exceeds 115/75, there is an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

People living in rural Kenya who primarily eat a low sodium  plant based regimen at age sixty, have average blood pressure readings at 110/70.

Increased blood pressure puts a huge strain on your heart and can damage the sensitive blood vessels in your eyes and kidneys. It can cause bleeding in your brain and cause some arteries to rupture. Sodium raises blood pressure in well defined ways.

Health Tips: You might be surprised to learn that not only does the food industry add salt to chips, nuts  and pretzels. It also adds salt to meat as it draws in water , increasing its weight. Another sick fact is that the poultry industry injects chicken carcasses with salt water to artificially inflate their weight, yet as Dr Michael Greger says, they can still be labelled "100 percent natural".

You've read on this site that your tastebuds can change in as little as three weeks. Begin today and start adding herbs and spices to your food for a healthier taste sensation. You can do the same thing with sweets too.

Purchase very little processed non food, drastically reduce your intake of sugars, and vegetable oils, reduce or eliminate your consumption of animal based foods, and consume much more plant based whole food including legumes (beans, lentils, peas), greens, veggies, fruit (pomegranate),, nuts/seeds, some ancient whole grains, sprouts, blue-green algae, chlorella.

Get more exercise while eating healthier to help you reduce your body weight. Walking works as does aerobic exercises. Later as you're body adjusts,  you can add high intensity workouts and weight lifting.

Consume a few tablespoons of ground flaxseeds as they have been shown to be two to three times more effective than adopting an aerobic exercise program. Doing both ups your protection. Watermelon also offers protection, but you have eat about two pounds a day which is not recommended.

Consume nitrate rich veggies, including beet greens, beets, and other greens, cilantro, rhubarb, basil, arugula, swiss chard, and butter leaf lettuce.  When you eat nitrate rich veggies, your body converts the nitrates into nitric oxide (NO) which signals the muscle fibers in the walls of your arteries to relax and allow more oxygenated blood flow in.

Athletes drinking nitrate rich beet juice have shown greater endurance while using less oxygen, making their bodies energy production more efficient. From Dr Michael Greger. "No drug, steroid, supplement, or intervention had ever before been shown to do what beet juice could do".

5 Reasons to Eat Colorful Foods

5 Reasons to Eat Colorful Foods | zestful living | Scoop.it
By Elise MuselesThere are lots of reasons to load up on deeply pigmented fruits and vegetables, but for me, the best reason is that it makes me happy. We feel invigorated and energized just looking at brightly colored meals—not to mention all the health benefits our bodies get from eatin
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that the dark pigmented greens, veggies and fruits have the most antioxidants in the plant world? Every plant has a different set of special plant nutrients consisting of their various antioxidant rich groups. Many of these plant nutrients come from antioxidant rich phenols and terpenes.

Plant nutrients support the on-going daily functioning and repair of every organ, bone, and tissue in your body and your body doesn't function without them. The darker the color the more concentration of plant nutrient antioxidants. These are the healing compounds.

Here in the phenol group you find dark blue and purple anthocyanins which support the structure of collagen in the body's skin, muscles, and bones. The dark blue and purple pigments also lend support for your vision by protecting against free radicals caused by inflammation.

Darker pigmented terpenes include the orange, yellow, or red carotenoids such as beta-carotene, (carrots, sweet potatoes, winter squash), lutein (dark leafy greens), and lycopene (watermelon, tomatoes, pink grapefruit, papaya). Also included is the yellow and orange limonoids found in citrus. Carotenoids are associated with protection from cancer and macular degeneration. Limonoids also help protect the lungs.

Health Tips: Eat a rainbow of produce every day. Many Americans only eat the colorless, beige  fruits (bananas) and other foods (white potatoes, white bread, white rice, white pasta, white flour).

Enliven your health. Which would you choose: red cabbage or light green cabbage; red onion or white/yellow onion? According to Dr Michael Greger, "How Not to Die" red onions have 76 percent more antioxidants than white with yellow in between. Red cabbage  may contain eight times more antioxidants than the green variety.

Some veggies/fruits like cauliflower, parsnips, daikon radish, jicama are whitish. These white foods are good for your body. Consume them. You can also find green and purple cauliflower in specialty health markets, food co-ops, farmers markets, and organic online CSAs.

The dark colored food pigments that give juicy blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries or dark leafy greens their healing colors also help support your body. Yes you can eat white potatoes and bananas, but also eat more of the rainbow of colors everyday.

f you live in a food desert, connect with neighbors, food justice groups, Legislators to start a community garden and grow your own healthy produce using compost. Mother Earth News online has very good resources in their articles. Everyone of you deserve to eat healthy food. Let's do our best to find ways to provide food so no one, especially young children go to bed and wake up hungry.

Olive Oil is Not Healthy - Video | Holistic Health & Rehab

Olive Oil is Not Healthy - Video | Holistic Health & Rehab | zestful living | Scoop.it
Olive Oil is Not Healthy – Video :  If you read the studies, the Mediterranean Diet is healthy IN SPITE OF olive oil, not because of it.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that liquid cooking oils, including olive oil are not as healthy as you've been led to believe? In studies people consuming the Mediterranean diet are healthy from the abundance of plant based real whole foods, not from the consumption of the olive oil. Most of the nutrition in olive oil has been removed. Consume olives that are not soaked in brine.

