ProfeRed's curator insight, July 10, 2013 7:23 AM

"The study, which was conducted by development funding source in Latin America called Inter-American Development Bank, looked at 319 public schools in Peru. It found that although OLPC students were more likely to use computers than their non-OLPC counterparts, the two groups scored about the same on math and language assessments 15 months after laptops were deployed.

Furthermore, the laptop program did not affect attendance, time allocated to school activities or quality of instruction in class. Even though the laptops came loaded with 200 books, reading habits of recipients matched those of their control-group peers — 74% of whom have five or fewer books in their homes."...

David Donat's curator insight, July 24, 2013 12:26 PM

Schools That Have Gone Google (infografic) | Zentrum für multimediales Lehren und Lernen (LLZ) | Scoop.it
The sheer number of schools that have gone Google are simply incredible. More than 20 million students are currently using Google Apps.
The post The Staggering Number Of Schools That Have Gone Google appeared first on Edudemic.
LLZ Uni Halle's insight:

"(...)

Google is making inroads into education in a different manner than Apple. Apple is pushing iPads and other bits of hardware into the classroom. They then get schools into the Apple ecosystem of services, apps, and hardware upgrades.

Google’s approach is a bit different. They are pushing software into the classroom (via Google Apps, for example) and then cross-selling / up-selling other products. Basically, there’s a war being waged right now between the tech giants and your classroom is the battlefield. If this infographic doesn’t illustrate this point, I don’t know what does.(...)"

It is with those and other questions filling my summer days that I have decided that breaking the mould to routine is essential. That itself is nothing new - however, not all educational contexts offer the facility of day trips to students nor extra-curriculum activities. Bringing these into the classroom, is a way of changing routine and expectations. (...) "

I agree Andrew. Tools are tools and it's all about how you use them that counts.

Good question Thomas! I think it is an ongoing dance between learning good storytelling and then learning the tools for maximum impact.
Louise Robinson-Lay's curator insight, August 2, 2013 4:44 AM

recentlyrue recently I had to get students to use Powerpoint as the Internet connection was too slow to have them all work at once on other online presentation tools. After laying down some ground rules about effective use they amazed us with their creative responses. It is not the tool. It is how you use it. And how teachers plan for it!
