EdTech: It Isn't Optional, It's Essential [Infographic]

EdTech: It Isn't Optional, It's Essential [Infographic] | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it

"How important do you think it is for teachers to use educational technologies in the classroom? During this school year, how often do you or your students use [insert type of educational technology] in your classroom? What are the biggest challenges to integrating educational technologies in schools?

These were some of the questions asked in a national online survey of teachers and administrators, conducted for Common Sense Media's Graphite by Harris Interactive in May 2013. And here are some of the answers from the survey."

Do You Really Need An Instructional Design Degree?

Do You Really Need An Instructional Design Degree? | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it

"(...) In an ideal world, the person building the course is also involved in the design of it. But I’ve been in the industry long enough to know that’s often not the case. There are many course builders who have little say in the design of the course they build.

They’re hired to take content as it is designed by someone else and then build out the multimedia part of it. Having instructional design awareness is great and allows that person to offer constructive feedback, but if that’s not what the person is hired to do, then there’s a good chance the feedback goes nowhere.(..)"

How do we deal with unwilling corporate learners?

How do we deal with unwilling corporate learners? | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it

...But then I realised I was confusing two, albeit, related issues : willingness to learn and ability to learn for oneself. So I decided to try and plot these two issues on a chart.

Whereas those who are willing and keen to learn (in the top left-hand quadrant), just do it and pretty much sort themselves out, it is those in the bottom right-hand quadrant – the directed, unwilling learners who are not motivated or interested in learning, and expect to be taught. And this is clearly where most training efforts are placed. Hence the constant stream of advice about how to make learning effective, appealing, engaging – how to use the right colours or font sizes or images or whatever – in a desperate attempt to motivate the unwilling learner.

Six Principles of Effective e-Learning: What Works and Why by Ruth Clark : Learning Solutions Magazine

Six Principles of Effective e-Learning: What Works and Why by Ruth Clark : Learning Solutions Magazine | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it

"For the past ten years, Richard Mayer and his colleagues at the University of California at Santa Barbara have conducted a series of controlled experiments on how to best use audio, text, and graphics to optimize learning in multimedia. Six media element principles can be defined based on Mayer’s work. What follows is a summary of these principles along with supporting examples, psychological rationale, and research."

I like these principles (and I like that there is some research to establish why they work)

Phil Turner's curator insight, September 19, 2013 7:00 PM

Not enough references, and not direct references, which is what my "yet to be convinced" colleagues are looking for ... but the principles are logical and probably good starting points for a bit of further reading and discussion in development workshops for professional development of higher ed teachers

Alfredo Corell's curator insight, September 22, 2013 1:13 PM

Take any e-Lesson — show it to five people and ask them what they think. My bet is you will get five different opinions about the quality of the courseware. But, wait! What if the five reviewers are educational “experts” — specialists with advanced degrees in training and education? Now you might expect a greater consensus. Based on my experience over the past three years reviewing courses with experts, I predict a little more agreement; but it’s not likely to be anything close to a consensus.

How online learning is going to affect classroom design

How online learning is going to affect classroom design | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it

"Formal learning spaces have remained the same for centuries: a rectangular box filled with rows of desks facing the instructor and writing board….As a result, today’s students and teachers suffer because these outmoded spaces inadequately support the integration of the three key elements of a successful learning environment: pedagogy, technology and space.

Change begins with pedagogy. Teachers and teaching methods are diverse and evolving.  From one class to the next, sometimes during the same class period, classrooms need change. Thus, they should fluidly adapt to different teaching and learning preferences. Instructors should be supported to develop new teaching strategies that support these new needs."