Dr Michael Greger, "How Not to Die" refers to cooking oils as the "table sugar of the fat kingdom". He writes that "even extra-virgin olive oil may impair your arteries' ability to relax and dilate normally". Dr Michael Klaper, MD says that most people don't use moderation and therefore they should avoid using any olive oil.

Watch the video to learn more. Dr Michael Klaper has been practicing for more than forty years in  preventative and nutrition based medicine. He believes that proper nutrition and balanced lifestyle are essential for health.

Health Tips:  Use organic extra virgin olive oil in teeny amounts for your salads, if you prefer this oil. Or use homemade hummus for a salad dressing.  All heated oils are carcinogenic says Brian Clement, Nutritionist and Director of Hippocrates Health Institute. You can always use veggie broths, tomato sauces, or filtered water to cook your foods. They work just fine.

Are you aware that one tablespoon of cooking oil can contain more than one hundred calories without even filling you up?  Eat more avocados and raw nuts for your healthy fat.

7 Superfoods That Help You Burn Fat

7 Superfoods That Help You Burn Fat | zestful living | Scoop.it

Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that many plant based real whole foods have an abundance of special nutrients that other foods don't?  Take  cruciferous veggies for example, which contain sulforaphane, a liver enzyme detox boosting compound. Then there's flaxseeds with the anti-cancer lignan compounds.

Are you aware that berries offer protection against cancer, boost your immune system, help your liver and brain? They are considered the healthiest fruit, taste great, and may help you live longer.. An American Cancer Society study of close to one hundred thousand men and women found that those people who ate the most berries appeared less likely to die of cardiovascular disease. This information from Dr Michael Greger, "How Not to Die".

Health Tips:  Dark leafy greens you know are the healthiest veggie as their leaves contain chlorophyll, the whole body purifier which neutralizes cancer causing free radicals, detoxes your body of toxins and heavy metals, and regulates blood sugar. Don't forget about sprouts and algae. eat all the sprouts you want and never gain weight.

Legumes (beans, lentils, and peas) are in a special category as they are considered in both the protein and veggie group. Legumes contain nutrients that most veggies have such as fiber, folate, and potassium. They are also low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium. It's recommended to eat some legumes every day with each meal you consume.

Garlic, onion, leeks and other veggies in the allium family are cancer fighters. They destroy cancer cells but leave other normal cells alone.

Seeds and nuts like avocado are some of the best healthy fats which are good for you. Nuts help you lose weight as long as you continue eating a handful or so a day. Consuming nuts has also been shown to reduce risk of stroke. Walnuts are one of the best nuts to eat. Remember there's also chia, hemp, sunflower, pumpkin, and sesame seeds.

Herbs and spices have the highest level of antioxidants. Think turmeric, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, cayenne,  oregano, parsley, horseradish, peppermint, rosemary, and thyme to name a few potent ones. Adding many of these to your foods helps you to lose weight by not adding fattening sweeteners. You get more taste and flavor.

Remember to drink filtered pure water with lemon slices, hibiscus and green tea as these are important for your health. For those of you who like coffee, just remember it's a diuretic which dries your skin. It's a also a stimulant which may cause anxiety and/or jitters for some of you.

A Holistic Nutritionist's Rules For Optimal Digestion

A Holistic Nutritionist's Rules For Optimal Digestion | zestful living | Scoop.it
About 70 percent of our immune system lies in the digestive tract, and healthy digestion also means a healthy metabolism and more stable weight. Here are a few tried-and-true tips to keep your digestion flowing and your body glowing:
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that about 70-80% of your gut is located in your immune system? Your immune system is the seat of your health. What you are consuming, digesting, absorbing, assimilating, and eliminating does indeed matter as to how your metabolism functions as well as your body, brain, and gut.

Scientists are discovering more everyday about how your micro biome (healthy bacteria that inhabit your gut) affect every aspect of who you are. Healthy bacteria thrive on prebiotic fiber found in raddichio, onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, Jerusalem artichokes, chicory and other foods mentioned in this article.

When you eat food, bacteria is sharing the table with you. Be aware and avoid sugar, processed fake food stuff, gluten, and also know that antibiotics, your meds if you take, OTC meds, chlorine and fluoride in water can cause major health problems for you. Many health issues you have are gut related disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto's, MS, autism, some skin issues too. This information comes from Dr David Perlmutter.

Health Tips:  Eat more organic high fiber plant based foods or total plant based food with lots of bitter greens. Your ancestors ate these wild bitter greens. Your body hasn't changed in millennia. Eat fermented foods which teem with good bacteria to recolonize your gut.

Definitely reduce your stress levels. Try meditation, deep breathing, yoga, tai chi, QiGong. Stress relates to your micro biome and hormone levels.Stress influences inflammation.

Get enough sleep. Sleep is critical for aging well. Your body needs sleep as it relates to your hormones. Use dark shades, turn screens off an hour before bedtime, drink chamomile tea, read a real book.

Make sure to take vitamin D3, magnesium, turmeric, get enough omega 3s. You might need to take some supplements. Alpha lipoid acid and NAC are really good as is getting enough CoQ10.

Here's a new one perhaps, but it works as this subscriber has been doing it for awhile now. Eat your fruit separately from your greens, veggies. Eat a few hours after you have drank your 2-4 cups of filtered water with lemon/lime if you prefer.

10 Cancer-Causing Foods You Should Never Put In Your Mouth Again

10 Cancer-Causing Foods You Should Never Put In Your Mouth Again | zestful living | Scoop.it
While no one goes around trying to consume things that will make them ill, the truth of the matter is, there are many unnatural products out there that can wreak havoc on our health. The American Institute for Cancer even states on their website that, “of the most common US cancers, about one third of the cases are […]
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that your body only recognizes real whole food? When you eat a product or substance that has synthetic, artificial, chemical,  and toxic ingredients in it, your body is unable to recognize it when it's broken down.

Real food is energy for your body, energy your body uses for its bodily functions. Real plant based food contains essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, amino acids, and fiber. Non fake food contains none of these but does contain harmful addicting substances that your body can't use for any of its functions. These substances cause inflammation which leads to chronic diseases, cancers, Alzheimer's, and a host of other health issues.

Ultra refined processed non food stuff usually comes in a box, bag, or container and on its label are long chemical words you can't pronounce. Sugar or a sugar derivative  like fructose, or an artificial sweetener, is usually listed. All the fiber has been stripped out and many times vitamins and minerals have been added. Many times extra sodium has been added as well. You may also see that GE i(genetically engineered) ingredients have been added. This isn't real food, folks.

Health tips: When in doubt, in your market, always choose food in its natural state. Choose raw fruit instead of sauces, pie fillings, even dried products. Try to buy your greens and veggies loose, not in a non recyclable plastic container. There's already too much plastic in our landfills and oceans. Buying loose also helps you to eat it up, not end up throwing out half the container.

If you can, buy in bulk. You'll save money, buy just what you need, and avoid food waste. If possible, buy dried beans, lentils, peas in place of canned. Only a few brand companies list "no BPA", but the  substitute for BPA is also considered carcinogenic.

A Doctor's Top 5 Foods For Better Sleep (Including Almond Butter!)

A Doctor's Top 5 Foods For Better Sleep (Including Almond Butter!) | zestful living | Scoop.it
Just as a triple-shot Frappuccino at 9 p.m. would be destructive for your sleep, there are also foods that can help support a good night's rest.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that what you consume, digest, absorb, assimilate, and eliminate affects every aspect of  who you are, including your sleep? Your brain does a nightly detox removing damaged cells when you're in deep sleep. If you never get to this deep sleep stage, this can affect how your brain functions.

Health tips:  Real whole plant based food nourishes and protects your brain and body. Fermented foods are probiotic and foods rich in prebiotic fiber which feed your microbiome are both necessary for your digestive tract.

Remember your body operates as a whole unit, not disparate parts. This design is similar to how our planet works. To have a healthy body, all systems must be balanced. To have a healthy eco system, all species:  plant, animal, human must co-exist. Lose one and the whole planet suffers.

22 Okra (Ladies' Finger) Benefits That Are Good For Your Health

22 Okra (Ladies' Finger) Benefits That Are Good For Your Health | zestful living | Scoop.it
Okra has a long list of benefits. Okra benefits include detoxification, sugar control, bone health etc. Read more on the fascinating Okra health benefits.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that plant based real whole food is the very best food for your health and well being? Every plant has nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes which your body requires to help it function optimally. Some plants have more, some less. When you consume more greens, veggies, and fruit daily, you are giving your body healing nutrients which are anti-inflammatory. Anti-inflammatory foods help to ward off and lower your risk of getting chronic diseases, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and help to keep your gut flora healthy.

Numerous studies have proved and others have shown that consumption of a complete plant based food plan can reverse heart disease and diabetes type 2. Eating more of these anti-inflammatory foods and much less or no inflammatory food (sugar/refined processed non food, animal based food, GMOs) helps you to lower your risk with all health problems. Remember the bacteria that inhabit your gut like high fiber anti-inflammatory foods. You have more microorganisms than you do human cells. when they’re healthy so are you. And when they’re sick, you are too.

Health Tips: Try and eat as much raw and living foods as you can every day. Eat organic sprouted foods, fermented foods, healing herbs and spices, dark green leafy veggies, cruciferous veggies (broccoli, kale, cabbage, cauliflower etc), blue green algae, chlorella, soaked legumes (beans, lentils, peas), raw nuts/seeds, healthy fats, some ancient grains if you have no known gluten issues (quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, millet, teff), and fruit.

Of course eat what works for your body. However, you will find when you begin eating more of the above foods, your body will feel much better. and when your body feels great, so will you. So consider adding one new food group each week. There are scads of delicious recipes online for you to try. If you just don’t like cooking, more and more companies are creating plant based food products. Just read the label. If sugar or artificial sweeteners are listed at the top of the label, it’s best to not buy because your gut flora doesn’t respond well to this sweet poison.

8 Reasons to Start Eating More Curcumin | Live in the Now | zestful living | Scoop.it

Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that you can get the same or better results from eating the root turmeric as you can from taking cur cumin supplements? Always opt for the whole food.

Curcumin is the anti-inflammatory compound contained in the root turmeric. Turmeric is a spice commonly used in Indian recipes like curry. This spice has specific healing benefits for your body.

Eating turmeric daily will help you to decrease inflammation as cur cumin acts as an antioxidant which neutralizes free radicals. It also helps your body's own antioxidant enzymes work more efficiently. And less inflammation means a reduction in chronic diseases, arthritis, cancer, and Alzheimer's as you age.

Turmeric helps to increase the hormone BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factor) which helps brain function, improves memory, and increases intelligence. With the increase in the hormone BDNF, there is less risk from brain diseases.

Turmeric lowers the risk of heart disease as consuming turmeric helps improve the function of the endothelium (the lining of the blood vessels in your body). And studies have shown that cur cumin has an effect like, but better than Prozac to treat depression.

Health tips: Add turmeric root or powder to your foods daily. With turmeric, to get all the benefits of its compound cur cumin, just add a few sprinkles of black pepper (piperine) with the powder. add a little coconut oil and you're ready.

You can make a turmeric latte, turmeric green smoothie, add turmeric to salads, mains. Some folks make a paste with turmeric to use as a face mask. Just be cautious as turmeric stains.

3 Reasons Eating With The Seasons Is Better For Your Body

There are wonderful benefits to aligning your eating with the seasons!
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that when you buy food in season, you are getting the freshest ingredients, the most nutrients, and food that aligns with your body’s own needs? Local food from your area has a low carbon footprint compared to food that is flown and trucked in. Food that is picked unripe like fruit and other plant food may sit in a truck for a week before getting to your market. In a week, the food is already devoid of any of its nutrients, even organic.

Yes, it’s unfortunate that there are places in the U.S. that are considered food deserts. Planting your own garden will certainly help. Start a community garden as other cities have done. Petition your Congress person, your Governor, your Mayor to find ways to bring in healthy organic markets to your town. Run for office. It is the right of every person to have healthy nutritious food.

Health tips:  Grow your own raw living foods as in sprouts. You can order your supplies online from Dr Mercola, other sprout companies. Sprouts are nature’s best foods that keep on giving. Cut them, but leave the roots in the soil and they keep producing. You can grow sunflower shoots, pea shoots, broccoli sprouts, radish sprouts. You can also buy locally from an organic seed store. Many communities now have these stores or buy your seeds from online organic seed companies.  You want organic seeds. Legumes (lentils, peas, beans), nuts/seeds, ancient seed grains (quinoa, buckwheat, millet) can all be sprouted.

Sprouts have 10-30 times the protein nutrients of mature plants. It’s the best bang for your buck.

12 Signs of Vitamin D Deficiency (and How to Get More)

12 Signs of Vitamin D Deficiency (and How to Get More) | zestful living | Scoop.it
Millions of Americans are Vitamin D deficient and they don't even know it. So if you notice any of these signs, get your levels checked.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that not taking enough vitamin D can cause health problems? Vitamin D influences about 3,000 genes out of around 30,000 in your body. And that’s one of the main reasons it affects many diseases such as heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, and others. This information comes from Dr. Mercola.

Vitamin D is really a hormone which you get from sun exposure, foods you consume, and supplementation. The term refers to either vitamin D2 or D3, but D3 (chemical name 25-hydroxy vitamin D) is real vitamin D—it's the same substance produced naturally through your skin by sun exposure.

Quite a number of well tested and confirmed studies have linked vitamin D deficiency to cancer. Researchers agree that increasing levels of vitamin D could prevent other chronic diseases that kill almost one million people in the world annually.

Other studies show that 60% of people with type 2 diabetes have vitamin D deficiency. Different studies show low levels in the elderly, children, and women. African Americans and other dark skinned people and people living in northern latitudes make less vitamin D.

Health Tips: The best way to get your vitamin D is through sun exposure. Years of misinformation from many health professionals and the media have led to most people staying out of the sun and slathering on sunscreens (the majority have mostly toxic ingredients). Go to the United States Naval Observatory site where there is a video which provides practical guidelines on how to use natural sun exposure to optimize your vitamin D benefits. You want to get tanned, not sunburned.

There are two types of rays. Watch the video. One type will give vitamin D (the UVB rays) and exposure to the other (UVA rays) will give you cancer. When the UVB rays are not present during the year in your area, take vitamin D supplementation. Between 10 am and 2 pm is an ideal time to be outside on a sunny day.

You need to take whatever dosage is required to obtain a therapeutic level of vitamin D in your blood. Your blood serum level is the important piece, not the dosage. Dr Mercola recommends this site www.grassrootshealth.net which has done the research and determined the average dose of oral vitamin D that most adults need to reach 40 ng/ml. (nanograms per millilmeter) The 40 ng/lm is still below the updated 50-70 ng/lm so you may need more than the number calculated (8,000 I.U.) Remember this number is for most adults, not everyone may fit in this category. Check with your healthcare professional.

GrassRootsHealth site will mail you a test kit if you agree to pay for the test and you don’t need to go to a blood drawing lab. It’s a finger prick.

Getting the correct test is the key. “There are TWO vitamin D tests currently being offered: 1,25(OH)D, and 25(OH)D. The correct test your doctor needs to order is 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D, which is the better marker of overall D status. This is the marker that is most strongly associated with overall health. Next, the "normal" 25-hydroxyvitamin D lab range is 20-56 ng/ml. This conventional range is really a sign of deficiency, and is too broad to be ideal. In fact, your vitamin D level should never be below 32 ng/ml, and any levels below 20 ng/ml are considered serious deficiency states”. This information comes from Dr Mercola.

Vitamin D3, not vitamin D2 for your oral supplementation. MyKind Organics has a very good vegan D3 liquid without animal based lanolin.

Supercharge the Healing Power of Garlic

Supercharge the Healing Power of Garlic | zestful living | Scoop.it

Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that the herb garlic is a holistic/natural antibiotic which has protective properties due to its phytonutrients (plant nutrients) which are anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antioxidant rich. Several plant nutrients have been researched for their ability to protect cells from radiation damage including garlic, turmeric, goji berries, mint leaves, holy basil, green tea, broccoli sprouts, and others.

Garlic has "health promoting compounds that are absorbed into your bloodstream after you swallow it and which are then exhaled pungently from your lungs in your breath",

Dr Michael Greger, "How Not to Die" goes on to say that "garlic can potentially be used as an adjunct treatment for critical cases of pneumonia as it may help clear bacteria on its way out of the lungs".

Garlic contains sulphur containing nutrients that help your immune, and cardiovascular systems, and joint health. Garlic is one of five veggies that completely stopped cancer growth- "breast tumor cells dead in their tracks". Dr Michael Greger, "How Not to Die".

Health Tips: The best plant based food to consume continue to be dark leafy greens, cruciferous veggies, and the allium family (onions, garlic, leeks). The last two groups are top cancer fighters.  "Garlic and onions have also been associated with significantly lower risk of PBH "- enlargement of the prostrate gland.

Garlic, cloves, and cinnamon followed by raw turmeric, pepper, and ginger are good herbs/spices that have been tested to help reduce gassiness after eating beans. Dr Michael Greger.

It's best to eat garlic raw if possible. Raw and living foods are rich in food based enzymes. Enzymes are protein molecules that initiate biochemical reactions in all livings things, plants, and animals as well.

The Herb That Has People In This Italian Village Living Past 100

The Herb That Has People In This Italian Village Living Past 100 | zestful living | Scoop.it
Acciaroli, a small fishing village south of Naples, has an unusual concentration of citizens over the age of 100, with very low rates of Alzheimer’s and heart disease. Their use of rosemary may be why.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that herbs and spices have the most antioxidants than any other food you consume? Rosemary like sage contains  antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. It is also antiseptic, and antispasmodic. In European folk remedies it was used both internally and externally for sickness including nervous disorders, upset stomach, headaches. baldness, arthritis, pain, strains, and bruises.

Today rosemary is know as the memory herb. It contains compounds that prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a brain chemical that allows the nerve cells responsible for memory and reasoning to communicate with each other. Rosemary also improves circulation to the brain.

Rosemary increases the activity of an enzyme that removes free radicals associated with chronic inflammation. Rosemary contains flavonoids which have been shown to inhibit the growth of pancreatic cancer.

Rosemary also helps to relax muscles, including muscles of the digestive tract and uterus. Rosemary relieves intestinal cramps and spasms. It also eases bloating and stops flatulence. There are bitter substances in rosemary which help to simulate the release of bile, which helps the digestion of dietary fat and lowering cholesterol levels.

Health Tips: In old Europe remedies, rosemary baths were used to prevent bacterial infection from complicating eczema. Rosemary baths stimulate blood circulation to the skin. Rosemary contains camphor which increases the blood supply to the skin. When you use rosemary in the bath, it helps to reduce pain in rheumatic muscles and joints. Rosemary baths also help to improve circulatory issues, as in low blood pressure, varicose veins, bruises, and sprains.

Using small amounts of fresh or dried rosemary in cooking poses no problems. It's best to always purchase organic herbs and spices. When using rosemary as an essential oil, be sure to work with a trained knowledgeable herbalist. Rosemary is a uterine stimulant and it should not be used during pregnancy. Continuous usage is best avoided by women with heavy menstrual flows.

10 Simple Ways to Eat at Least 10 Grams of Protein at Each Meal Without Meat

10 Simple Ways to Eat at Least 10 Grams of Protein at Each Meal Without Meat | zestful living | Scoop.it
Need a protein boost? Here are 10 simple examples of ways to add more protein to every single meal without meat!
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that most people consume too much protein? According to Dr Michael Greger, www.nutritionfacts.org , adults need 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight each day-

that’s about 50 grams for someone who weighs 150 pounds—which most people achieve easily.

Plant based real whole food supples enough protein for top vegan athletes and for the less active person, maybe like you. 400 pound gorillas eat mostly fruit, leaves, bark, stem, and shoots plus some nuts, seeds, and insects. If an animal of this size with lean muscle can thrive on a plant based regimen, then you as a human can too.

Protein is made up of different combinations of amino acids, and millions of variations exist within your body. Eight amino acids make up what's known as a complete protein. Plant foods contain simple proteins that are easy for your body to break down and use for its nutritional needs.

Are you  aware that the proteins found in animal based foods are very difficult for your body to break down?  Consider eating foods that offer the most nutrition as in plant foods. Consider growing your own sprouts. Easy and fun. 10 to 30 times more protein than mature plants.

Health Tips:  Eat nutrient dense real whole plant based foods, organic if budget allows. Organic real whole foods has been shown to have much lower or no pesticides. Buy seasonal and local. and consume same day or within a few days.

Brazil nuts are a rich source of protein and trace minerals. Other nuts (walnut, almond, cashews, pistachios, pecans) and seeds as in pumpkin, chia, hemp, sunflower, and sesame are very good sources of plant based protein. Legumes or pulses are high in plant protein as are leafy greens; like spinach. Ancient grains as in  quinoa, amaranth, and buckwheat are considered complete proteins.

Chlorella and spirulina are very rich sources of plant based protein.

Turmeric: What it is and Why You Should be Using It

Turmeric: What it is and Why You Should be Using It | zestful living | Scoop.it
Turmeric has been surging in popularity for good reason – learn how to incorporate this versatile and nourishing spice in your cooking!
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that turmeric, the potent anti-inflammatory Indian spice can be eaten raw or cooked? Raw turmeric may have greater anti-inflammatory effects, while cooked turmeric appears to offer better DNA protection. This information from Dr Michael Greger, "How Not to Die".

Anyway you slice it,  raw or cooked, eating  turmeric is one of the best things you can do for your health. You can also take curcumin supplements, as cucumin is an active ingredient in turmeric. However be aware that not all supplement companies have the same  high standards.

Supplement manufacturers operate on the reductionist idea that drug companies use that herbs have one main active ingredient that they can isolate and purify into a pill. But herbs have many different active ingredients. as they are a whole food.

Another caveat is the dose taken. With the herb, just an eighth of a teaspoon or a quarter of a teaspoon is just right. But with a supplement the levels might be boosted to more than what would be considered safe. Always buy from a integrity science based company where your questions will be answered by a health or science professional, not a sales rep.

Also be aware of contamination with toxic ingredients, such as arsenic, cadmium, and lead.

Health tips:  If you have certain health conditions such as gallstones and kidney stones, please check with your health provider/doctor before consuming turmeric.

Besides awesome taste, the best reason to switch is your health. Health Tips:  Whichever way you choose to go, eat more plant based real whole foods. Get a few neighbors together and have a plant based potluck once or twice a week. Prep and cook together, it's more fun this way. Plant a garden and get your kids involved. This is one of the coolest ways for kids to change their food /lifestyle habits.

And if you're wanting to lose fat, eating plant based with no gluten (bread, crackers, cookies) and very little if any refined processed non food is just about the best way to drop that fat/weight and feel fab. Anyone of you can do this, especially if you're totally motivated. Unfortunately many times, it takes a major health crises to bring on that total focus. Go for it, full out. The outcome is life changing.

How to Make Golden Milk

How to Make Golden Milk | zestful living | Scoop.it
By Maggie McCrackenHave you heard of golden milk? Brit + Co calls it the new green juice, but this delicious concoction is no trend—it's been around for ages. Made from a base of turmeric and fresh milk, golden milk is an anti-inflammatory dream that's commonly consumed in Okinawa, Japan. It
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know you can make delicious milks, smoothies, and puddings with turmeric, the anti-inflammatory, cancer protecting herb? Turmeric, with its healing compound cur cumin has been used for thousands of years by Ayurvedic practitioners.

Today there are over 5,000 published articles in medical literature extolling the many health benefits of cur cumin and more than 50 clinical studies have tested cur cumin against a variety of diseases with more studies on the way. Curcumin has ben shown to be effective for treating rheumatoid arthritis better than the leading drug.

It helps speed recovery after surgery and may also help prevent and treat lung and brain disease, a variety of cancers, including multiple myeloma, colon, and pancreatic cancer. cur cumin may be effective in treating osteoarthritis, lupus, and inflammatory bowel disease. This information comes from Dr Michael Greger, "How Not to Die"

Health Tips:  You can buy organic turmeric root or turmeric powder in your grocery store. Dr Greger recommends a quarter teaspoon a day to be on the safe side because this is a very potent herb. Within an hour of eating turmeric, cur cumin appears in your bloodstream, in small traces. Add a quarter teaspoon of  black pepper, and the level of cur cumin in your bloodstream jumps up by 2,000 percent.

A quarter of a teaspoon of dried turmeric is equal to a quarter inch of fresh turmeric root. This is truly the bang for your buck as a two inch long root costs about ten cents. Fresh turmeric has a more subtle flavor than dried.

For this golden milk recipe, you can use any nut milk and try using organic liquid Stevia, a few drops in place of honey, and some cinnamon. If you are using honey, make sure it's raw organic  and not processed junk food.

Where do you get your protein?

Where do you get your protein? | zestful living | Scoop.it
“Where do you get your protein?” It’s probably the No. 1 question vegetarians and vegans get about their diets. But why? In the United States today, protein deficiency is virtually nonexistent. In fact, most Americans are actually getting twice the protein their bodies really need.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that most people in the U.S. eat way too much protein, much more than your body needs? Protein deficiency is virtually non-existent, even though you wouldn't know this fact if you listen or read what mainstream media writes about nutrition.

Getting more protein isn't the health problem, rather the important question is, "where do you get your fiber". If you eat animal based food and very little to no produce, then you might have a serious health issue. Read the article.

Health tips:  Fiber as you know by now is absolutely necessary for regulating your body's processes. Because it's indigestible is why it works so well. Fiber isn't absorbed by your body. Instead it absorbs acids and impurities in your bloodstream and colon. It cleans your insides and stimulates the peristalsis wave like motion that moves food through your digestive system. Fiber is like getting your house cleaned from top to bottom.

Plant based real whole food is rich in fiber. Greens, veggies, fruit, nuts, seeds, legumes (beans, lentils, split peas, chickpeas), and ancient grains. A cancer preventative recommendation states that consuming legumes and whole grains with every meal is a really good idea. From Dr Michael Greger, "How Not to Die".

Eating or Avoiding These Foods Can Take Years Off Your Face

Eating or Avoiding These Foods Can Take Years Off Your Face | zestful living | Scoop.it
Skip the plastic surgery, nix the toxic chemical beauty treatments, and reclaim your youth by incorporating (or avoiding) these foods in your diet.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that what you consume, digest, absorb, assimilate, and eliminate does indeed affect your total health, from your head to your toes and even your skin?  Your food, exercise, sleep, stress, attitude, and lifestyle habits all play a major role in how you age, whether you're thriving or barely surviving.

When chronic inflammation strikes, your skin is usually the first place you'll notice changes. Maybe you have a rash, eczema, age spots, or wrinkles seem to suddenly appear.

This is your body's way of alerting you to health problems. If you do nothing or ignore these first alert warning signs, you'll begin experiencing  a dizzying array of symptoms from other organs in your body. Symptoms are just alerts that your body needs help with the underlying cause of your pain.

Health Tips:  Your body needs fiber to function optimally, whether it's for elimination or food for the microorganisms which inhabit your gut. Plant based real whole food is rich in essential fiber. When you eat highly refined processed food with the fiber stripped out by food manufacturers, your body is unable to do its many jobs which keep you alive. And without dietary fiber, your healthy bacteria become sick and then so do you.

And when you add consumption of sugar, high fructose corn syrup, now called fructose, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, additives, pesticides, chemicals, GMOs,  industrial pollutants, fluoride, alcohol, endocrine disruptors, and tap and/or bottled water to the mix; it's no wonder your poor body is suffering with a myriad of chronic diseases, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease.

Broccoli Reduces Your Risk of Four Major Diseases

Broccoli Reduces Your Risk of Four Major Diseases | zestful living | Scoop.it
The good news is about broccoli is that phenolic compounds are flavorless and stable, meaning it can be cooked without losing health-promoting qualities.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that the cruciferous family of veggies are one of the best foods you can consume which help you to be healthy? Dark leafy greens, alliums (garlic/onion/leeks), sprouts, chlorella, blue-green algae are also in that best category of foods to eat daily or weekly.

Are you aware that broccoli can be considered a dark leafy green veggie and according to Dr Michael Greger, www.nutritionfacts.org, may help lower the risk of mouth, throat, lung, breast, ovarian, endometrial, cervical, and prostrate cancers? And raw broccoli may help bladder cancer survival. No wonder broccoli is considered a powerhouse veggie.

New research shows even more nutritional benefits as broccoli may also help block absorption of toxins in your gut, boost detoxifying enzymes in the liver,  and play a role in gut immunity says Dr Greger.

Health Tips: Broccoli sprouts are the nutritional bang for your buck. You can grow them at home or buy them from healthy markets. Growing your own gives you more and it's fun to see the sprouts grow.

Broccoli is best eaten raw or steamed to retain the nutrients. Buy organic as often as possible to avoid pesticides. Use within a few days or the same day to retain nutrients.

7 Ways To Get Your Probiotics Without A Pill | Healing the Body

7 Ways To Get Your Probiotics Without A Pill | Healing the Body | zestful living | Scoop.it
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that probiotics are living microorganisms that support your health and wellbeing? They are different from prebiotics which are the food which helps your healthy bacteria to grow and flourish.

You can get probiotics from fermented plant based food, and supplements. Fermented or cultured food is an ancient  preservation method in which food is transformed by microorganisms that break down all the food's carbohydrates and protein, and aids in digestion due to healthy bacteria like lactobacilli.

Health Tips: Cultured fermented food is  only found in the cooler section of your market. Purchase organic. You can also make your own. Tempeh,  miso, and Kombucha  are three well known fermented products you can purchase. Miso can be soy based or made with chickpeas, or beans. Miso adds a spicy kick to your dishes. Add it after you've cooked your food because it isn't meant to be heated.

Many people DIY and you will find dozens of online recipes for sauerkraut, cultured veggies, kimchi, kombucha, water kefir. You can also make coconut yogurt and add the filling from a probiotic capsule. Use coconut "meat" and its liquid or you can also use coconut milk.with the probiotic capsule.

If you're not consuming very many or any fermented foods, then it's essential to take a probiotic capsule. Buy from a trusted brand/company with at least 24 Billion CFU. AloeDophilus from Univera is a good one.

9 Easy Steps To A Healthier, Happier Gut: A GI Doctor Shares

9 Easy Steps To A Healthier, Happier Gut: A GI Doctor Shares | zestful living | Scoop.it
The biggest factor in digestive health is what you eat. But don’t worry, you don’t have to completely adjust your diet to see better digestion. Here are nine easy steps I recommend for a healthier, happier gut.
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know that what you eat, digest, absorb, assimilate, and eliminate affects your mood, behavior, digestion, your gut flora (bacteria), immune system, brain i.e your whole body? Your body is composed of a unit, not separate parts.

Your body usually manifests symptoms; a rash, a burning sensation in your chest area, stomach cramps, constipation, dizziness, headaches, fatigue, brain fog, and many other health problems. Symptoms are your body’s way to alert you something is wrong and needs a correction. When you focus on just the symptom instead of the underlying cause, you basically are running in circles while your body is adding more symptoms, and the health problem gets worse. Bottom line: listen to your body and take immediate action.

Health tips: One way besides going to your healthcare professional is to take stock of what you’re consuming daily. You’ve learned that certain foods harm your body when taken in excess. Are you eating sugary, chemical laden, processed non fiber food? Are you drinking your calories with fruit juices, sodas, caffeinated chemically created beverages? Are you eating more animal based and very little plant based foods?

Sprouts, dark leafy greens, cruciferous veggies, alliums (garlic/onion family), blue-green algae, chlorella, herbs/spices, healthy fats (avocados, nuts, flaxseeds, chia/hemp, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, coconut, c.gold, olive oil), legumes/pulses (beans, lentils, split peas) raw carob, raw cacao, ancient seed grains (quinoa, amaranth, millet, buckwheat, teff) are good choices for you to consider adding or increasing in your meal plans. These are the fiber rich foods which your body and the bacteria which inhabit your gut crave. Remember when your bacteria is healthy, so are you and when its sick, you are too.

How about your lifestyle habits, are you burning the candle at both ends? Sleeping 7-9 hours a night isn’t really that difficult when your focus is concentrated because you’re consuming more complex carbs and plant based protein. Are you exercising in short bursts with high intensity, like Tabata and others? Walking is still one of the best movements you can do. Swimming, dancing, jogging, biking anyone? Also try qi gong, tai chi, yoga - helps with focus and more.

Co-op Veggies You’ve Never Seen Before And How To Cook Them | zestful living | Scoop.it
Your favorite co-op veggies explained!
Sandi Cornez's insight:

Did you know there are many different and unique kinds of veggies that your market may or may not carry that are healthy and good for you? It’s best to eat a widely varied assortment of produce every day or at least every week known as the rainbow.

Greens, veggies, and fruits contain anti-inflammatory plant nutrients providing your body with the enzymes, vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, and fiber it requires. Consuming more raw and living foods makes it easier for your body to digest, assimilate, and eliminate, giving your body more energy. This, in turn, helps your body to cleanse, heal, and repair itself so you feel more energized and healthy.

Why is fiber so important? Fiber is the indigestible part of plant foods. Greens, veggies, fruit, sprouts, nuts, and seeds contain the most fiber. fiber acts as a prebiotic catalyst, helping to populate beneficial bacteria in your gut which supports immune and G.I. function.

Fiber helps regulate blood sugar by allowing carbs in food to be slowly released into your bloodstream. Fiber helps to lower cholesterol. It also helps keep everything moving through your intestines, which prevents constipation.

Health Tips:  You’re going to love this one fact - including lots of filtered water and fiber rich raw and living foods into your meal plan makes it easy to feel full and satiated without eating more food.  A super simple way to lose fat. Make sure you’re moving throughout your day.

Prep on the weekend or the night before cut up veggies, fruits, add some nut/seeds to have on hand to munch on when you need to. Try adding a new green, veggie, fruit once a day or week to your meals. Variety is the spice of life.
